Nothing wrong with that. Of course the RFC busybodies will disagree

You did good. Now to preserve that paint going into the front door head
out sometime this week and get an indoor/outdoor rug/runner. You won't
regret it.

Building inspectors don't dictate or enforce colors. Something is
very wrong here, but we'll probably never know what that is.

I have mixed feeling on stuff like that. My house, my property, I should
be able to do as I please. I've seen some really nice neighborhoods
where one house looked like crap with the car up on blocks, the odd
paint job, the camper pared by the trash bins, etc.

My neighbor in CT was really a nice guy, helped me a lot by cutting my
lawn and stuff. Could not ask for a better neighbor but had an SUV,
three trucks, boat, tractor, etc. All legal. Could not see it from my
house but I know others were not happy with him.

In FL it is hard to find a place with no HOA. Ours has sensible
regulations so no problem for me.

Homes in the era of Johns casa had no deed restrictions as are currently
being dictated to him. They might have said that you can't operate a
bordello on the property or could not manufacture liquor.

There is most likely a historical district overlay and those are the
folks telling him violet, pink and purple don't work. I wouldn't thing
the city of St. Louis cares what color a home is to get a rental
property certificate of occupancy. Those rules are mostly about
sanitation, safety, occupancy number, parking etc.

I also don't like HOA restrictions but you know that going in. They
effect your property rights take it or leave it. And with a vote of the
membership everything can change. Its good and bad as you say but you
may have recourse if you neighbor opens a quick oil change or parks all
his vehicles in the front lawn.

He should have a complete understanding of what his obligations are as
the property owner based on what his deed to the property says.

There are plenty of places in inside the U.S. with none.

There are some neighbourhoods in our town where there are restrictions
on things like old cars, house trailers and campers. Since I am in an
area zoned agricultural they don't apply here, but thank goodness there
is a large treed lot between me and the house two doors down. The one
right next store is set way back. The guy in the middle planted a bunch
of evergreens primarily to block the view of Redneck Mike's yard. He
has three vehicles, one of which has not moved in months. He has a
larger camper trailer and sends most of his day out there drinking. The
AC in the house does not work so he runs a generator to power the AC in
the trailer and his beer fridge. His garage is jam packed with stuff so
he bought a shipping container, which is sitting by the front corner of
his garage.

Mike likes to display his toys. He has to Harley's which he rarely
rides, but he parks them out on the driveway every day. The is a
Husquavarna lawn tractor that is rarely used but always on display. Then
there was the mini front end loader backhoe, but that got stolen last
week while Mike was away with the trailer. The thieves also tried to
get one of his motorcycles, but they dropped it and could not pick it up.

I guess the lesson he learned is that there are thieves out there
looking for things to steal and that if you have everything on display
and leave it unattended, someone is going to steal it.

It really depends on the HOA. Problems can occur when you get some
person on the Board with a lot of sway who thinks they know what's best
for everyone. A neighbor of mine was fined $25 a couple of years ago
for putting a simple concrete bird bath in his back yard. From what he
told me, another neighbor didn't like the bird bath so they complained
about it.

The notice my neighbor received said he didn't get "permission" to put a
bird bath in his yard. Oh good lord. It's not as though he erected a
replica of the Statue of Liberty behind his house. It's just a bird
bath. I felt badly for him because I'm the one who mentioned birds need
a source of fresh water year round... yeah, it was all my fault! ;)

IMHO, the powers that be who told John he can't have lavender or pink or
purple paint should have said so two years ago. He stated someone else
is in charge now and they don't like it. Or maybe his neighbors complained.

I'm not sure what the paint shade on the front porch has to do with an
"Occupancy Permit". Then again, I've never tried to run a boarding
house. I could understand if the porch was falling apart and created
some sort of hazard. That doesn't appear to be the case. At any rate,
now he has to deal with it. It's too bad they didn't bring it up before
he spent all that money painting everything pink and purple and... oh
well. :(

Sadly, many neighborhoods surrounding colleges turn into slums
eventually and reduce property value. Cheap rent for college
students but when they leave for the summer, poor people move
in for the cheap rent. And they don't leave.

And a poor neighborhood often turns into a crime zone.

Bet you his driveway side neighbors complained about the
odd back deck color and reported it. That would reduce their

If he gets an indoor/outdoor type rug/runner he won't have to pull it in
if it rains. I have no idea what direction his porch faces so it might
not receive any rain.

Plain old foot traffic will wear off the paint no matter if he put down
the finest, most expensive, Gary approved porch and floor paint available.

My brother lives in a condo, so no paint schemes, lawn maintenance,
fence style, or tuck-pointing issues. But still an HOA (or condo
association?). One of the board members called the cops on him for
having a little Smokey Joe on his balcony. Well, it turns out it's
not illegal. So egg on her face. She got all huffy about it.

At the next condo association meeting there were four new items on
the agenda. Grilling on balconies, lock boxes on doorknobs (realtor
style), welcome mats outside doors in the hallways, and stationary
cars in the parking garage (tenants pay for their assigned spots
there).

Well, it's not hard to guess four things my brother has.

Also, most votes are done by the board, not the homeowners. So if
one member has sway on the board, they pretty much run most
everything. Social media shows us just how easy it is to get people
all riled up and side with your petty arguments - tell them their
opinions before they have a chance to form their own.

I don't know how that turned out for my brother, I'll ask.
