Excerpt:

...When Yustin set up a GoFundMe to help pay for her dad’s funeral, she says she didn’t expect to raise the $5,500 she had been quoted by funeral homes. “I didn’t have that money, I didn’t know what else to do, and my mom was in the hospital. I didn’t think we were going to reach the goal, to be honest,” she says. Within a few hours, donations came pouring in not just from friends and family but his former co-workers. She has raised nearly $20,000. “They were just saying these kind words, how much they loved working with him, he was an inspiration, how good of a guy he was.”

“When I heard about Jesus’s death, I thought about all the other people who I have worked with. There are a thousand of those guys who are just the nameless, faceless workhorses who don’t get the love they deserve,” says Dean Sheremet, who worked with Melendez for two years and is now head of food and beverage for the Edition Hotels.

Fine-dining kitchens are known as brutal, sometimes vicious work environments. The back of the house at Jean Georges is no exception, yet when asked about Melendez, his former co-workers shower him with compliments...

A friend of mine donated to a GFM request from his son's partner in LA.
Ever since then he has been pestered every day with requests from
others. He now wishes that he had sent her a cheque instead!

I am all in favour GFM fundraising rather than expecting the government
to step in an bail people out. If people care enough that they think the
government should pay they can put up their own money. I have seen GFM
pleas for funeral expenses for victims of violent crimes who were from
poor families where they were aiming for $35,000. Wow! That is a hell
of a lot of money for a funeral even for a wealthy person. Dream on.

Sadly, fund raising has become a business, and a lot of the money raised
goes to pay high salaries. If you give a big enough donation to get a
tax receipt they get your name, telephone number, address and email
address, and they will be on your case every year year or maybe even
every month to try to get you to donate more. They also sell you name.
One year I gave a substantial amount to the Cancer Society. The next
thing I knew I was being solicited by cancer societies for every part of
the body. Then there was the hospice out in Victoria BC to which my
wife had donated money in memory of an old school friend. They send beg
letters every month for years.

FWIW, our prime minister has just offered a bundle of money to
charities to help them through Covid 19. That should be comforting to
the president of the United Way who pulls in more than $1.7 million.

Covid-19 kills people in stunning ways. It'll kill you with pneumonia, or through strokes, or heart attacks, or kidney failure, or total organ failure. What we're learning about this novel virus is that it's something we've never seen before. People will think they're smarter than the virus - we ain't. We'll learn that lesson soon enough.

The Covid-19 is a smart cookie however, this Chinese is smarter that every other human on earth. It's hard to imagine that such a creature even exists. We should all strive to go about our tasks with such determination and sense of purpose. Now I shall set off to go make some meat pies. They will be very good pies. Not as good as hers though...

It's starting to sound to me like an engineered bio-weapon rather
than something that naturally came from bat sashimi. (Tin foil
hat comment)

Did you get a PhD in microbiology? Congratulations!

Nah. I'm a dummy, remember? Just a random thought. Could be
right though. You don't know anymore than I do. Or do you?

Speaking of PhD's though. My nifty brother has one in Chemistry.
He worked on a team that actually won a Nobel Prize. Although
only the boss of the team was awarded with it (or maybe just
accepted it), the entire team traveled to where ever to accept
the award. Somewhere in Europe.

I don't know as much as a microbiologist. I might know more than you.
Apart from taking a quiz, I don't know how we'd measure it.

That would depend on the subject of the quiz.

Here's an interesting thing. I once looked up the US citizen
test for imigrants to get their citizenship. I have a friend
that took it once.

I was curious about it so I found a sample test and took it
just to see if a US citizen (at least me) could pass it
without studying.
I got 47-48 out of the 50 questions right. Had to guess on a
couple of them.

Interesting to do in your spare time. :)

Microbiology, of course. Virology would be more pertinent.

LOL. Well so far Bruce, I've managed to NOT drink bleach.
Your wife has really messed you up. Or is it YOU that has
messed her up?

I've already emailed President Trump to apprise him that disinfectant
means Crystal Palace Vodka... he's going to order Crystal Palace Vodka
wipes be manufactured by the jillions, and along with imbibing no
virus can survive... and everyone should do their 30 minutes per side
of daily sun bathing au naturale.
Anyway with our AprilAir filter all the air in our house is
continuously subjected to UV... as is all our water. Treating the air
one breathes with UV makes a big difference in contracting respiratory
disease. Since adding the UV lamps to our A/C and water 18 years ago
neither of us has had a cold. Treating our water with UV has made a
huge difference in getting skin rashes, sores, and all skin ailments.
Treating our air with UV has eliminated all respiratory illnesses. I
still have COPD from smoking but no longer having colds makes a big
difference in my comfort level. I wish I had known of the inexpensive
UV devises years ago... costs very little to have UV lamps installed
and maintained, far less than doctor visits and medication.
