Ok, so it's May 5th and Cinco de Mayo. I remember in the past
years here, many posted about cooking some traditional mexican
meals for this..Especially those in California and some
south-western states.

So no mention here today about that. why?

Well, in my world, the heck with the Mexican day.

Today is also the UK National Ferret Day.
Happy day to our UK people that celebrate the little
ones on this day. A traditional meal for ferrets
would natually be a warm gravy meal. :)

Thanks O. I'll adopt more once I get settled. I sure do miss the
little ones here.

Yeah, Cinco de Mayo wasn't a thing until maybe the last decade or so. Now,
like St. Patrick's Day, it's mainly observed as an opportunity to get
shitfaced. People certainly rarely think about what it actually
commemorates.

The closest I can come to matching what I'm having for dinner is:
Children's Day in Japan. I'll be having take-out sushi. That's
not a Children's Day tradition, but it's the closest I can come
to fitting in with my plans.

Cinco de Mayo is a marketing ploy to get people out to restaurants.
It is not their day of independence which is September 16.

We don't have any ferrets here which is probably a good thing. They'd probably kill everything in sight. We do have mongoose here which is sorta similar. They were introduced here to kill rats in the cane fields. The mongoose then proceeded to kill everything in sight - except rats.

5/5 is Boy's Day in Hawaii. 3/3 is Girl's Day - just to keep things in symmetry. OTOH, Boy's Day is kind of dying off around here. It's being beat out by Cinco de Mayo. It's also my son's birthday. He calls this day "Cinco de Michael."

It's on a different island so there's not any danger at all - except maybe from a tsunami generated by the earthquakes. That volcano has been erupting for 35 years although this is the first time that cracks have appeared in someone's backyard and lava started spewing out of it. It makes an interesting sound.

The Kilauea lava flows have all been moving away from the Leilani Estates. There have been a couple of towns that were affected by the eruption of Kilauea. The Eastern side has been relatively untouched in recent times. Historically, it's been considered safe. The latest flow was something new and unexpected. OTOH, you might have access to better geological maps.

If you want to see an interesting geological feature, check out the Northeastern side of Oahu on Google Earth. You see a large debris field radiating out from the island. This is the collapsed rim of a huge crater that once existed. It left behind the awesome mountain range that runs across the length of the island. The range is a very popular and dramatic feature that's used in movies these days. The collapse of the crater rim much have created a tsunami of epic proportions.

Look at the south east corner of the island and you will see a lava flow
that took place in ~1960. That's recent. The thing is, anywhere along
that line appears to be vulnerable.

Humans aren't too concerned with events that might happen on a geological timescale. If they were, nobody would live in much of California, or the Pacific Northwest and other areas that have the potential to one day, explode, turn to rubble, or fall into the sea.

The reality is that there's not much chance of one's house being destroyed or being killed by a volcano in Hawaii. We got lots of other things though. Stuff like hurricanes, flash floods, and tsunamis. We've been hit by several devastating hurricanes in the last few decades. We had epic flooding on Kauai a couple of weeks ago. The Governor sent a request to Trump a few days ago, requesting some assistance. I'm not holding my breath. :)

We were supposed to be there this weekend for a convention but I couldn't figure out a way to swing it financially. Too bad, that would have been something to see.

I made a canned corned beef sandwich the other day. I used Palm corned beef - that stuff is just great. The corned beef was fried until the water was gone and the beef was starting to brown. I fried up some bread I made that had layers of Dubliner cheese. Some coleslaw was put on the bread and the corned beef was put on top of the slaw. What happens when you put together 3 things rich in umami flavor? You get a wonderful, intense, experience. It was almost too overpowering!

Canned corned beef is quite different from beef you cook for yourself. I really like the canned stuff because it's convenient and easy to make. If you try to make one, make sure to get Palm corned beef. Canned corned beef varies greatly in quality and Palm is the best. It's the favorite of Samoans and thousands of Samoans can't be wrong. Well, I suppose they could be wrong but I sure as heck ain't going to be the one to tell them that.

No they don't. You've never smelled it. I did once and it was
same as a mild fart that dissipated quickly. Only in *extreme*
life threatening situations does that happen. Does anyone's cat

I'm planning to try another Kentucky Derby favorite but not
because of the day. I saw these being made on Taylor Hick's show,
State Plate, last week when his featured state of the week was
Kentucky. BTW, I like that show. It's all about traditional
state's foods.

Benedictine sandwiches (or dip with crackers).
Basics are only cucumber, onion and cream cheese.

