This is due to two things. Lack of available meat. I don't want pork or fake
meats. I do have a pound of ground beef to use up and a raw beef roast in
the freezer.

I do have some frozen and refrigerated prepared foods. I have frozen and
canned vegetables. Some other canned food. Plenty of pasta, rice and dried
beans. So... I shall be living off of those things for the time being.
Might make a tuna or chicken casserole or a grilled cheese. That will be
pretty much the extent of my cooking.

But just think, this bogus thread will probably produce at least 100

If you buy a rifle for your gardener, he can go hunting for meat.
Washington state has lots of wild game. Also get him a rod and
reel. Fish is nice once in a while.

I don't know if B&I circus is still there, but they used to have
lots of good sporting equipment. They had a gorilla too, but I
think he died some years ago.

I had to wonder about a news story I read yesterday. Apparently the
protesters are going to court to have restrictions placed on the so
called federal agents. It just seems a little ironic to have people
claiming to control an autonomous zone wanting the authorities to step
in. That ranks up there with a video iI saw on FB when a cop is telling
views about a Defund the Police organization requesting a police
presence at their protest to protect them.

I've been trying to be like that, plus the other fashionable superfoods they talk about elsewhere. It's still too tempting to ALWAYS avoid the junk. So, I just have to run around the track a couple of times more, I guess. If I was in downtown, Vancouver, Seattle or Portland like you, I'm sure the authorities wouldn't chase me down while running laps around the nearby high school track. Weird. Try picturing that.

This week Tops Market has a good sale on all beef cuts, including nice
steaks; BOGO!
I bought two large Top Round Steaks and one large Boneless Chuck...
cut em into strips and sent em through my grinder this morning and
made up eight 12 oz burgers for the freezer... two are in the fridge
for dinner tonight on Kaiser rolls. Go to Topsmarket.com and check it
out.
I've noticed no shortage on meats or anything else. Just like any
other time not every cut is available or on sale. The livestock
farmers up here are all having good sales on meats; beef/pork... thing
is you need to buy a quarter or a half, too much for us. Chickens went
on sale last week. Turkeys will be available shortly. Meats from the
livestock farmers are all free range grass fed.

I can't say I've ever seen "nice" steaks as a BOGO item.

Good for you, Sheldon! Going to the Tops website won't benefit anyone
here. Tops markets are only located in New York, Vermont and Northern
Pennsylvania. It's a regional chain.

> I've noticed no shortage on meats or anything else.
(snippage about local farms in upstate NY)

I haven't noticed any shortages of meats or produce, either. When the
pandemic first became apparent in March there was the hoarding toilet
paper thing... but since you have 300 twelve-packs in your basement of
course you wouldn't have noticed. ;)

I made a stock-up trip for the freezer last week. I bought packages of
fresh bratwurst and mild Italian sausage (in casings) and a couple of
nice chuck eye steaks. The bratwurst and the Italian sausage were on
sale, $1.66 off from $4.99. The chuck eye steaks, OTOH, were $10.29/lb!
Hmmmm, last time I bought them I think they were $6.99/lb.

There were plenty of ribeyes, NY strip, porterhouse. I noticed a lot of
sirloin tip steaks. Here's a "tip" about sirloin tip: they look pretty
but it's a tough as nails cut of beef. The label on the tip steaks
specifies "marinate". Woe to those who don't bother! I did have to dig
around in the meat case to find chuck eye steaks. They were hidden
under the sirloin tip steaks.

Chuck eye steaks aren't something most of the people I know have ever
heard of. The didn't start showing up at Publix until last year. I
remembered them as being delicious from well before I moved to SC. Knew
them to be tender, just as juicy and tasty as a ribeye but not nearly as
expensive. A well kept secret... ;) Not anymore.

No. I think it's because more people are going to this particular store to
get the best prices, and we're still only supposed to go out for necessities
so when people shop, they buy more than normal.

Oops sorry. My stockpile. I have tons of beans, rice and pasta now, bought
with the belief that the grocery stores might close. We were instructed to
lay in a stock of food to get us by for two months. Got to eat that now.

Tonight I used up the ricotta cheese in a pasta dish. The end result had the
taste of lasagna but it was too rich for me and I could only eat a few
bites.

