"In 1961, a dispute between Brazilian and French fisherman escalated
into an international incident, almost sparking a shooting war between
the two nations. The dispute was over French fishing trawlers
catching spiny lobsters along the continental shelf of Brazil. It has
become knows as the Lobster War...
When French fisherman began to work the continental shelf, 100 miles
off the coast of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, Brazilian
fishermen called on the assistance of the Brazilian Navy, which
dispatched two corvettes to the area to force the French ships
back into deeper water and allow Brazilian ships to work the
area. The French responded by deploying the destroyer "Tartu"
to the area. As the crisis deepened, the Brazilian Navy responded
with the deployment of a cruiser and aircraft carrier...
With both sides considering the commencement of a shooting
war over lobsters, cooler heads eventually prevailed and the
matter was referred to an international court for arbitration. The
case hinged on if lobsters were bottom-dwelling creatures and
belonged to the shelf and were therefore Brazilian or if they
swam like fish and were then able to fished by the French
fishermen...
In the end, the matter was resolved by the Brazilians claiming
their territorial water extended 200 miles off their coast, absorbing
the continental shelf and its fish AND crustaceans. The final part
of the resolution of the dispute was that 26 French fishing boats
were allowed to work the continental shelf for a period of five
years in exchange for a percentage of any profit made working
the area..."
