Last night I got a text from my granddaughter "I have something for
you". I saw her today and it was a Kobe beef sirloin steak. She
appreciated good stuff and knows I do too.

At Christmas, a friend gave me a basket that included three bottle of
Robert Mondavi wine, one being a Cabernet. Knowing it is an excellent
wine, I figured I have it with a good steak. That came together today.

Kobe beef steak, baked potato, onions, salad. Mondavi wine.

I even sat at the dining room table instead of a TV tray in front of the
TV. Classy meal deserves a classy setting.

The onions were sauteed with bacon, then added brown sugar and bourbon.

That sounds great.

We used to do an easy side dish of sauteed onion, peppers and mushroom
with a little garlic, then add a mixture of soy sauce, brown sugar and
sherry. It was delicious. Maybe it is time to resurrect that recipe.

Does she know you were born a couple of yards short of the paddock?

I made a good size batch of this. Goes good with scrambled eggs or
crackers and cheese too.

What is your onion salad like? There is a lot of variation.

This is simple. I take a pound of bacon and cut into strips about 3/8"
wide. toss into a large enough pan, mine is 11".

Original recipe called for sweet onions but works with any. I used
about 5 quartered and sliced. Once the onions are near done, I gave a
glob of Dijon mustard. a half cup of brown sugar and maybe a cup of
bourbon and stirred. Cook until reduced.

With steak I usually make onions and mushrooms but did not think to get
any until too late. This was good though.

I don't think of is as a salad as much as a condiment. Unlike greens,
not something you have alone for lunch.

The original recipe I saw was to use Strawberry Onions. They are a
large sweet onion planted around the perimeter of strawberry fields and
will start to harvest in February.

Note the comma between onions and salad. Onions and salad,
not onion salad.

I like those with steak too. Assuming a pan fried steak, I'll deglaze
the pan with water, butter and mushrooms and onions. Let it simmer and
reduce then top the steak with it all.

My favorite additions to that meal is deep fried shoestring fries and a
pile of buttered corn kernels. Bread & butter too.

He doesn't seem to comprehend that these constant insults, which aren't
even remotely funny or interesting, is why he is constantly spam-forged
with posts. When you are a jerk most of the time, that's what happens.

When I have fresh tomatoes, I make red onion, tomato and cucumber salad
with a vinaigrette. That's as close as I get to an onion salad, although
I've often sprinkled scallion slices on a lettuce salad.

Tomato, onion, and cucumber salad is great! One of the Chinese restaurants
that I stop in at occasionally also makes this using a creamy Italian dressing
and it's quite good, too.

Hmm, that's interesting for a Chinese dish. Grandma always cut up
tomatoes and cucumbers into a salad. If I can pick two veggies that I
don't care for raw in a salad, my picks would probably be tomato and
cucumber. She mixed them with vinegar and oil, and that never did it
for me. Maybe using Italian dressing would help. Probably not, I don't
care for cucumbers unless they are dill pickled.

Most nights I have a salad with tomato. I like a cucumber salad that my
grandmother made. Best made a few hours ahead.

Peeled and sliced thin cucumber
Thin slice onion
Sour cream
Splash of vinegar
Salt and pepper
