Strawberries , that is . With today's haul we have enough for a batch
of jam ... half pints are in the dishwasher , berries are on the counter
ready to cap-n-smash .

They are in season here now too. Did you grow them or did you go
to a pick-your-own farm field? Back when I was married, we did
that each spring. Sadly all those fields are neighborhoods full
of houses now and the left over farm areas are farther
south...too far to bother with.

I took a pic of my daughter standing in the field one day when
she was only about 3 years old. 1982 or so. It also includes her
mom right *behind* her bending over picking and showing a nice
butt shot. I took the pic of daughter but bonus was wife's nice
butt. lol Didn't even realize that until the pics were
developed. Before digital cameras got popular or even invented.

Sweet corn (locally known as Silver Queen) is the next local crop
about to flourish. I love that corn and buy lots each year. I
freeze enough to last up until Thanksgiving. I cut them off the
cob and freeze one bag per ear of corn. No blanching necessary.

These are home grown - "organically" if you will , I use no
pesticides or herbicides because of the bees . They're jam now , and it
tastes fantastic . It looks like we'll have enough every 4-5 days for
another batch ... and for sure I'll be freezing some for later . My corn
is just barely a couple of inches tall , won't see a harvest - if I can
keep the 'coons out of it - until maybe August or late July . Beans
(blue lake bush) are starting to sprout too , I'm looking for a banner
year for most everything I'm planting .

You backwoods hillbillies just kinda make up your own language as
you go along.

Doesn't "smash-n-cap" make more sense?

Wait, come to think of it.... did notwhatshisface just post in
normal written English with all the letters (other than his cutesy
play on "Bowel Movement", which he did capitalized properly)?

First Sheldon gets 80% "better" (only 20% as ignorant and obnoxious
as before), and now notbob 95% better overnight? Are they testing
new chemtrail formulations in remote areas before rolling them out
to suburbia and urbanites?

Could be difficult to take off the cap (hull, calyx) if the berry is
already smashed.

Cindy is correct. First the cap is removed then either sliced or mashed.

I suppose so . The processing end of it is the wife's , I'm in charge
of production . <grin> I also do post-processing sampling to be sure the
quality is up there . <bigger grin> And it always is <burp> .

Huh... there's no strawberry picking in Noo Yawk til like mid June...
and hardly worth the sunburn and bug bites... skeeters love ankles.
I've planted my own but even netted birds are the best pickers.

LOL He thought Terry was talking about putting the caps on the jars.
Heck, I don't make jam or jelly but even I knew what he meant. :)

There are lots of pick your own places around here. One around the
corner from me raspberries and strawberries. The savings make it worth
picking them myself. I can scoot over there and in 10-15 minutes I can
pick enough for a batch of jam and save quite a bit on the berries.

I didn't know he was using "cap," as removing the leafy top of the berry. We always said we
would "stem," the berries. I have a couple antique berry stemmers (look like a very small
metal pincher to use between thumb and forefinger). These are metal, but I have seen plastic.
I find there is too much waste using a knife to slice off the leafy tops, unless using the point of
the knife to dig out where the leaves are "stuck," in the berry.

no, if you do that you'll break of pieces of
the leaves and then you have to get them out
of the berries.

different types of berries have different types of
cap and leave arrangements. some are much harder than
others.

having done many hundred gallons of strawberry
cleaning in my life so far i'd say that a very tiny
mellon ball type scoop works the best as you don't
cut bits of leaves off that way and it wasted very
little of the berry itself. my 2nd best prep tool
is a small paring knife which can slip in under the
leaves easily enough.

either way i still end up with the once in a while
tiny bit of sliced leaf that i have to pick out but
i usually see them when i'm stirring the jam anyways.

i don't make cooked strawberry jam any more - not
after doing freezer jam instead. it is so nice to
not have to deal with a hot stove in the middle of
summer.

the only thing i have to heat up is the lids for
the jars.

i hope i have a decent crop this year. i think the
plants are just starting to flower.

OK, so cap, smash, and cap. or possible, hillbilly doesn't do the
last cap.