I also screwed up. Grabbed what I thought was a small can of tomato sauce
and didn't realize the mistake until I opened it. It was carrots. Forgot
that I found two little cans of carrots somewhere and bought them. So I ate
them because the can was opened. For me, canned carrots are okay in a soup

I've been going to the Walmart Neighborhood Market as their prices are lower
overall. Granted, I won't buy much of their meat even when in stock because
I won't buy stuff with water or salt water or whatever, added.

But... I was going to pick up a pot roast at QFC. Looked to be enough for
4-6 servings. Wasn't wearing my glasses so couldn't read the weight. They
wanted $50 for it! And the price of chicken is much higher.

Also in almost every store I go to, about 1/3 of the meat counter is fake
meat. I have not noticed this at Walmart. Come to think of it, I haven't
noticed any fake meat in the meat dept. They might have it elsewhere though.

My friend dined out at a fancy restaurant the other day. They had a limited
menu as most places that are open here now do. She ordered the meatballs. It
wasn't pasta and meatballs. Just meatballs drizzled with sauce. Weird. She
loved them and asked what kind of meat they were made of. It was fake meat.
How can they call them meatballs? I've seen recipes for "Wheatballs" made of
seitan or similar. Hmmm...

Good point, Cindy. Sounds like she confuses "shopping" with "cooking".
Don't forget, she has often bought food online. Canned wild rice comes

house to buy more food? Got to use the provisions on hand? What
happens when they're depleted?

If she doesn't want meat, why is a meat shortage a problem? What is
this "fake meat" she keeps talking about? Are things really that bad in

If she is, she's full of shit. I just checked her local government's
web site. She can shop for food.

I note her friend dined out in a fancy restaurant. That doesn't sound
like any kind of hunkering down.

God knows. Rice, beans, pasta, and canned vegetables ought to last
for a couple of years.

Perhaps people are buying meat and leaving the Impossible Burgers in
the case. If she doesn't get there early, I can see why she might
have trouble finding what she wants.

I've been shopping at about 6 am before I got to work. The only trouble
I have is that I get there before they're finished stocking, so some
things I want just aren't out on the floor yet. Meat is in decent
supply, although I was unsurprised to notice prices are going up.

Sounds like a self-inflicted problem to me.

I am slowly going blind. Yes. But I will admit that I didn't look at the
can. Only the top. It had a pull tab and I thought that was odd as I'd never
seen tomato sauce with a pull tab. Thing is, I keep my cupboard very well
organized but somehow this can got mixed in with the tomato sauce. Maybe it
fell and J just randomly stuck it back. He told me he was going to teach me

newest stuff. I do think I've seen the old kind of soy and seitan fake meats
in the produce section, but I can't say for sure. I know there was a vegan
section. Angela insisted on having that crap when she went vegetarian. I
begrugingly bought it for her and she hated it.

This is one brand I bought:

https://fieldroast.com/?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Nonbrand%20%7C%20General%20%7C%20Exact&utm_term=meat%20substitute&utm_content=General%3A%20Field%20Roast

This is the QFC ad. If you go to the 4th page, bottom right, you can see the
Beyond Burgers and Beyond Meat, full line on sale:

https://www.qfc.com/weeklyad

Seemingly all of the restaurants and stores are pushing this stuff here.
Everyone I know that has tried it has said it was good. I won't try it. And
I'm not sure why the big push for this stuff. I often see it marked down
because it didn't sell. Angela tried a marked down package of the burgers.
She said the first one was good but then after she finished it, she said she
was going to throw out the rest because the texture was too soft.

Yes, there is a ground beef shortage here and both Burger King and McDonalds
(at least some locations) have been out of burger patties at times.

But... Fake meat is nothing new. I remember my dad bringing home a large
milk carton type package of ham flavored TVP when his hours got cut at work.
We had to eat that stuff for two weeks. To this day I have no clue why he
would buy such a thing as there are healthier sources of cheap protein. I
can't stand TVP or anything that contains it. It's so rubbery and chewy

But I have eaten fake burgers in the past. One was Bocca burgers. That was
during the big soy protein push in the mid 89's and early 2000's. I ate
roasted soy beans, Tiger Milk bars and Boca burgers. They do taste very
good. I bought the "All American" kind. Everyone who tried them asked for
another and asked me what kind of nmeat they were. I could get them for next
to nothing at the military commissary. And when I lived on Cape Cod, I
bought some kind of frozen, black bean burgers that I've seen nowhere else.
Good but very expensive.

