The only way cellphones become idols is because weak-minded people
let them.

I carry a cellphone. It's in my pocket, not in my hand.

None of us crotchety old farts makes much use of cellphones. I wonder

I am totally connected, wi fi, phones, alexa etc but get one call a week and call out one a month. My att bill was 126 for 2 smart phones, 4 tablets, roku and a bunch. My tv was 166. Our internet (10+ Mb/sec DSL 12 miles from town) and phone is under a
hundred a month , we stream all our TV content over the internet for
under 25 bucks a month . I think the cell phone is like 70 bucks a year
. As of right now there are a total of 6 computers networked and powered
- 3 laptops and 3 desktops . Each has it's own task , for example the
laptop in the shop has shortcuts to  all my machining information on the
desktop , the one hooked to the TV has my media files , etc . But not a
single "smart" appliance or device in the house . They ALL spy on you in
one way or another . I've gone as far as covering the lens of the camera
on my "new" laptop (Lenovo T510 refurbed corporate lease return) with a
small piece of electrical tape .

Used to be, we ALL share ALL the Utility costs! And Phone USED TO BE a house Utility! UNTIL Cell Phone users got SELFISH and didn't want to pay for a house phone Utility gto save each a few bucks!! Then I had to find myself a low cost phone option and I DID!
Basictalk.com over the Internet! About $12/mo for me exclusively as my Basictalk phone is on a hardwire Ethernet feed to my room!

Now in this house, we have no Phone Utility! And Internet was always rolled into the rent, so that's what I do too! I itemize the other utilities, gas, electric, garbage, water, sewer, etc. Big Bucks rentals roll everything into Rent, which is bullshit! Makes Rents Astronomical!! My house room rents are NOT astronomical! And we all share itemized Utils! Kind of Mini-Socialism!

I figured it was something like that. Why should they pay for something
they don't use?

What difference does it make whether it's rolled into the rent or itemized?
They still have to pay it.

I can't remember renting an apartment where utilities were rolled into the
rent. I always received a bill from the electric company, the gas company,
and Ma Bell.

Seems silly to me to have an appliance on the wi-fi. Unless it can turn

Now that the nice weather has returned I am seeing a lot of young
mothers out pushing strollers. They invariably are using one hand to
push the stroller and are using the other to hold the phone they are

IIRC two years of a language course was mandatory. I took 2 years of
Spanish. The teacher was actually Spanish (not Mexican, she was from
Spain). Thing is, unless you are *really* interested in learning the
language and immersed yourself in studying it, the classes were pretty
useless. I would be hard pressed to have a conversation with anyone in
Spanish. I remember how to ask "where is the library?" but I wouldn't
understand the answer. LOL

When we lived in Bangkok, having to take Thai classes made sense. The
teacher taught *practical* usage. After teaching us numbers and about
money, she set up a faux market in the classroom with plaster fruits,
vegetables, meats and other goods. She taught us the names of those
items and how to bargain for better prices. :)

Seriously, though. You have to go into the kitchen anyway to prep and
put whatever you're cooking *in* the oven. I don't know about you but I
don't leave raw food sitting in the oven for hours waiting for a signal
to turn it on. The people who think it's a nifty feature probably don't

There is a PC mantra about not blaming victims, but I think that
pedestrians have obligation to watch out for their own safety. I
remember police officers coming around to schools to teach road safety.
We were expected to walk single file facing traffic, the wear bright
clothing, light coloured clothing at night, and to stop, look and listen
before crossing a street.

There is a lot of squawking from bicyclists about sharing the road and
watching out for cyclists. No pun intended, but it is a two way street.
They are their own worst enemies. Most cyclists around here are
adults, and they even though they are likely licensed drivers, they ride
in complete oblivion of the rules of the road. They ride in the middle
of the road, sometimes 2 or 3 abreast and refuse to move over to allow
cars to pass safely. They ignore traffic signs and lights, ride the
wrong way on one way streets and on side walks. They might get more
respect on the road if they showed a little respect themselves.

city park. At the end of my street is the dark park and community center and

I saw no reason to take a foreign language as I doubted I would visit those
countries where the offered languages were spoken. If I had visited any of
those countries I would not have been there long enough to be conversing on
an hourly basis with any of the natives.

Now that we are being swamped with Latinos, I can see where learning Spanish
would have been a benefit if I interacted with them daily.

In the last year we've gotten those electric scooters. Just this past week a
rider was killed through his own fault. He was riding on the sidewalk, which
is outlawed. He makes a sharp left off the sidewalk right out into traffic
without looking and gets pulverized by a Lyft driver. He lived about 2 days
before succumbing to his injuries. He was not a kid either, he was about 30
year old. It's not the first time these contraptions have been involved in
a serious accident. Every time it was the riders fault.

I think you see that everywhere. Running through red lights and stop signs
like they are invincible. What I find most annoying is the city has made
MANY bicycle only lanes throughout the city but you'll find 3 or more riding
abreast in the lanes meant for cars. Pedaling slowly so they can shoot the
breeze while holding up traffic.

