Long ago I learned the benefits of decanting red wine about an hour
before serving. It allows it to breath and improves taste and makes it
smoother.

Over the past few years I got away from it since most times I am cooking
for myself and have a half bottle. Last night I made a nice dinner for
four of us and decanted a bottle of zinfandel ahead of time. Sure made
a difference.

I put the decanter where I see it all the time and will do just a half
bottle for myself in the future. Worth the small effort.

Mine is similar to this. No need to spend a lot of money but you can.

I don't mind adding gin to wine before drinking (about 1 part gin, 2 parts wine).

I have a similar decanter. Used it a lot when I first got it and then
lazy set in. It does make a difference. Wine likes some air to open
up. Also have one of these;

https://www.amazon.com/Vintorio-Wine-Aerator-Pourer-Aerating/dp/B00T1F5CSU

It works pretty well also and you don't have to air the whole bottle if
your not going to consume it all in one sitting. Still don't use it
much. Thanks for the reminder and next red wine I open (probably
tonight) .. will use one of 'em. Zinfandel used to be my favorite
grape, now it's pinot noir. I may head back to zin since pinot has
gotten so expensive even for a middle of the road one. Everything we
buy these days has taken a huge jump in price though.

Sorta of a reverse martini? I could try a splash of wine in gin
martini, but not 2 to 1 as you do. Would rather the wine flavor.

As a matter of fact, white wine (vintage Dubonnet from the year 1900, if you have the money) goes great with gin (1:1).

I have these. I bought them in the Eighties, because I thought they
looked cool. I don't even have a cabinet to showcase them.
My wife consumes a liter of wine every five years, and I drink beer.
I thought they'd impress at the few parties I threw, along with the cool
wine glasses that go with them. I guess they did?
What a waste of money!

You should check, some decanters have really increased in value. If
you don't use them you could sell them and buy beer :)

One of those is a very pretty flat based brandy decanter. The other
could be used for just about anything. Both functional and decorative.
They are not truly "decanting" a bottle of wine.

Back in my day, it was Ripple wine with the greatest slogan ever!
"You can't make a splash without a Ripple!"
That great slogan couldn't save the wine. It died in 1984. RIP, you

Half wine and half gin is good because sometimes, wine can have good as well as bad natural tastes. The gin takes care of all of that.
