Anyone making something special for it?

My husband has a family tradition of a special meal that day but he
said it's not any one special dish (like Thanksgiving etc.). He did
recall well though that it was a family affair and everyone had a small
job or (once older) dish to make. He said they also added a small yard
project but always something to 'improve the house or yard a little'.

We've picked a simple project here. I have a little plot of dirt
bordered by sidewalk and driveway. It's about 8 inches front to back
and 2.5ft long. We are going to weed it then fill with more gardening
dirt and put in some flower seeds.

Shopping tomorrow as we are out of fresh fruit. Don wants to make his
green bean dish which means I make a white sauce with lots of white
melty cheeses (guryere sp? and havarti appeal). Acorn squash with
brown sugar. He wants me to make baguette-type bread and prepare some
garlic butter.

I'm thinking a whole cleaned trout would be good but shall see what
wonders the store has!

Rest of you? Any traditions?

No, no special meal or project here although most of the family did show up
at the cemetery and place flowers on graves. Got to see some relatives that
I've not seen for a few years.

Budae Jjigae, it's the opposite of something special.

No. It's just another day for us. Burgers for lunch, I think. Soon I'll
open a negotiation for the dinner menu.

Is Memorial Day the day Tom Cruise was born or was that the 4th of
July?

Who cared about Tom Cruise? The little twerp. ;)
"Memorial Day" is not a set date and it varies.
It's always the last Monday of May.

But what are you memorising? The first McDonalds franchise?

It's sort of the US Remembrance Day.

LOL. Well I always do but not the rest of the country.
Best franchise ever invented. The classic Mc.Hamburgers.

However, do you not really know about Memorial Day?
I'm sure you do. Easy to Google.
Honoring all military people that died fighting in
all the wars since this country started.

Maybe oddly, I've never known anyone personally that
died in Vietnam or any other war since then. Also, don't
know of any relatives that have died in any war.
During WW2, 4 of my uncles fought...3 in Europe against
the nazi mess and one in the Pacific against the Japanese.
They all came home after (with no serious injuries) and
lived to very old ages. Still one alive now. He's like
age 95, still lives alone with 6 indoors cats.

Nothing special/traditional, whatever looks good while shopping. I
already went to Tops this morning and bought potatoes, BOGO, so ten
pounds. Got three pounds of broccolli crowns at 99「/lb, and a 2 lb
London broil (top round, $3.99/lb) that I just put up for a short
marinate. As I indicated, nothing exciting.

Well, it turned out whole catfish looked the best and like Sheldon in
another post, nice London Broil (3.49lb). The London Broil was sliced
up and marinaded in sugar cane vinegar, soy sauce, worstershire and
garlic powder then set in the dehydrator.

Start steamer for green beans. Takes a bit as mine is a no-muss
no-fuss stovetop model.

The Catfish will be a simple one. Place sliced portabella mushrooms
with butter in cavity.

Mix 1 egg, 1/2c milk (or buttermilk), splash of beer. Set aside and
make a mix of 1 cup white flour, 1 cup corn flour and if you have them,
some breadcrumbs. Add seasonings of choice (Cuban Island Spice blend
here). Soak fish in liquid while large cast iron pan heats with canola
oil (corn oil acceptable). Coat fish with mix and fry approxiately 6
minutes (3 per side).

Let drain on paper towels while preparing white sauce with slices of
havarti to lace over steamed fresh green beans.

Leftover 'dough' is made to hushpuppies by adding the liquids to the
base flour (mine needed a touch more cornmeal) which are then added to
the oil and fried.

Call it 12 minutes if a well laid out kitchen.

I got some London Broil too. It was marinaded and now is making a nice
beef jerky.

We did the catfish for a late lunch since they looked good at the store
and they had no trout.

I hung the US flag out in honor of those who sacrificed their lives. I
don't look upon it as any kind of traditional food day, no.

Back off. Bruce is my friend. We talk, we disagree, we argue
too but I can read behind the lines. Bruce is a nice enough
fellow, mAybe a bit misguided right now but he'll mature. ;)
