I'm now retired, and have gotten a real news server and a very
nice command-line client. Reading Usenet like it's 1989.

Congratulations and enjoy your retirement. Why the Usenet change now?
Is it because you've switched operating systems (if you did)?

I'm sure she'll answer you but the fact is Google worked just fine when
she was posting from the office. She's often said when she retired
she'd get a real" news server and news client. IIRC she's always

No, I've been using Google Groups on Linux for quite a while. I
adopted a real newsreader so I can killfile people and enjoy Usenet
just that much more, without having to wade through endless junk.
Google Groups really does suck dead donkey dongs. I wasn't strongly
motivated to put in the work to set it up, since I was spending
8 hours a day at the keyboard anyway.

I found that retirement can be quite a shock at first. All of the
sudden, so much free time.

I've gained weight since just not being as active. Not a good thing.

I still work part time (on an as they need me basis) but it's computer
work sitting in a chair at home, not out each day climbing ladders, or
just on your feet all day thing.

I'm a lot more active (although it's early days yet). Of course,
most of that activity has been snowblowing. Come to think of it,
I would have that same activity whether or not I was working.

if you can run a Windows desktop and that is the level of
your interaction there are plenty of Linux desktops that will
do that.

underneath things are different and it does take time to
figure some things out, but like any other bit of learning
eventually it will stick if you use it enough.

of course there are some vendors of devices that don't
make Linux drivers. that's ok with me. i don't usually
need to buy such customized hardware.

When I lived in Memphis I worked with Unix. The claims software we
wrote/supported had a GUI interface so the end-users had no idea it
wasn't actually running on Windows. Their desktop machines were Windows
PC's but most of them didn't know the underlying operating system for
the claims software was Unix.

I used to love my job but things were changing. The government was
cutting back and contracting out. I didn't think that we would ever be
privatized, but there was the possibility that we would be taken over by
another agency. We used to have regular "changes and transition"
sessions where they would prepare us for the major lay-offs. I was
working with the sword of Damocles over my head. They offered senior
staff an early retirement with pull pension and benefits allowing me to
go 5 years early. I jumped on it and never looked back.

Not for the bulk of the snow removal. But there are a few
areas where the snowblower doesn't work. Those are always
done last, and it feels like the Labors of Hercules to do
that last little bit.

In the 1990s, there was a superhero cartoon. In one episode
there was a villain convention. One middle-aged female villain
had a product called "Can o' Man". Looked like a can of hairspray.
Spray it and out popped a burly golem that would do any work she
wanted. *sigh*

My wife (not a techie) managed to set herself up (Win 10) to print to the
Brother MFC-240C of my Linux system without me doing anything special to
share it for her. I don't know if she did it before or after I tried to
share the printer to my emulated Win 3.11 system. (Print sharing is not
working, but bi-directional Samba - Win 3.11 file-sharing ok.)

I suppose it's time for an experiment to see it it's my Samba server
sharing it, or if Win 10 has access to default Unix-style printer sharing.

When we had a snowstorm hurricane, White Juan it was called, that's
when I phoned my friend, a real estate agent and said 'put the house
on the market' - he said 'you and about ten others!!'

I went out every few hours and did a bit more, not necessary to get up
to the road that quickly as it was 6 days before the plough got down
our little road. When it did come, it got stuck, while he waited for
help, I asked him in for a coffee, he was very grateful, especially
when I asked him if he'd like it heated up with some rum :)

Even now, in my condo, when I hear them out clearing the snow, I love
it! Not work I ever want to do again.

Those big mac specials are wonderful, but you have to exercise and have diet drinks regularly.

i much prefer that. as long as i'm healthy enough i'll keep
shovelling it. my back needs the exercise and i like it plus
the fresh air and having an excuse to go outside and do
something useful.

Maybe. For sure you can't out-exercise crappy genes. My buddy
at work (heh) is on his second stent. His wife is an M.D. (family
practice, IIRC) and she makes sure he eats right and exercises. I
think he said his grandfather was dead of a heart attack in his 40s.

Congratulations!

Do you miss typing "Cindy Hamilton" after each post? hehe

I'm not sure that I'm ready to go Linux, but I'm undecided. I'm
probably going to find another news client here at some point, and maybe
even pay for a block type news account instead of free ES. Spending
those $5 might be me moving up in the world ;)

I was out with the snow blower this morning. My son had an appointment
in town and stopped by on the way and shovelled the steps and around the
cars while I did the driveway with the blower. Between 20" last week
and another 6-8 inches today, there are some serious piles and windrows
around. One of the big concerns on city side streets is that there is
nowhere to put the snow.

For the next week we are looking at a degree or two above or below
freezing for day time highs. That means a cycle of freezing and thawing
that is going to result in a lot of very hard, slick ice everywhere...
and blocked drains.

There's nothing useful about shoveling snow... shoveling snow is less
useful than shoveling shit uphill, snow will eventually evaporate and
come right back again, you've accomplished nothing.
Shoveling dirt for a vegetable garden is what's useful.

You really need a snowplow. If you can afford a snow blower you can
more easily afford a snow plow... attach a plow to your riding
lawnmower. Snow blowers are as if not more dangerous than chain saws.

I have seen some dangerous things done with snow blowers. When I was out
today I saw a guy with a snow blower blowing it at a young kid about 15
feet away. Bloody stupid thing to do. You don't know what is going to
come flying out of those things. or get hit by the auger and flying more
of less straight ahead.

I was officially qualified to operate a snow blower. The blower was
mounted in a diesel powered front end loader. The blower itself was
powered powered by a 589 cubic inch IH truck engine. The chute was
controlled by electric over hydraulic and could rotate 360 degrees and
the aimed up or down, all done from within a heated cab. No one was to
be anywhere in 1front of that blower when it was running. Someone could
go ahead and check for hazards, but not when it was running.
