An apple, a piece of cheese and a bun.

He was asking about a "ploughman's lunch," not a regular lunch.

I've never had one unless this counts:
- tasty crackers (not plain ones)
- sliced sharp cheddar
- sliced apples

I like that occasionally.

A ploughman's lunch was typically a filled pastry but could consist of
anything that's easily carried by workmen and needs no
refrigeration... a k'nish qualifies.

i came across the term when looking for something
else and thought it was interesting as i'd not
heard of it as a specific dish or tradition before.

crusty bread, cheese, pickled onions (i was reading
about onions), and ale. sounds pretty good to me.

For me it's just the 1st 3. Chutney ruins it IMO and these days pubs
seem to think that adding salad is OK. It bloody well isn't!!!

Is it possible they're responding customer desire for a more well-rounded
meal?

I think so. However, pickles and salad just don't go together. Bread, a
piece of strong cheddar and a couple of pickled onions, with a pint of
beer, is a simple and classic combination.

Eat the salad first, then start in on everything else.

But not, I fear, sufficient. If I have a lunch that lacks
vegetables, it is simply unsatisfying.

I believe you will find it is essentially any hearty home made type of
food you could take to the field with you in a bag or a 'lunch pail'
(which wasn't really a pail).

Hard boiled eggs would have been part of it if the chickens were laying
enough. Cured sausage might have been in there or a cured bit of salt
pork.

A couple of pickled onions are vegetables.

Not nearly enough vegetables. If half (or more) of the meal
isn't vegetables, that's not enough for me.