Once I realized how bad soy is (unless it's fermented), I laid off of the
soy products. But I did buy Sunshine burgers at the health food store. I
liked the Southwestern and Angela liked the BBQ kind. They are black bean
based and again, I could get them there for next to nothing. I mainly went
there when the dance studio was next door. They had a limited selection of
food but there was very little markup so I did as much grocery shopping
there as I could. With the burgers, it was the convenience factor. Others
got pizza or teriyaki to take home. I got the patties. Much cheaper. Just
heat for a minute or two in the microwave, then add some raw veggies or a
salad and there's dinner!

If you look in the frozen food section, there are tons of fake meats that
I've never tried and am not likely to. Quorn and Gardein are popular brands.
I'd rather open a can of beans.

Maybe the appeal of these newer fake meats is that they are made to appear
like raw meat. And they must be cooked before eating. I don't know.

That's because you live in your own little world. We have had this
discussion before and many people have mentioned the new fake meats.

The canned wild rice was fine. I bought that when I had a rice intolerance.
I could add that to chicken brother when I wasn't feeling well and didn't
want to wait for wild rice to cook. If I could buy that in a brick and
mortar store, I would. None here seem to sell it. Actually, wild rice isn't
very popular here at all.

We are still under stay at home orders. We are only supposed to go to the
grocery store once every two weeks. Most people do violate that because some
perishables just don't keep that long.

I am doing as much of my shopping online as I can so I don't have to leave
the house. I am finding the best prices to be at Walmart, Target (sometimes
through Google shopping), Boxed and now Dollar General. Dollar General
stopped selling online for a time. Sometimes I use Amazon. I love the
Crafterd Gourmet Almonds. Pin Himalayan Salt by Blue Diamond. Most places
sell them for $5.99 or moe for a 5 oz. package. No way! I have to keep
switching where I buy the. First it was Walgreens, then Amazon Fresh, now
Rite Aid. I do buy a lot because all have a minimum order requirement.

I have time to search for the best prices online because I'm supposed to
stay home. At least it gives me something to do. I would help J with the
gardening but he won'ty let. And since I am stuck at home with no end in
sight, I don't feel the desire to write.

I do need to eat meat about twice a week due to anemia. But I also have
gastroparesis so that limits the types of meat I can eat to pretty much
ground beef, chicken or turkey. No, I don't eat ground chicken or turkey.
Ick. I don't really like meat. I just need to eat some for medical reasons.
If my stomach isn't acting up, I can eat a small amount of pot roast or
bacon. But I had a popcorn incident the other day so I'm being vey careful
with everything now.

What's a popcorn incident? Sounds serious.

I don't eat it much, so probably why I never had any incidents.
Does it only happen with real popcorn, or can incidents occur with
the microwave packs?

It was real popcorn, popped in a pan. I spent the rest of the night throwing
it back up again. I have to watch things with fiber, fat and tough to digest
meats, like steak.

Gastroparesis is paralysis of the vagus nerve. Mine is not a constant thing.
Some people have it so badly. they can't eat at all. They have to be on a
feeding tube.

My worst time was when I was on the raw, vegan diet. The gastroparesis had
not yet been diagnosed. The Dr. told me I could continue on it so long as
the gastroparesis wasn't acting up. But... It was. So...

The bitch of the thing is that I can feel fine one minute and then I'll just
get an odd feeling in my stomach. It's not a pain. I don't get the feeling
that I'll throw up. It just doesn't feel normal. And from there, it's all
downhill.

The main causes of gastroparesis are diabetes and celiac, but I know of two
people who have it for other reasons. One is a minor on a feeding tube. The
other is a young adult and she often has to be admitted to the hospital for
a feeding tube and IV.

I don't like ground chicken or ground turkey, either. Then again, I've
never had a doctor insist I eat ground meat of any kind.

Popcorn isn't healthful. Then again, you've *always* had shopping
problems. The vegetables from the co-op weren't what you wanted. Limp
celery. No such Swiss cheese in Bothell!

