More of the home made pastrami, this time as warmed slabs on
biscuits with egg and swiss cheese.

Bunmmer. Apparently the 1.75 bottles don't come with that "Cork
Experience" that the 1L and 750's do. It's got the cheap plastic
pourer insert (which has just been ripped off).

It has been years since I saw a printed phone book in CT and none in FL.
They mostly went into the trash or recycle bin anyway. Internet
pretty much eliminated the need for them.

The phone company used to distribute phone books every year. They
stopped doing that years ago. Since then we have been getting two or
more smaller versions that other companies are publishing on their own
as a promotional deal. My wife keeps one and we throw the others right
into the recycling bin.

We don't get any phone books anymore. About 15 years ago the
recycle trucks set up in the supermarket parking lots for 2-3 weeks
after new book distribution disappeared. Then we only got 3rd party
"yellow pages" for a few years. The last 8-10 years, none.

I didn't expect this to turn into a phone book discussion. I
thought we were all over that by now. But here it is <shrug> :-)

Nobody's even named the movie.

Stevers, I'd like to learn how you always cook sunny-side-up eggs
without overcooking the yolks. Or are they overcooked?

I always cook fried eggs over-easy to preserve the runny yolks.

For Verizon landline customers, they send a Yellow Pages book each year
but no longer a White Pages. You can request one though and they will
send one at no charge. I'll bet that's a pretty thin book these days
since almost everyone has switched to cell

Upstate NY still gets phone directories, by County, some Counties get
the white and yellow pages in one book... that's what we get here in
Greene County, we get one small directory, white pages is 58 pages,
yellow pages is 133 pages. Both are thin and pages are smaller, the
size of a pocket book. Yellow pages has more pages because most
businesses take an ad, some a full page ad.

NYC gets directories by Borough and you'd need a fork lift to move
them... they're rather thick, they're mostly used as booster seats for
toddlers to sit on when they graduate from highchairs to eat at the
table.

My wife has been a substitute teacher for 13 years now, she mostly
teaches High School and is amazed at how the young people are
progressively becoming dumber and dumber... they can no longer read,
write and do math without a calculator... many can no longer speak in
any language, she tells me that they just make unintelligible grunting
sounds like wild animals.

Lung Guyland gets directories for each county, two for Nassau County
and two for Suffolk County... yellow and white pages are seperate
directories and each rather thick.

They do it for the advertising revenues. They are published and
distributed by promotion companies. They sell advertising to companies
with a spiel about how they are distributed to every household in the
region and how everyone uses their phone books. Every recipient might
check to make sure they are in there and with the right number, but I
wonder who many people actually use phone books these days. I have a
lot of numbers programmed into my cordless phone and my cell phone. If
I am looking for any other number or for a business I check online.

I saw the worst ever phone book delivery a couple years ago. It appeared
that someone had driven along tossing them out onto the road in front of
houses and they all seemed to have slid to a stop in the road. Most of
them appeared to have been run over.

They still deliver them here, but no white pages in some major metro
areas. Almost everywhere still gets yellow pages. The reason for that
is that they still make money selling ads and listings in the yellow
pages.

I've been burned from contractors found on the internet. I've resolved
to not hiring a business unless they have a presence in the yellow
pages. Only real, licensed businesses pay for an ad in the yellow pages.

I still use a phone book at least a few times per month. It's sometimes
it's faster to flip the book open rather than wait for the computer to
boot. Some localities don't have white pages available on-line.
However, white pages are only land line numbers.

Yellow page companies still make money on selling advertising, so it's
worth it to them to distribute their books. I get two books per year,
one has a small white page section. I use them a few times per month,
and otherwise, the old ones are recycled.

I cook them over-easy as well. It doesn't present well, but it's easier.

I've done them the way that Steve does with a low flame, and keep the
pan covered the whole time they cook; the steam cooks the tops and makes
the yolks up nice like that. Clear glass lid helps.

The last time I went to a movie was about 12 years the second last would
have been about twice that long ago, so two movies in 20 years. I have a
big screen TV with nice sound and don't have to drive out to the theater
and spend a lot of money on admission. I don't have to get there early
to make sure I make it for the start and I don't have to listen to
people in the audience talking and making stupid comments.

Those sales guys for the yellow pages would promise me the moon about how great the pages were for increasing business every year but I never saw a return. During my last years, I didn't bother with them. I could see that the websites were going to be the future, not some printed books. I hated those relics of the past.
I got some pretty good listing position on web searches. OTOH, being the first listing on the first page wasn't that effective either. I don't why that is.

Stupid comedy has gone downhill lately (while acting abilities have
gone up), I'll give you that.

But this was a classic. You know George Clooney got his start in
the "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes", right? (whatever happened to

Yes. "Word of mouth" is the best advertising.
It's free advertising for the company plus the prospective customers get
to know about the company other than a flashy ad in the yellow pages or
commercials...

That's what I did with my company and it worked well.
Many customers never even asked for a price as they had been told by a
friend that I was fair with prices and did good work.

He was good in "Pennies From Heaven", but that's about it for me...

I never "got" Will Ferrell, either. His kind of schtickle might be okay for free
on SNL, but otherwise...

I could never abide Charlie Chaplin, but that *does* date me a bit, lol...

