The ONLY thing which which could cause losing both the turntable and the AUX could be the Mcintosh Preamp I have, so I'm taking it down to Alpha Tech tomorrow for a checkup! New lights too!

In what way is the turntable not working? The platter doesn't move
and/or no sound?

No sound, AUX either.

So you tried a tuner, CD player or something on the AUX?

Doesn't your preamp have a proper 'phono output? You know they're not
the same...? Umm... if you connect your turntable to AUX, you're very
likely to get very, very low sound level, if any.

Yes I know, Phono INPUTS are normally 5-10mv inputs and AUX (line level) are 100mv or so.

I've been into sound systems since before I could afford to own one! And way before I earned my EE degree, I knew a LOT more about electricity and sound systems than most people.

Yes, two phono inputs (1 and 2) and one AUX. I have a 5 into 1 Line Level RCA switchbox to have several AUX signal inputs 1 at a time.

I designed my sound system very carefully.

Well, what a stroke of luck! You have an EE degree! So you can fix it
yourself. You can tell Alpha Tech to take a hike... <smirk>.

I use the phono inputs for the turntable signal and several selectable line level devices into the AUX input of my Macintosh Preamp, now in the shop!

That would be on my priority list when I'm broke and unemployed.

John just wants to go down and pretend he still has money to flaunt
that he really doesn't have. And his "friends" at Alpha Tech will
talk and listen to him nicely.

Oh, and the djembo. Did he ever say how much that cost?

Nope, and I never will! Because a good Djembe is worth it's weight in GOLD!

And I can't wait to play mine again!

So it cost $300 bucks to replace the non-vegetarian, starved goat
skin because you were humping it with your prostagladin boner.

Has the preamp had any recent restoration work at all, things like
replacing the capacitors?

Capacitors are usually the first thing to go in old audio equipment,
they swell up and deteriorate over time. Sounds like it basically
needs a restoration, which won't be cheap. Once restored (and I assume
the shop you use is good) it should be last another 20 years.

I have a old pair of Kef speakers that were top-of-the-line back in the
70s. Some years ago, I noticed that the high frequencies were weak and
thought that my sons had blown the tweeters playing rock music when I
was away. But no, the speakers are fine but the electrolytic capacitors
in the X-overs have dried out. I don't need those speakers as I have a
pair of VMPS.

Just stick your tongue on where the AC wires come in to the transformer

Years ago bought a set of Simon Paisly monitors. A few years ago one of
the speakers started getting fuzzy, sounded like it torn speaker. I
thought that all I needed to do was to replace the speakers. I looked
around for someone to repair it but no one wanted to touch it. I ended
up having to buy a new set of speakers.

My high school friend Dago, had a big speaker cabinet with a high frequency horn on the top. Every time he'd hit a high note on his Les Paul Goldtop, all the power from the amp would jump to the horn and it would go WHHEEEEEKKKK!!! I remember playing with the guy but all I could do was watch that horn and waiting for that squawk box to go off. High frequency horns and passive crossovers kind of suck.

I've done that work with old vacuum tube radios. I have a tube tester,
isolation transformer, and voltage variac here for the work. As well
as, of course, a soldering iron, lead, and small stock of old ceramic
resistors, and some capacitors. The resistors rarely fail.

A tell-tale sign of capacitor failure is a hum on the speakers, usually
over the audio. When it's reached critical failure, I.E. plugging in a
radio that's been unplugged for 50 years, you'll only hear the hum.
It's not difficult work, but it's tedious. Find capacitors on
www.mouser.com