I recall numerous posts where you you were given suggestions and when
provided you said "Ewww! I don't like that" and/or "no one else will eat
it". Your ex-husband made a point of eating before he came home from
work because he didn't want to eat what you had cooked. Surely you
remember you said you used to buy meat and cook it all at once when you
got it home. Can you blame anyone for not wanting to eat a reheated
pre-cooked steak? UGH! Oh, and there were the frozen 'Hot Pockets' you
thought the gardener and Angela might like. Oh dear.

Never mind. I've got my own problems to deal with. Good luck with
shopping again. Hope you can find some actual meat. There is no
regulation in Bothell that says you can only buy food every two weeks.

Popcorn is very healthy. Co-op? What co-op? I've never been in a co-op. What
I did discover is that Safeway and Albertsons don't sell Swiss. Neither does
the QFC near me. Every QFC is different. Some sell things that others
don't. I can get Swiss at Walmart, Winco and Fred Meyer.

That is not true about my ex. I complained once when I made some sort of
special dinner for him and he stopped for Pho on the way home. One time.
One! But on RFC it somehow morphed into something else. That doesn't matter
any more. We've been divorced for over two years now and he can make or get
his own food.

As for the cooked meat, I made the mistake once. Yes, again, ONCE of buying
some bad meat. My SIL who does not cook, bought tons of this meat, thinking
it was some special that only she could get (it wasn't) and giving it to
people. Thing was, in order to get the meat, you had to buy a ton of it.
Yes, I cooked it all. Yes, I put it in the freezer. And when I discovered it
was bad, I threw it all out.

When Angela was living here, she ate plain, cooked chicken breasts. I did
buy those, cook them and freeze them. She could go to the freezer and get
one. That worked for her. There were no complaints.

I eat ground beef. I do cook that in advance. Sometimes plain. Sometimes
taco seasoned. All portioned out into single servings. I generally only do
this when I buy a large package. I haven't bought a large package for some
time as I've been findng the 1 pound packages.

The hot pockets were a marked down item and I didn't pay much for them. You
don't live with others and you don'[t buy food for others. I would never
expect others to eat what I eat every day since my diet is limited.
>
> Never mind. I've got my own problems to deal with. Good luck with

Like I said... I won't be shopping for some time. I think I have everything
I need for the time being. Might buy some cottage cheese as that doesn't
keep for long, and probably some more beverages. Just looked at then closet
in my room as I stashed some food in there. Will probably use the last of
the ground beef with boxed mac and cheese.

And now? I'm going to go outside for some cooler air and read the book about
Dave Grohl. Dinner will be mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, and a piece
of cheese.

In the USA, even poor people with no insurance or money can go
into a hospital emergency room. No one is refused and they
even expect that they might not get paid.

However, that's for the initial problem. If you require future
surgeries for better repairs, then you're out of luck.

An EMT told me once that if I ever have to go to an
emergency room, call a (free here) ambulance and let them take
you there. The ambulance people get right in for care. If
you drive yourself there, you might sit and wait for hours
unless it's a life threatening emergency.

It's quite simple:

If you're rich, you can buy whatever insurance you want or pay for your
own medical care.

If you have a good job, your employer pays for most of your medical
insurance.

If you have a crappy job, you can buy insurance on the ACA exchanges or
do without.

If you have no job (or a REALLY crappy job), you qualify for Medicaid,
a type of government health insurance.

If you are over 65, you qualify for Medicare, a type of government health
insurance.

A lot of people are happy with it. A lot of people who might benefit
from national health insurance and even more who might not, hate the
idea of paying for part of someone else's health insurance.

Depends which soup.
The low calorie ones are terrible, watery and tasteless.
The rich and hearty ones are excellent.
I only buy some when they are on sale, the regular price I think is
too high... $3 for a can of soup is outrageous. At the beginning of
fall they drop below half price. They're very convenient for when I
don't feel like cooking a large pot of soup and feel like something
different from what I have in the freezer. Their chunky tomato is
very good turned into eggdrop... very thick with a rich tomato flavor,
could possibly be used as a pasta sauce. I add a half cup of water
(that I use to rinse out the remains in the can) and thicken with
cornstarch, and while boiling stir in two beaten eggs, good with
crispy chow mein noodles. I add fresh ground white pepper and a
splash of soy sauce. There are several Progresso soups that I like,
their Italian wedding soup is very good too, I add a pinch of Italian
herb blend and a shake of parm. I typically add to canned soups.

