I know many here are now working towards their degree as RFC
Pshchologists so here is an experiment by Dr. Emoto using brown rice.
See, nice food tie in.

I guess no one wants to be the third bowl but will accept second.

You might think we're dinosaurs but you're the one that's extinct on Usenet. Usenet used to be populated with folks like you until it was taken over by folks like me. God bless the eternal Septembers! You even have a ".org" domain extension address. What was once normal is now a curiosity. :)

I'm over 60 and I work 40 hours a week. A 40-hour week has always been sufficient.

Nice try. Usenet used to be filled with college students because they had
access through their universities, and the general public couldn't readily access
it.

i just started reading usenet again after a decade lapse and now think
the same way. after google bought dejanews it didn't lake long for
nym shifting miscreants to fill up numerous groups i was reading with
mindless drivel. groups that were full of people from when usenet access
was a fringe benefit offered by most isp's dating back to the early 90's
who enjoyed talking about the subjects at hand. the easiest way to clean
up the nonsense was bit bucket googlegroups and whitelist on content. the
groups then looked a lot like, say, comp.os.linux.advocacy does now, full
of utterly useless nonsense and nearly nothing on the topic.

however, today, much of the traffic on usenet is posted from google
groups. there'd be nothing to read if it was kill filed.

No way am I convinced of that, because when I first started USENET back in 1995 (under a different name), there were way more non edu names than there were.

Face it, Cindy. Most people like forums with mostly pictures (moving or not), colors and sounds. That's why the young people are traditionally not here.

1995 is like yesterday in Usenet time (rather than a minute ago). Try 1980.

it's actually not any different than it was when i started reading usnet
in the mid 90's. the banter you speak of has always been a part of every
lively newsgroup i've read. it (usenet as a whole and individual
newsgroups) is a community of people with a common interest. in every
community there are going to be disagreements which eventually lead to
butthurt and revenge. it's merely part of the human condition.

It's very interesting indeed. An RFC poster has pointed out this
observation to me, at a group level (via e-mail). John is the rice in
this scenario. He responds much better to positive attention than
negative. However, he takes negative attention if that's all he can
get. He very well might end up like the third jar of rice if ignored.

You started Usenet in the AOL era, when all ISP's allowed access.
Usenet was primarily well educated people, University students, etc
before 1993.

September was never a place to look forward to in the Usenet years of
yore. That's when all of the freshmen were given access, and the place
got rowdy. Afterward, the tide settled down, and those that stuck
around settled in.

When AOL and other ISP's started allowing access in 1993 to the general
public, that was when the "Eternal September" started. Usenet's slow
and steady decline started then.

Yes, this info was from the top of my head. Look it up for further
reading, research the "Eternal September". No, not the Usenet provider
the I and others use, but the phenomenon that it was named after.

I'm full of useless information that I memorize like a sponge, but don't
ask me to remind you of of something tomorrow -- I'll never remember. :)

That's what happens when you try to use a 90's software in 2021. Back in those days, I used a dial-up connection and magnetic media. Those were the bad old days. Every web browser can resize type and word wrap. Your software is incapable of doing even that. Pathetic.

No doubt, but is is the personas the present that get them filtered, and
no matter how many times they change names their idiocy betrays them. It
is hard to imagine what sort of idiotic mental process inspires someone

Yes, in the past, it has been quite punishing. I do have the line
breaks with Thunderbird, BUT when replying, it is very difficult, as it
goes in one massive line. I usually just reply to your posts like that
as a block, with minimal snipping, or just snipping entire paragraphs.

I don't either, unless I'm replying, then GG show up in very long lines
with no breaks (making it hard to snip, etc). Does your version of
Thunderbird have line breaks for GG posters when replying in quoted text
also?

My software does re-size and word wrap with line breaks. It does not do
that, however, with quoted GG messages when replying (such as your
current message that goes WAY off screen as I'm typing my reply); that's
the breaks. ;)

Actually, there are a number of parameters to use for filtering the twits.

One might expect that the idiots who end up in the Bozobin should not
have a problem with being filtered. It turns out to be the complete
opposite with some of them, The really special ones seem to get really
upset about being ignored and go to great lengths to get around the filters.

Yes, I do see those, but otherwise, GG responses are one HUGE line.
Here, I've photographed a screen shot for you or anyone else to see.

https://postimg.cc/2qSwXCpm

See how huge the bottom scroll bar is? The long GG posts that show up
as a paragraph in the newsreader go on and on several pages wide when
"replying", making it very difficult to snip and quote sections. This
one one of Greg's old posts before he started manually word-wrapping.

Yes, I get that too, but I can make the lines fit within the screen.
They're still terribly long, though. A bigger problem is that when I
quote those lines in my reply, it becomes a big mess that I have to
fix manually. I skip GG posts more often, depending on the author.

I actually do use SeaMonkey as my browser, but not for Usenet or e-mail

Only a Neanderthal would believe that forcing a line break aka "carriage return" is a solution to anything. I learned over 30 years ago to never use the return/enter key to end a line (except to end a paragraph, of course) because that messes up the page formatting that computers use to make pretty lines of texts and paragraphs. People using archaic software are just going to have to suck it up. Either that or move into the 21st century, computer-wise. Catering to folks that choose to live in the past is not a good policy.

That was my concern for abandoning Windows 7, which is why I'm still
using it. If I were to change or upgrade, it won't be Windows. I'm not
sure how a newsreader would work with Linux, but that's probably the
route I'd go. I couldn't type on a tablet/touch screen. One of the
features of the newsreader that I like is that all of my e-mail accounts
are in the same place; same program, and I can e-mail you this message
or post it with a minor modification.

That looks good! It's breakfast time here, and I'm certainly getting
hungry now.

WowMom. That's very old. The youngest poster here uses the oldest version.

I'm probably 2nd oldest version - v 45.0

I looked at Jill's and Ed's headers and
Jill uses v 78.14.0
Ed, with Win10 uses v 91.1.1

That's a LOT of upgrading for both of us.
Probably like you though, if it ain't broke, why fix it?

I tried upgrading a year or so ago when current version was about 60. It
wouldn't let me go from one to the other. Required a series of updates
then it quit working for me so I went back to v45.

Rather than update T-Bird on this old Win7 computer, I'll just get the
Win10 up and working then download the latest version on that.
