I don't know who all is doing all this impostering BS, but it seems to me that the only way to deal with it is to have everyone posting with actual newsreader software where the headers authenticate the poster, and have all the regulars be attentive to that. I confess, I'm not very Usenet savvy, and I have some learning to do, plus, I need to get that newsserver account, and a real newsreader. Thank you to all of you who have offered advice.

Most Usenet groups are too far gone, and binaries might be moribund, but unmoderated, text only NGs could and should survive, as they're so resource unintensive--remember the concerns about *bandwidth*?

I can't answer any replies tonight, as I have to restart my monster to deal with the mortgage stuff for my son's house, but I'll be back on tomorrow.

For the most part, it's easy to tell who the impostors are. Most of their posts
are not that subtle.

The real trick is to resist the temptation to play with them. Of course that's
a difficulty when responding to some of our regulars, too.
