I bought an air fryer a yesr or two ago along with two or three books of
air fryer recipes. After going through the books several times I didn't see
any recipes that couldn't be cooked easily by other means. The fryer sits
unused.

Those of you who use air fryers, what am I missing? What types of recipes
should I be looking for?

TIA

Air fryer's were jes a gimmick to get you to buy more "stuff".

I'd wait until sous vide units get close to $50.00usd, used. You
still hafta buy a Food Saver vac sealer, but I jes tossed one (had
two), so I know those are coming down.

That's my OPINION and I'm sticking to it. ;)

It does an okay job on fish sticks. It's faster than a toaster oven. I suppose that it does best with frozen, breaded, items. I reheated a McDonald's apple pie that turned out pretty good. It only took about 3 minutes at the highest temperature. Mostly, it's easier to list stuff that it doesn't cook very well.

Does the name air FRYER give you a clue ? We use ours quite often ,
probably 5-7 times a week . From making french fries - fresh cut - to
warming breaded chicken tenders , tater tots , egg rolls , and corn dogs
, we find it very versatile for anything "fried" .

I don't really use recipes. I heat things like Tater Tots in mine. I have
also done roasted vegetables.

It would do the same thing in my house - sit, unused. I don't fry
enough things to worry about oil or needing an alternate cooking method
(air fryer). I can easily cook whatever I want in the oven or a skillet
on the stovetop. Using very little or even sometimes even no oil.

You got booklets of air fryer recipes. Can't figure out what to use it
for? That's because it's a useless kitchen gadget. JMHO, of course.

No need to get all bitchy about it. I said it does fish sticks okay. It does McDonald's Apple pies okay. My guess it that Tater-Tots would work swell. It doesn't do breaded oysters very well as seen in the following link. They look like pitiful sickly things. They had to be covered up in shame.

<grin> we do like ours and use it often . I've been cutting medium size
spuds in half lengthwise then slicing into 1/4" thick slices . Toss in a
gallon zip-lock with a couple or 3 tablespoons of oil and some
season-all then into the AF on high temp for 25 minutes or so . Shake

Well, they're pretty fast, no flipping food, and you can 'fry' food with
a minimal amount of oil. The oil can be sprayed onto the food before it
goes into the fryer resulting in a crispy exterior. Fried chicken is
very good in the air fryer for one.

Plain old salt and pepper makes for a tasty fry too . You can control
the crispness and texture by how thick you cut them and how long you
cook them - just like deep frying .

roasted potatoes, or for cooking up frozen sweet potato fries.

We put the cut potatoes in a stainless bowl, drizzle a little oil on
them and toss them around until they are evenly coated. It really
doesn't take much oil to do the job.

Yeah , but if you try that with chicken all the coating falls off . I
do basically the same as you do with taters , just in a zip-lock baggie
. Hmm , I wonder if coating the chicken with oil first then rolling it
in a seasoned coating mix would work .

PAM makes a small spray bottle with your choice of canola or olive oil.
I picked up my bottle at Walmart and it does really good job. Once
it is empty I will fill it with my safflower oil. But the spray oil I
have now does really well for spraying floured chicken. It produces
chicken in the air fryer like it was done in a skillet on top of the stove.

Amazon sells a metal spray bottle just for oils and little pricey I think
for a spray bottle.

Flour your chicken first then spray with the oil to make sure all the
flour is coated. If not you just end up with chicken with uncooked
flour on the outside. The oil gives the chicken the crispy crust and
aids in browning, too.

They're probably baked in a gigantic factory on a moving belt that passes
through an oven. Even if the oven transit time is 20 minutes, they're
baking hundreds of pies at once. They probably use completely cooked
filling so they only have to bake enough to cook the crust.

Then reheated at the store.

Well evidently, oil and alcohol do not mix. It would probably help to get the oil thinned down to improve the spraying and reduce clogging. The only question is what solvent would be appropriate? Acetone?

Walnut, safflower, soy, and grape seed, oils have the lowest viscosity. Soy is probably the cheapest oil. There might be a market for a spray-able oil that can be used in a regular spray container.

