If it works, how can it be wrong? I don't use my index and middle
fingers on the non-stationary chopstick, just the index finger.

And I was complemented in Japan years ago at my excellent use of chopsticks.

Maybe it depends on how easy it is for the use to make the Vulcan hand
salutation.

It's one correct way. There are several correct ways to hold them.

That's the way the Japanese and the locals here will handle chopsticks. OTOH, other people will hold their chopsticks differently. The Vietnamese will actually cross their sticks. I don't know how they do it.

Chopsticks vary from country to country. The Chinese like long chopsticks, the Koreans like to use skinny metal ones - those are scary as hell.

President Obama, like everybody that grew up in Hawaii, knows how to use chopstick. The weird thing is that he uses chopsticks like a Vietnamese. Why that is, I can't say. Speaking of Obama:

Does it matter? Although I have never mastered chopsticks I've always
read that however the person manipulates them and can get food into
their mouth it does not matter. The chopstick police have been disbanded
and no one will be arrested.

You do know that the Chinese invented the fork but regressed to using
sticks to eat with?

There is no 'correct'. Just find the way that works best for you. And
wooden chopsticks are easier to use that plastic ones IME (the wood
grips the food better).

I don't care how you hold yours squirt.
That doesn't matter. rfc uses Popeye's model. When he stood on the
fantail, throwing the galley's garbage overboard, it made the
united states and brooklyn new york proud.

Sailors who carry out garbage are all American heros.

Navy don't allow people from texas or marines to board navy ships.

The one thing that the picture mentioned was that the bottom
chopstick was stationary and only the top one was moved to
grasp the food. That made sense to me.

My only remaining pair of chopsticks are lacquered ones and
very slippery. The cheap unfinished wooden ones are much
better. They give you those with Chinese takeout food.

I still don't use them but have always wondered about the
proper way to hold them.

I use chopsticks that way and it has always worked well.

I've seen several alternatives, sometimes very different, but none of them
look more effective.

Some ways look like very sloppy technique and it's a wonder they work at all,
although they seem to manage quite well.

Yes, there is. 1-2-3 fingers is less 'correct' (according to the
Japanese). 4 fingers is more 'correct" (again, according to the
Japanese). Japanese prefer plastic, Chinese prefer wood, Koreans
prefer Stainless Steel. Vienamese prefer a "scissors" action (watch
'em at a pho house). I can't do it. I use a 3-4 finger Japanese
style.

I learned over time to not over think it... in my earlier days, the
more I analyzed the issue, the worse I was with chopsticks :) Stopped
thinking and worrying about it and had much greater success.

sometimes i just poke chunks of things with one and
that gets the job done.

if you want to practice use raw soybeans and rice...

for bonus points try to snag the flies out of the air.
i have actually done that once. no reason to try again

That can work :) Thai noodles can be dangerous with chopsticks. Twice
I've flicked spicy noodles in my eye using chopsticks. not good, maybe
I should wear protective glasses in future.

I've developed the skills need for cooked rice, dunno about raw
rice...

Indeed. You can now rest on your laurels... not that I even know what
a 'laurel' in this context means.

i was more surprised than the fly (due to volume of
organ registering surprise i suppose, but as they say
the fly was committed, i was just involved...)

the laurel was a plant sacred to a god in Greece
and wreaths of it were awarded to winners...

when it comes down to odd and coincidental
experiences i just remind myself that it has to
happen to someone.

like tossing a nickle across a room and having
it land in a crack and stick.

or throwing a rock and bouncing it off an edge
a few times in a row or ...

i've just concluded that in life i do a lot of
odd things.

but i can't say i've ever flicked my eye with
a noodle with hot sauce on it.

I love Kung fu movies and Hong Kong movies. The difference between Asian movies and Western movies is that Western audiences will try to find errors of logic in film. Asians don't really give a crap if stuff doesn't make any sense at all or if things seem a little "unrealistic."