It's not local, it's a cable channel.
Look for it Mondays (that's tonight) at 7:30pm eastern time. INSP
is the channel, not a food channel. INSP shows many old westerns
too that I like to watch.

www.insp.com/shows/state-plate/

Anyway, if you have cable you might want to check it out. I like
it. It's a half-hour show and entertaining...

Just saw in my newspaper the other day that he spent last week in
Virginia filming a new episode. I'm curious as to see what 4-5
Virginia dishes he comes up with. Virginia is so diverse...ocean
seafood up to mountain food and all kinds of things inbetween.
I'll bet ham and maybe peanuts might be on it.

Tonight's state is Rhode Island. I'll like that one too as I
lived there for awhile.

:-D

Note: I never knew this until recently but Taylor Hicks was the
American Idol winner several years back. 2006, I believe.

I have.

If you smelled fart and it dissipated quickly, it was just a fart.
Your rescued pet ferrets probably had been neutere3d and their scent
glands surgically removed at the same time, for the pet market.

The smell from mustelid scent glands is nothing like a fart and it does
NOT dissipate quickly. One of our cats got sprayed once (made the
mistake of trying to catch a stoat) and the stench lasted days.

Polecat/ferrets scientific name Mustela putorius is derived from this
species' foul smell. The Latin putorius translates to stench or stink
and is the origin of the English word putrid.

Ferrets are not related to skunks but many think so. This is why
everyone assumes that ferrets stink.

No need to try to "out ferret" me, darlin. I'm quite aware of
both. I've owned them for 12 years and you haven't. I also have a
few european friends with ferrets. What they call ferrets there
are different from ferrets over here. What you say about
"european ferrets" is true but so am I about my side of the pond.

Through crossbreeding, etc, what we have here in the usa are
similar but different. For a long time, the USA considered the
skunk (aka polecat here) as the same but recent years realized
that they are not so related at all.

Anyway...read this and update your info. :)

To argue "UK ferrets" vs "USA ferrets" is basically apples and
oranges.

The thing is, Sheldon limits his experience to kosher delis in Brooklyn.
We all know there are reasons why they wouldn't have served meat with
cheese. That limits his imagination and his experience.

Personally, one of the best things I've ever tasted was a corned beef
and swiss sandwich. It was at a sub shop somewhere in Memphis that
offered some nice hot sandwiches with a cup of soup.

I've made this many times myself. Not on rye bread but on a buttered,
lightly toasted crusty "french roll". Toasted under the oven broiler.
Delicious! And not at all kosher. Nor from Brooklyn. LOL

Thinly sliced corned beef on a toasty roll with melted swiss cheese is
delicious. Other folks add some sort of spread/sauce and perhaps
saurkraut and hey... might call it a reuben! Heh.

The canned corned beef in the trapezoidal can that we consumed back in the day is different now. These days it's some kind of mushy, slushy, pasty, material. The Palm & Ox brand is quite similar to the product back in the 60's. Palm brand corned beef is pretty much what it should have been all the time. All the canned stuff has more grease than in the old days.

Just to make it clear, I'm not saying that what you say isn't true - just that people don't think about where they choose to live in that way. My guess is that one day the shit is going to hit the fan i.e., the lava flows will destroy the city of Hilo - if a tsunami or hurricane doesn't get to it first. Back in the 1950s my father was working at AVRO and their facility as on
the edge of Malton Airport (now Pearson International). One of his good
friends was a coworker, an English guy. The guy bought a house about 5
km southwest of the airport. One day when we were visiting the guy was
complaining about the sound from the planes flying overhead. Dad asked
him what he expected when he bought a house so close to the airport.

Dad had been an airforce bomber pilot and was well aware that large
planes made a lot of noise. Planes are much quieter now than they used
to be.

The Hawaiians view the volcano as a living being which demands respect from the natives. You're not going to get much complaining if Pele blows her top and sends people fleeing from their houses. There are numerous stories of Pele taking human form and interacting with humans. These tales are pretty creepy but I suppose that's the way it is with all people that are in close contact with nature are at the mercy of their environment.

Those things used to be pretty popular around 20 years ago. I've had a couple of them. After a while you get sick of them and throw them away. Then after that, they seem like a pretty good idea, so you buy another one. But then you get sick of that one too.

What your husband proposes might be a very good idea - especially if you happen to have one of those grills at the time. Good show!

That's funny. At first, my divorce was a most horrendous tragedy