I liked Steve Martin more in stand up than in his movie roles. I saw
Jim Carey very early in his career. He was performing at a comedy venue
in Niagara Falls and he was very good. However, I did not appreciate his
early movie roles. One comedian I could not tolerate was Andy Kauffman.
I don't know whatever convinced me that I should watch Man on the Moon
with Carey playing the part of Andy Kauffman, but he was great. He was
also great in The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Acting abilities may have increased but diction has decreased, markedly.
Too many actors and actresses get away with mumbling their lines. I
don't expect Julie Andrews clarity but it would be nice to know what
they are saying sometimes. And I am NOT deaf!

Due to a generally greater value placed on realism in film in the
last 50 years or so. Actors speak more like ordinary people.

If it's diction you want, you'll be watching a lot of Shakespeare.

I really have to wonder about the directing and editing of a lot of
movies. There seems to be a lot of scenes with important dialogue where
the lines are mumbled or drowned out by music and audio effects. If it
is important enough to be in the dialogue it should be intelligible.

It would help if some of the actors have stage experience. Some are just
pretty faces with little to no training.

It depends on the movies that you watch. There are an awful
lot of movies about the experiences of fairly ordinary people.

Hollywood wants pretty faces. Stage experience give us character actors.

Have you ever seen My Favorite Year? "I'm not an actor! I'm a movie star!"

Acting abilities have decreased on par with diction abilities. Your
punctuation sucks, that comma is superfluous, or you don't know the
definition of markedly. To be fair you should have used markedly for
characterizing both acting and diction. You should have saved that
comma for after sometimes. Actress is now passe, female actors are
now correctly refered to as actors... unless you are intentionally
disparaging females. I think female actors are better at their craft
than their male counterparts. I think females are far better at
expressing emotions than males. If you demand proper diction cease
associating with ethnicities other than your own. Your ability to
clearly express yourself in writing is atrocious.

True, word of mouth is good advertising. That's how I found my plumber
and roofer. Two jobs that I won't do: climbing on a steep slate roof
and routing the sewer. The latter, primarily, because I don't have the
equipment to do it. Tree roots and 120 year old terracotta pipes aren't
a good combination.

Businesses that I've flipped open the yellow pages to find are some
local parts stores, etc... but usually some odd job, such as
reupholstering a chair.

Even cheap 'ole me goes to see a show on the big screen every now and
again. There's a huge difference between seeing it on the big screen
and staring at a box in your living room (No, I don't have a doggone
wall-to-wall television; yes, however, it is a color screen). Nice to
get out of the house every now and again too.

A local Cinemark theatre used to offer a discount every Wednesday or
Thursday... I looked it up, it's now on Tuesdays. IIRC, $6-8 per person
to see the show. Not bad at all; cheap date night even if you add in
dinner. If I drive to Pittsburgh, they have a theatre with the big
comfy reclining seats.

Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't, My brother recommended a
roofer he had used and he needed a new roof so we went to his guy. The
company also did other things and we got him to do a ceiling repair. I
was not impressed with the ceiling work. The roof looked ok... until a
huge branch fell on the house and in we had it repaired thanks to
insurance. The insurance company used one of their preferred vendors.
When they stripped the shingles I saw that there was a hole in a part of
the roof that they were supposed to have replace the plywood.

OTOH there was guy who does a lot of work for a friend of my wife. He
was great. He did an excellent job and he worked cheap.

There is no gain from having different words for men and women in
a whole bunch of different jobs. I'm not a computer programmeress.
Why should a female actor be an actress?

There is some historical baggage that comes with those distinctions,
most notably pay and respect. It's time to dump them.

Linguistics are strange and often misunderstood by the masses. Back in
the 70s and 80s when we were inflicted with political correctness
feminists started lobbying to change. Miss or Mrs was changed to Ms om
order not to rank women by marital status, Positions with "man" had to
be changed. Most of those words never were intended to identify the
gender of the man who had the position. Man was person. Chairman denotes
the position, not the gender.

Thank goodness we don't have to deal with gender in English. In French
nouns are masculine or feminine, so adjectives have to be altered
accordingly. In the German there is masculine, feminine and neuter.

In Peter Gzowski's time as a radio host on CBC, it got plain, bloody
ridiculous.
I heard him say "craftpersonship" and "markspersonship".
Furthermore, one uberfeminist journalist wrote that she was
uncomfortable using the word "person" because of the last 3 letters.

True. Just like many sons that take over their father's business then
destroy it within a few years. I worked with one on my last job.

I often *jokingly* think about Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth.

I have to say that having recently binge watched Downton Abbey I have a
new understanding of the British class system. There is a very special
sense of entitlement going on there. People are born into a position of
rank and wealth, depending on their order of birth and gender. On the
flip side was the issue of loyalty and service. People were loyal to
the monarch and held them in great esteem.

It is an anachronism in this modern era, but it was a system that kept
England safe for centuries and helped them to establish an empire that
spanned the globe.

Things have changed. The Queen does not command the admiration of the
population the way her predecessors did. Most Canadians accept her as a
figurehead head of state, but really don't think much about it. If we
did away with the monarchy the biggest issue would be replacing her
image on our money.

There may still be enough people over there who support the monarchy. My
father's family was English and one of the most memorable days in his
life was the day he met the king. He had been invited to an investiture

That medal was one of his most prized possessions, especially the ribbon
