So, in what way is that 'vegetarian'? Do you feel that it's common to
add meat to such a combination?

No, just a poseur.

Most Americans would probably have added some pork fat.

Well, they even add it to a can of turnip greens or a can of lima
beans. I think they use pork fat and sugar as pacifiers, to stop
crying.

Canned turnip greens are repulsive. Greens should never be canned. Even spinach, which I adore cooked from fresh or frozen, becomes disgusting when canned. Other veggies that should never be canned are the Brassicas and asparagus.

I've never had or seen canned turnip greens or canned cabbage, but I
had asparagus from a glass jar recently. It had a vague hint of
asparagus but was a mushy mess.

It's just that part of the year we can only get green asparagus from
countries like Peru here. They've been treated to keep them "good" for
weeks on the boat.

And fresh white asparagus is even harder to find. I guess you can't
emigrate to the other side of the world and not miss anything. I get
other things in return.

The Margaret Holmes or Glory brands of seasoned turnips greens are quite
good. Give either one a try.

I like one of those brands, but the other one seems over seasoned.
Damn if I can remember which is which now. I'm talking in general,
not just the turnip greens.

Maybe druce can provide ingredient lists ... something might jog my
memory.

_To me_ Margaret's turnip greens are just slightly more seasoned than
the Glory brand. It's been a while since I've eaten either one and I
shy away from either now.

Glory Foods Turnip Greens:
"turnip greens, water, less than 2% of sugar, salt, hydrolyzed soy
prothi"

I don't know what "hydrolized soy prothi" is (protein probably) and
the sugar is unavoidable in your climes. So it's not too bad, but see
what happens when they add diced turnips:

Glory Foods Turnip Greens with Diced Turnips:
"Cut Leaf Turnip Greens, Diced Turnips, Water, Monosodium Glutamate,
Sugar, Salt, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Onions, Pork Flavor (Pork Broth,
Yeast Extract, Maltodextrin, Flavor, Disodium Guanylate And
Inosinate), Red Bell Pepper, Bacon Fat, Spices, Sodium Diacetate,
Gelatin, Natural Hickory Smoke Flavor, Garlic Powder. Contains:
Soybean Products."

The whole circus comes out to play because they add diced turnips?

I'm not a turnip fan no matter who cooks them. But I've not eaten turnip
greens in two years so it doesn't matter to me what they put in their cans.

I saw Don Rickles live at the Mapes or Riverside Hotel in Reno when his
particular brand of humor was taking off in the late sixties. He was edgy
and not particularly funny. I hoped he wouldn’t point at me to rag on
during his performance, and he didn’t.
Bruce is a laff riot, so he has a ways to go to reach Rickles level,
although his pescatarian schtick is a good start.