Well the Vodka doesn't mix very well and it turns the oil cloudy. I will be testing the mix. If it improves the spray that would be great.

I cooked up a hamburger in the air fryer. It turned out pretty good. The good thing is that there's no splattering oil all over the place. The bad thing is that I can only cook one at a time.

Look I will give you most likely the most accurate information about
airfryers that you can ever find.

It is like the microwave, the first ones were not powerful and they
were gimmick appliances.
I am telling you now that airfryers are the best cooking appliance
since the knife. Yeah that long ago.

But only for certain people. For singles it is better than sliced
bread. Married couples it can be great also. Three people would be the
limit and four people it would be hard to cook enough food.

Let me ask you do you have the basket fryer or do you have an airfryer
oven?

With the airfryer oven you can fry, bake, steam, broil, roast, toast
dehydrate, preserve, pickle and I am sure there are a few others. I
can put a pot of stew in a small dutch oven and use the airfryer oven
to cook it.

The only draw back really is that it is hard to boil water. You would
not boil water in an oven would you? Well of course not it would be a
waste of power and take much longer.
You can however make boiled eggs in an airfryer faster than you can
with water because you do not need to heat up the water because you do
not even need to use water.

If you want healthy airfryer recipes go here. It is a new site and
there are not many recipes there yet but some will be added often!

It fits 4 meatballs.

I made wings on mine once and I would not call it a success. It's a good
sized air fryer but it wasn't really big enough for a decent serving of
wings. They were too close together and touching, so they came out soft
and greasy. I imagine that I could have cooked half as many at a time,
but it took 18 minutes for that batch and taking close to 40 minutes to
cook a serving of wings is not acceptable.

But were those meatballs the size of grapefruits or were they the size of
ping-pong balls? Whether you guys believe it or not, size DOES matter.

I can get about 6-8 wings in mine which I know for some people is just an

You can buy some that are rather large but being larger they do take up a
good bit of counter space. The larger size would also add to their cost.

There are a few new oven types on the market now. Emeril is hawking one
for about $200 that air fries, bakes, dehydrates. Then there is the
Brava for #1100 and up. Bakes, fries, toasts, cleans your windows and
washes your car. Well, it should for that price. It uses light for heat.

Another space-hogging appliance. Honestly, if a person bought all the
cooking gadgets to end all other cooking gadgets being offered you'd
have to have a kitchen as large as a basketball court. Or a gigantic
pantry to store all these appliances.

An air fryer is just a miniature forced-air (erroneous labelled
'convection') oven with the disadvantages:

- space-hogging, as you pointed out.
- power cord; usually short because of amperage.
- smaller. (Also makes it more difficult to clean.)
- difficult to view food compared to oven window.

The only possible advantages I can guess:

- A higher thermal transfer rate due to higher temperature AND higher
forced air current flow. You can cook a small quantity of food much
faster. This is good for a single entree of chicken wings or fries.

- A spare oven when the main oven is already cooking.

I've got the Ninja Foodi which is also a pressure cooker, slow cooker,
dehydrator, and all the other things it does such as roast, etc. It holds
quite a bit but it is very large and heavy. But it's not hard to view foods
cooking unless you are using the pressure function.

I can do 6-8 chicken wings in it but I have a toaster convection oven
when I don't want to use the stove oven. The Ninja Foodi people have
also come out with just an air fryer/grill and it's large and would do
plenty of fries or wings. But it, too, is a space hog, and the lid
can be raised at any time to view your vittles.

I use my basement. When I store stuff in my basement I use a magic
marker to write the date on it when it went there. Anything I notice
with a date more than five years old goes in the trash.

I cooked some salmon in the air fryer. The family needs to have a low fat dish. The fish was prepared Japan style. The fish was salted on both sides and allowed to sit for 20 minutes. The surface was wiped dry and blasted in the air fryer for 3 minutes @ 400 degrees. Then the skin side was hit with a propane torch. If it had been brushed with a shiny glaze, it would have been awesome. Maybe next time.

My family's on a diet so this is the kind of meals they're getting once a day. I don't ever cook like this. Mostly, I cook high fat, high temperature frying. The air fryer makes it easy to cook low fat.
