BTW, vegetarian "baked" beans (or even vegetarian refried beans) using
EVOO or other oils rather than bacon fat is nothing new. Heck, you can
buy any number of brands of "vegetarian" baked or refried beans in a
can. They've been available for years. Oh, and he added some broccoli
with butter. Doesn't make it sound better.

If this is what he thinks it means to cook vegetarian, he really needs
to learn more about it.

I guess it depends on the beans, we like refried black beans a lot,
very good with rice, or corn tortillas, hold the spuds... of course we
like them with fried pork chops... after frying the chops dump a
couple cans of black beans in the pan with liquid, heat and mash to
desired consistancy... seasoned with Penzys adobo. In fact fried pork
chops will be dinner tonight, with steamed brocolli crowns, and baked
potatoes, actually nuked potatoes... no beans tonight.

My daughter made some vegetable soup. I saw that she used a bag of beans that was in the fridge. I don't think she's cooked beans before so I told her that she'd have to cook it for about an hour to an hour and a half. She cooked it perfectly. The kids are going to change the way Hawaii cooks. It tastes like a mainland soup rather than a Hawaii soup. Her soup has a herbal essence in its taste - something that our soups lack. It does take some getting used to.

Sounds good.
To fix up canned pork n' beans here, I like to add
some onion and green pepper, a bit of mustard powder,
and some brown sugar.

I like spam too occasionally but I've still never fried it.
I'll make sandwiches from it right out of the can.

My daughter made some musubi the other day. I'm happy to say that she did it the traditional way - by putting a gob of burning hot rice in your hands and forming it.

The difference between making sushi and musubi is that sushi is made at room temperature and musubi is made with really hot rice. There is some pain involved. Making a perfect musubi is gracefully audacious work.

These days, most people use a plastic mold but the real old fashioned way is to make it by hand. It's pretty easy to tell if a musubi was made by mold or by hand. If it's made by hand, it's also easy to tell if it was made by an amateur or an experienced cook. A perfectly shaped onigiri is a most beautiful thing.

I would have added some mustard but I couldn't find the powder or bottle. My guess is that yours would taste quite similar to mine. I think that a little liquid smoke is a pretty good idea. I'll try a cold Spam sandwich the next time I get some soft white bread.

A lot of uncool people without kids can barely hide their resentment of people that talk about theirs. These people have been unlucky, or never wanted kids, or were afraid of making a commitment that required the sacrifice of a good part of their prime years. I sure hope these people used that extra time wisely in getting what they had hoped to achieve but when I hear people whining about other people with kids, it's a pretty good sign they just pissed away all their time and now all they got is resentment and envy. That's the breaks.

A lot of cool people don't like hanging out with people who talk only
about their kids. My wife had a life long best friend who we spent a
lot of time with. The husband had a good job and was into wine in a big
way. He had a wide range of interests to talk about. The wife was a
house wife.... sorry.... she did not work outside of the house. She was
a very nice person and a wonderful, generous hostess. .... but... all
she talked about was her kids. Back to the husband's interest in
wine... our visits usually involved considerable consumption of nice
wines. The more wine she had the more her conversation concentrated on
her daughters.

a different direction but similar, I do have a question.

Why is it some guys who have served in the military and have been out of the
service for 25+ years, ONLY want to talk about their time in whatever
branch they served in??? I don't care if their children are brain surgeons
or astronauts, A.L.L. they want to talk about and rehash is their military
service.

I've known two men like this. No matter what you are talking about they
will steer the conversation to their service time.

Maybe to impress you. The men I know who served in the wartime military
never steer their conversation that way around me, and I know quite a few.
I can listen quietly when two are recounting their experiences to each
other from afar. I have no right to join the conversation.
Well...one friend who served on a swift boat told me of a time he fell
overboard in the Tonkin Gulf and treaded water for forty five minutes until
the boat came back. I have another friend that served on one and has never
told me squat.
