AARGH...

These local nooze stations use college interns and young millenial kids for their staff, I see this all
the time... they are lazy and ignorant, thus the groan - inducing typos...

He spends shitloads of money on unnecessary memory. He openes all
those tabs automatically when his browser starts up so they'll be
"ready" if when he needs them but only uses maybe 10 of them a week.
Crazy, eh?

I probably look like a pauper in comparison. My PC that I'm using right

RAM used to be $50/MB. This limited most computers to 1 to 4 MB of RAM. Had prices stayed at that level, computers would have been a lot different. The world would have been a lot different. Dial-up might still be used in most homes. Film cameras would still be around. The world would probably be stuck in the late 1990s. That's would be something!

My computer has 12 memory slots. I bought it with 2GB sticks in
all 12 slots, so 24GB. My plan was to buy six 8GB, to have a total
of 60. I accidentally ordered twice, so I replaced all 12. The
memory didn't cost "shitloads." It's buffered server RAM, and at
the time, there was a lot of it for sale, so prices were very low.

That's how I ended up with 96GB. I think it cost me about $120,
as opposed to the $60 I had intended to spend. Also, I don't use
"maybe 10 of them a week." In the past couple of weeks I've
opened and closed easily well over a hundred tabs.

I don't know if it makes a difference that the 24GB's divided over 12
crazy 2GB slots, but normally 24 GB is more than you need.

I remember that time well. Mid to late 1990's. My first PC came with 4MB.
I wanted to upgrade that but not at that price.
Finally the price fell and I bought an 8MB ram chip for the cheap price
of $125. lol

It's not that special. Budget PCs are sold with 8GB. 16GB is only one
step up from that.

I built mine in 2015, and installed 32 bit Windows 7 as I had a few
legacy 16 bit programs that I wanted to run. That means it can only use
up to 4GB of RAM, so no point in installing more. In retrospect, it
wasn't worth it, I should have gone 64 bit. It still works OK as is,
for my light usage, so I haven't done anything about it.

Sorry, but to me 205 open tabs is just silly. How can that be faster
to locate the right tab with that many open?

I have 2 instances of Firefox running with 29 tabs open (although 6
were just for youtube downloads, closed now).

One tab open in Brave

10 in Opera...

And that's it.

No, I just hadn't bothered to close tabs for however many days.
Plus I probably had several other programs open, like photo
editing, word processing, etc. I was running Linux at the time,
and the performance was lagging. Now that I'm back to Win7,
I could probably use every bit of memory w/o it slowing down.

The case itself is 20+ years old. It was a good original investment.
I didn't expect it to last through 23 years worth of new hardware.
I didnt spend much time figuring out the brackets for the SSD's so
they just hang out of the way of the fans. Everything else inside
has been replaced many times over. It's seen at least 5
motherboards and 20 hard disks. Not to mention all the bestiality

My mistake there. I was thinking TB not GB. Even my 22 year old Win98
has 8GB hard drive.

Next was my Toshiba laptop that had 32GB.

My current laptop has 400 something GB. Can't even find that info right
now since Win Explorer is different.

Oh wait...I still have the box and it's tells some details.

So here's what I'm I using now (since a few months ago) for anyone
interested:
- HP laptop with a 15.6 screen.
- Windows10
- Cheap Intel Celeron processor
- Wifi and Bluetooth
- 500GB hard drive
- 4GB Ram
- DVD-Writer
- Webcam

It has 3 USB ports and I like that feature.

I added a good usb keyboard and a usb mouse. Much better than the
touchpad nonsense.

The cost was less than $300. Nothing to brag about but a major upgrade
to me and more than enough than I'll ever need.

I couldn't work with 4GB of RAM. I have a few programs open for work.
But I constantly take mini breaks when the work bores me, which is all
the time. So I also need programs or browser windows open for that.
8GB was too slow so I went to 16.

For fun, in 2015, I took a circa 1994 Gateway 2000 case and hacked
modern ATX hardware into it. It took some cutting and drilling, and the
power button was fun to figure out. I've done nothing with the hardware
since. I'm glad that I sprung for an SSD, it still boots up blazing fast.

It also took some work to find a modern motherboard that supports an
Intel i5 processor, that also has native 3.5" floppy support, but I
managed. The internal floppy drive is the only piece of original 1994
hardware still working and installed.

Is that Linux, or something? The first link that you posted looked like
Windows 7.

The last link was a shot of just a Firefox browser window. You can tell,
because it says Firefox at the top.

Firefox is available for both Windows and Linux.

I see that, but look below the browser window, the task bark looks like
Linux (I think). Clearly not Windows.

Could be. I haven't seen Linux with a task bar. OTOH, I mainly use the
GNOME desktop.