And then everybody else who uses that hospital pays for the ER
visit. And everybody else who uses that ambulance company
pays for the ambulance ride.

Some of those ER visits are for problems a general practitioner
could deal with, and some of them are for problems that result from
an untreated chronic condition (like diabetes) turning into an
acute emergency.

A lot of poor folk use the ER as their primary medical care. I get to have checkup for monitoring my diabetes and schedule dental work and purchase meds. For poor folks, that's an unthinkable luxury. That sucks.

All low calorie canned soups are terrible. So are canned low sodium
soups. The last time I bought "rich & hearty" Progresso soup it was
clam chowder and it turned out to be thin, watery and pretty much
tasteless. And yes, I've tried their rich and hearty canned wild rice
soup with chicken and it was a huge disappointment. I can make wild
rice soup with chicken stock and oh boy, cooked wild rice with cream
that tastes so much better.

> very good turned into eggdrop... very thick with a rich tomato flavor,

Sorry, but I do not want tomatoey egg drop soup. Not saying you can't
drop an egg in Progresso chunky tomato soup and enjoy it but it's not at
all traditional.

In the US an ambulance may not be covered, if an emergency from say an
auto wreck and the police call the ambulance will bring you to the
hospital and they will work out payment later. If one has medical
insurance most cover for ambulance. Without medical coverage one is
at the mercy of the system, you'll get ER care but not one's choice of
doctor and not immediate care either, you'll wait your turn... you can
be laying on a gurney in a hallway for several hours.... they treat
those with insurance first. I wouldn't want to need medical care
without having medical insurance.
When I recently needed cateract surgery since that's an elective I was
able to have the best eye surgeon in the county and was treated
rightaway, and my aftercare was superb. I'd not want to need cataract
surgery and have no insurance. I have a good insurance plan but I
still had to pay $2,400 for the special astigmatism lenses and to have
them inserted. With the special lenses inserted I no longer need to
wear glasses. I only need to very occasionally use readers, cheapies
from the 99¢ store. At first I bought readers from Walgreens for $30,
they fell apart the first time I used them, brought them back and got
a credit on my Visa. The 99¢ cheapies work great, in fact I bought
two pair, one for my computer desk, one for the bedroom to read the TV
guide thingie from Dish. Since the cateract surgery I don't ever
remember having such good vision, anyone with cataracts shouldn't
wait, have it done rightaway, I should have had it done five years
ago... since my surgery I can see lady parts through their clothes...
not that I ever needed to see their bra label to know their size. ;)

Car crash victims are more likely covered by insurance.

Maybe you can get the shooters to run over their victims instead of
shooting them.

Yes, in the end, selfishness is the problem. Americans are too selfish

I'm saying it's a false economy to not have national health insurance
for everybody.

And that the ER treating everybody is not as joyous as one might think.
They do try to go after the money. Even if they only recover $3000 on
a $30,000 bill, it's often enough to break the person who has collection
agents hounding them because they had to go to the ER.

We have lots of Urgent Care places here that are not attached to any
hospitals but most don't take my insurance. There is a Swedish ER near here.
It does not have a hospital there but is attached to the Swedish and
Providence hospitals. They will transport from there to the hospital via
ambulance if you need to go. Not sure if they charge for the ambulance or
not. My insurance is such that I would normally have to pay for the
ambulance.

Virginia Beach has an all-volunteer fire and rescue dept.
Never a charge ever for people that need the help and
no salaries for the people that do the work.

The city does give them some basic support but they mainly
depend on donations. They beg for money (fund drives) almost
as often as PBS does.

I donate to them each year but never to PBS. PBS could
easily support themselves if they tried.

That's absurd. My township of 39,000 people has a professional,

Our town of 10,000 had a mix. During the day it was difficult to get
enough volunteers during the day when people worked so they had a paid
crew. Other times it was volunteer staffed.

They would bill for ambulance if you had insurance as it helped with the
funding. Fire department is 100% volunteer.

In most towns today, the volunteers are as well trained, professional,
and competent as the paid crews.
