The only thing I don't understand in the article is this sentence:
"KFC also notes that while the nuggets are plant-based, they are not
prepared in a vegan or vegetarian manner. "

I wonder what they do to make them non-vegetarian. Use animal fat?
Prepare them together with meat products?

You'd think that if they're going to offer a potentially vegetarian
food item, they'd want to tap into the vegetarian market.

My guess is that KFC is not catering to vegans. They're going after meat eaters that are tired of eating meat all of the time. It's a strategy that makes sense to me. There's a lot more of us around than vegans.

It's obvious that they can't/won't have a separate griddle or fryer with
which to cook the damn things. So although they may be cooked in
vegetable oil, that same oil has also been used to cook chicken nuggets
and is therefore contaminated in the eyes of veggienuts.

There are enough non meat eaters to make them an interesting market,
you'd think. If you're introducing a potentially vegetarian item
anyway.

Maybe it all goes in the same deep fryer fat.

Yes, that's what I think too. Too much cost/effort/room to have a
separate fryer.