It's unfortunate, but some people are the authors of their own
misfortune. We had a problem for a while with with long boarders. A
bunch of teens used to congregate by an intersection about a mile down
the road from out house. The road is wide enough for two way traffic
plus on road parking in both sides, and they seemed to think of it as
their personal skateboard park. They would be wheeling around, trying
stunts, falling, wandering out in front of traffic. I thought at the
time that it was just a matter of time before someone got killed. One
of them did.

They are as much a hazard to other bicyclists. I have had many near
collisions with other bikes on bike trails. The trails are wide enough
two, so on coming bikes can pass each other safely. I learned to hug the
centre of the trail because I had to many close encounters with pairs of
oncoming bikes. It is wide enough for two, not for three, and I am not
going to be forced off the trail. Stick to the centre and force them
into single file, then there is room for me to move over and pass safely.

I had a head start on high school French. We started French in Gr. 7
where I went to elementary school. We moved part way through Gr.9 and in
the new school board is was not taught until high school, so I had a two
year head start.

I did everything I could to encourage my son to become bilingual. We
sent him on a French exchange program. He went to university in Montreal
and got a job working in French and did well enough to land a job
managing a brew pub with an all French staff. He took the civil service
language and landed a good job in a bilingual position and he gets a
decent bonus for being bilingual. Having mastered French, he is now
working on Spanish and has become quite fluent.

So you check with your phone and see the milk container. It is opaque

You also want to look for relish but the milk container blocks the view.

I went to Japanese school when I was a tad, and took Spanish in intermediate school, then I took more Japanese when I went to college. The only thing I remember was that I took Japanese dos times and Spanish uno.

OTOH, the Spanish teacher sung "La Malaguena Salerosa" on the first day of class - perfectly, while playing the guitar. That's not an easy song to pull off. That pretty much made it all worthwhile.

Remember your childhood (before smart phones). Make a paper list.
It never fails to work perfectly.

I actually keep one in the van and also one in the house. Anytime
I think of something, it's added. Then I look at the weekly sale
ads before shopping.

Don't be a cheapskate miser like Sheldon either (writing on backs
of envelopes of all things lol). Paper lists are a good reason to
buy the small legal pads (5X8). Those pads are a renewable
resource and you don't have to relearn how to make a list after
getting a new phone.

Exactly "So fucking what". It is not an excuse to block traffic and
endanger themselves and others. If you call the school and complain
about the danger the kids are exposing themselves to you will likely get
the same lame attempt at justifying their bad behavior. I have worked

have never used that as excuse to do stupid things. On the contrary, we

Nothing wrong with using the back of an envelope. At least he's using some-
again (recycling) that would normally just be tossed in the trash. But as
long as he has something to write his list(s) on I don't see the problem

Agreed. I do tend to use a small pad to write my lists but the back of

My mother used to use old envelopes. I don't often bother with a

write it on. Since most of the mail I get is junk it is a good way to

It was just on the news here this morning. Florida has the highest
number of bicycle deaths in the country with 16% of them.

Common causes were dark clothing at nigh, disregard of traffic signs,
straying from bike lanes.

From the news:
A new study found Florida leads the country in bicycle deaths in 2017.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data shows 783
cyclists were killed in the U.S. in 2017, including 125 in Florida.

In 2016, some 852 cyclists were killed in the U.S. That includes 138
people who died in Florida.

The figures found about 2 percent of deaths in crashes are bicyclists.

The data shows that although child bicyclist deaths have declined over
the years, deaths among bicyclists age 20 and older have tripled since 1975.

Of course. The worst I see are the inline skaters. They swing back and
forth across the lanes. Then they have the ear buds in so they can
remain blissfully unaware of cyclists trying to pass.

We have a leash free dog park about two miles from here and it is
divided into two separate areas, one for big dogs and one for small
dogs. There have been a number of conflicts when people with big dogs
come into the small dog area. That is against the rules and there is
going to be a horrible disaster if a big dog runs into a little one or
gets into a fight with it. However, if there are no small dogs in the
park, the owners will bring their rodent sized mutts int the big dog
side so they will have someone to play with.

There have been times when some of us were in the small dog side because
of mud. When someone showed up with her small dogs we started moving
over to the other side, but she was bitching and moaning about us being
there. According to her, we should not be there even if there are no
small dogs using it.... as if it could make any difference to her if she
is not there.

I think the cyclist demographic has changed drastically over the years.
I rarely see kids on bikes. Most of the cyclists I see are at least 40.
When I go on the bike trail by the old canal the average age of the
cyclists is close to 60. That's part of what pisses me off the most
about them. They are all licensed drivers who are supposed to know the
rules of the road and are old enough to have been in elementary school
when we used to get the road safety lessons.

Cyclist demographics have indeed changed. As I saw more cyclists in my
town, I thought "Good for them". Then I noticed that a lot of the
cyclists were a bit sketchy

Spandex and a teardrop helmet -- cyclist
Clean clothes and wraparound sunglasses -- wannabe cyclist
Little kid -- nascent cyclist
Shabby clothes and a ratty backpack -- Meth and a stolen bicycle

Look for them. They're all over the place.

I've just emailed her, but she's in a different time zone, and works
late, so she won't she it til much later.
