Hello Helm,

Almost any recipe is good for a beginner. Making a recipe is similar to
painting by numbers.

Pick something you like and just follow the steps. Simple recipes can
actually be some of the very best. Start with good ingredients.

I learned from "Joy of Cooking" cookbook.

Old used copies are still usable.

The universal quick lunch:

Potato soup

Put just enough water to cover the vegetables into a saucepan and put
it on a burner set on "high". Reduce to "simmer" when it comes to a
boil.

While waiting for the water to boil, scrub a peice of celery, chop it
fine, and add it to the water.

Take as many potatoes as your appetite suggests, scrub, and cut into
pieces. The bigger your hurry, the smaller the pieces. Add to the
now-boiling water. Salt according to your taste.

While waiting for the potatoes to cook, chop some onion. When the
potatoes are soft or close enough, add the onion and boil until
transparent -- a minute or so.

Turn off the heat and add enough cold whole milk to bring it down to
serving temperature. (I've never tried cream, but I think it would be
very nice.)

If you substitute stock or broth for the water and leave the milk out,
it isn't potato soup, but it's still a quick lunch.

You can make up your own variations, depending on what's on hand and
what you feel like eating.

Pretty much anything here:

Look for those with good ratings. And if there's something you don't
understand, find one with a video.

My favorite beginner cookbook was the old Betty Crocker one.
Lots of tips for beginners including a spice/herb guide as
what goes with what. Many basic recipes.

Good too is it's full of color pictures of finished dishes.
Makes it nice to browse through at night and get ideas.

Could be a troll but not necessarily. Regardless, it's a good
subject.

The interesting thing is that everyone sent in one good answer.
You however, have responded 3 times here to "a troll" heh heh

And you've responded to the troll thread twice and one of those times was
to whine about my post. But you think it's such a good subject and evidently
Helm, the original poster, does, too. He hasn't been back once since making
his troll post on Monday.

Good job, Gary, good job. 'heh heh'

The troll has probably been back, not to post anything, just to see how
many people he sucked into replying.

Fell and hit their pointy little heads. Got any recipes from Europe? ;)
The reason I know this is a troll, aside from the stupid subject not
specifying recipes for anything, is the post didn't show up until people
replied. Here's the message source:
