I was going through so old video tapes of cooking shows that were popular
about 10 years ago, and found some called " We're Cooking Now" hosted by a
funny little guy named Franco Palumbo. The show said that he had been with
the CIA, Weight Watchers, and was also an author. As I recall, the shows
were produced in Florida, but he was from New England.

The shows are gone, and I can find any trace of him or his books. Anyone
heard of him ???

I remember that show. If I'm not mistaken, he committed suicide, oh...around
1990 or so. (give or take a year).

*** Uffdah.... The shows were still running in 1988, but something like
that would explain why they did not get recycled. Do you recall any of the
details or his reason ?? --

I was one of the faithful... can't remember much more than your
comments above, except that he had a restaurant on Cape Cod.

He certainly had a way of simplifying things... and I remember he
hated carob passionately. Said it came from his Weight Watcher
days, when he was "required" to substitute carob for chocolate.
Also recall his periodic comments about "Florida sugar" when it
clumped and refused to pour.

Have you asked at a bookstore about his books?

You've (roughly) described why the "banter" groups act as portals to
usenet. They use usenet groups as "rentacrowd" to attract paying
advertisers to the banter websites.

If I am reading this right, you are suggesting that they are legitimate
posters being directed here. I find that hard to believe because almost
every one of them uses that same format, introducing themselves as new
to, interested in cooking and looking forward to participating in our forum.

They are (other than the spammers who have found the banterwebsite,
just as they find usenet groups)

I find that hard to believe because almost
> every one of them uses that same format, introducing themselves as new
> to, interested in cooking and looking forward to participating in our forum.

That's how its members are told to introduce themselves. Unfortunately
they rarely find the thread again to pick up any replies. Membership is
free. The website earns income from advertising.Presumably usenet posts
count as websitepage hits so the advertisers think their advert is seen
by thousands.

Look for yourself. (quite safe)

http://www.foodbanter.com/general-cooking/

and if anyone doubts how profitable the (numerous) banter groups are,
take a look at their financial report (scroll down)

That would be the 'banter' forums...

I have no problem with people posting answers to a question like
"Whatever happened to?" If somebody is curious enough in the future
to google "Franco Palumbo," the answer will turn up next to the question.

I went to school with Chef Franco at the University of Massachusetts, we were both in the restaurant and hotel program and members of Alpha Tau Gamma fraternity.
Franco was a very talented chef, with an incredable sense of humor. He had come to Umass after graduating from the CIA which at that time was still based on the campus of Yale university.
While at Umass he worked holidays at Mount Snow in Vermont and Martha's Vinyard during summer break. After collage he enroled in Weight Wachers and lost a lot of weight.
He was offered a job with Weight Wachers as their Executive Chef. I am not sure how many years he worked for them, but I believe that during that time he was on the TV show "whats my line" as
" The Chef who lost his pot".
He at some time, I think afer Weight Wachers had his TV show "Were Cooking Now". And opened a renowned restaurant in Provincetown Mass.
I had lost contact with Franco while he was working at Weight Wachers as I moved west to follow my culinary career.
I am proud to say that Chef Franco was a friend.

For the record, my friend Franco did NOT commit subside, he passed from complications due to AIDS. He did his cooking show for Orlando public TV , we're cooking now. Franco also owned a very successful restaurant in Provincetown, where he also resided. I miss
My friend and think about him often. Orlando public tv published and sold a cookbook that Franco compiled for them called "from soup to nuts ". If anyone has a copy and would scan it and send it to me I would be ever so grateful. Please send me a copy. I lost my copy over the year and with moves.

I knew Franco since I was 8 years old and worked in his restaurant in P-town during the summers of 88 and 89. I also rented a room in the bottom portion of his home while I worked for him He was an awesome person. I was thinking about his cooking show and was seeing if I could order tapes so I googled him and came to your post. Love to hear from you.

Hello and yes I remember Chef Franco, I still have the sheet of his recipes and use them, they are great and now with WW being more flexible these are worth another look. Why is it the really talented seem to die young he was amazing. I was hoping to find more of his work but it seems that no one saved them or some other reason they are lost.

I remember Franco. I loved that show. I bought his cooking recipe cards and over the years and several moves, I've lost them. I would love to get a new/old set. I'm sad that he committed Suicide. Didn't realize he was struggling. We don't do justice in this country to help people with mental illness. Once he started a towel on fire (too close to the flame) and called it "towel flambe". He cut an "eggplant" in half and there was an egg inside of it. Great fun and good recipes.

As a kid in the 80's appreciating cooking because of my Italian Grandparents, when I first saw We're cooking now I was hooked. We're Cooking Now was probably the first cooking show that I really watched. My Mom would take down occasional recipes, and my brothers and I always enjoyed watching him. He was funny, personable and as a 10 year old kid I learned from him and really fell in love with cooking. We went to Disney World in February of 1986 and I was almost as excited that I was going to the place where the show was taped, unfortunately they weren't shooting then.

Its disappointing that there is so little about him on the internet. No clips of old shows on You Tube and I can't find any books or recipes. He deserves better, and his shows would be great to see again and introduce to a new generation.

I disagree, as I watch Putin - he always reminds me of what life was
like for the Spanish in that era. When my father died and I went
over to sell the house etc. I was chilled when the Guardia Civilia
suddenly arrived at the door and queried what right I felt I had to
sell the property etc etc. Later that evening, one of them returned
in mufti and consoled me and said not to worry, he was going to smooth
the path. It seemed my father was always giving him foreign stamps
which he appreciated and he had spent time with my parents just
sitting chatting and he knew we were no threat whatsoever. Just the
same, it was clear indication of how it could be if you had to live
with a dictator like Franco.

communism ?

I think the term you are looking for is one of these: dictator, despot,
autocrat, tyrant.

Communism is an economic system. One that must be enforced at
gunpoint, since it runs counter to human nature. Oh, it works small-scale
and when you can get the participants to do so voluntarily. As in
the monastic life.

Despots are depots and history as shown us time and again that when the
population rises up and overthrows a regime the new regime is usually
every bit as oppressive as the one it overthrew. The Russians can hardly
be faulted for revolting against the tsar. The comunists were not the
only faction that fought against them. They were more organized and
were able to take control. The same happened in Cuba where Batista's
corrupt and oppressive regime was fighting a number of enemies, but it
was the communists who ended up with the most support. The Chinese
rebelled against corrupt and oppressive government. In all three cases,
the new regime was as repressive as the old. It even happened in the
US. The victorious Patriots harassed the Tories so much that 10% of
the population left the newly formed country to settle in other British
territories.
