Yes, I love watching those tiny little birds and don't usually see them
in January. I first spotted it last Sunday. I immediately washed and
refilled the feeder with fresh sugar water. She's been a bit elusive
but today I was able to get some pics:

She appears to be the only one around so no fighting over the feeder.

We're supposed to get some Winter weather (temps dropping below freezing
overnight along with freezing rain). I'm happy to provide her with some
food to get her through this cold snap. :)

Nice little thing. I've never seen one around here. I'm more likely to
see sandhill cranes walk by.

Before I knew that we had over-wintering hummingbirds here, I took the

neighborhood chat group and we all were informed that we always have
winter guys. I'll set up a station next year that allows me to take
the feeded in at night.

I'm quite sure if you put out a hummingbird feeder you'd see one or a
few . :) They tend to migrate from here to further south, Florida and
even Cuba.

The egrets, cranes and herons tend to stick closer to the ponds but not
always. I got really irritated one day a few years ago because there
was a magnificent Great Blue Heron strolling around behind my house.

The neighbors, as they were prone to do, opened their back door and let
their really large dog out. Not leashed and the "fence" was a 2 ft.
decorative iron thing surrounding a patio. Sadly, no actual *yard* for
it to do its' business in and I never saw them walk that dog.

So, the dog spotted the heron, jumped that pitiful decorative fence and
charged at it. Fortunately the bird was able to take off. I thought it
was going to kill the bird.

That dog was always "getting out" and many times I saw people from that
house running around trying to corral it on the golf course. It may
have been a huge puppy that just wanted to play. <shrug> Fortunately,
they moved away. No more big dogs running loose to scare the water
birds if they decide to take a stroll out back. :)

Why wait until next year? Here, they're predicting 29°F tonight with
rain so yes, I'll bring the feeder in so the nectar doesn't turn to
slush. Hummingbirds don't feed at night so that won't be a problem.
I'll put it back out tomorrow morning. :)

Perhaps you could offer them some friendly advise about how there are
municipal laws about letting dogs run loose and that there are state and
federal laws about letting dogs chase wildlife and migratory birds.

Depends what you call winter weather. The hummers arrive here for my
birthday, mid May. This morning it was -2º, now a heat wave at 11º,
But the bluejays are here no matter how cold, they're here all winter,
even at -30º they attack our suet blocks. We found the best deal on
wild bird food is at the Tractor Supply Store. When we order $50
worth of anything they deliver for free... they've become my favorite
store... they sell the highest quality, especially tools. I buy
our water softener salt there, it's nice having those 40 lb bags
delivered. We use about 15 bags a year. They drop them off at our
garage door. For a while I was schleping them down to the basement,
now the neighbors son does it, well worth the $20 I give him. Takes
him 15 minutes to do what it took me 2 hours.

If there is enough sugar in the feeder it should not freeze. The colder
it is the more they will need it.

Did you miss the part where I said they moved out? I did try to talk
with them about the dog and was greeted at the door by the her and the
large dog, which was barking like crazy. I said politely, "Could you
please not let your dog run loose out back?" She mumbled something and
shut the door in my face. They moved out a few weeks later.

Nice pictures. You see more hummingbirds in a year than I've seen in my
life. I've never seen one perch.

I few years ago I was at a friend's place and we were in the garage for
some reason. A hummingbird buzzes in and perched on an extension cord
that was strung from the ceiling for something. We just sat there and
watched it for about 15 minutes because we knew we were unlikely to see
somethings like that again.

It's funny, some people think hummingbirds never sit down. Many gravity
type feeders don't have perches. I have a saucer type feeder with
perches all around the circumference. They'll hover and sip but just as
often will perch and sip. This one was hovering as it sipped then
flying a few feet away to perch on the branches of a bush at the back
corner of the house.

Thank you! I see some of the same birds although the species may not be
exactly the same this side of the pond. Goldfinches, for example. They
arrive in the late Spring and prefer thistle seed. :)

Odd. They're year-round residents up here. But the winter plumage of the
males looks like that of the year-round plumage of the females.

I looked up "European goldfinch". Interesting birds, but I think I prefer
the American goldfinch.
