True, except John Kuthe isn't talking about working in a nursing home.
He's talking about being a nurse in someone's home. Taking care of a
sick child. Most of us know how that track record has worked out so
far. He published all the information himself.

My wife is involved with a retired teachers organization. We got a phone
all in the middle of our Easter dinner and did not bother to answer. It
turned out to be one of her old ladies. Megatron tried to call her back
but there was never an answer. We started to worry because the woman
lives in a retirement home where there has been 12 Covid19 deaths. That
was a real guilt trip, but she finally got through to her today. The
woman doesn't remember why she called.

The worst situation is probably Residence Herron in Quebec where 31 of
150 residents have died and the staff had abandoned the residence. There
is now a criminal investigation over that one.

Skydiving Accident Ruled Death By Coronavirus
April 16th, 2020

LAKE ELSINORE, CA—Local man Brett Garfield was tragically killed in a
skydiving accident yesterday. His death was quickly ruled death by
coronavirus by medical experts. Garfield wasn't tested for coronavirus,
but he exhibited many of the symptoms, such as suffering and dying, so
he was immediately added to the rapidly growing coronavirus death
statistics.

"Brett's 42-year-long life was tragically cut short yesterday,
presumably by coronavirus, as he plummetted into the ground at a high
rate of speed," said a Riverside County health official. "Darn you,
coronavirus! How many more will you take from us? HOW MANY MORE!?!?"

As Garfield's body was scraped off the ground with a giant medical
spatula, which is how they take care of these things, a coroner stood by
and took notes on his clipboard. "Yep, looks like coronavirus to me. If
he'd only socially distanced himself from the ground or worn a mask,
he'd have been OK. Add him to the numbers, boys."

"I guess you could say he" -- at this point, he put his sunglass on for
dramatic effect -- "didn't understand the gravity of the situation."

The coroner spent the rest of the day ruling the death of a bus crash
victim, a man hit by a freight train, and a guy crushed by a vending
machine as coronavirus fatalities.

HALF OF CORONAVIRUS DEATHS HAPPEN IN CARE HOMES, DATA FROM EU
SUGGESTS

Figures from Italy, Spain, France, Ireland and Belgium suggest UK may
be underestimating care sector deaths

---

About half of all Covid-19 deaths appear to be happening in care homes
in some European countries, according to early figures gathered by
UK-based academics who are warning that the same effort must be put
into fighting the virus in care homes as in the NHS.

Snapshot data from varying official sources shows that in Italy, Spain,
France, Ireland and Belgium between 42% and 57% of deaths from the
virus have been happening in homes, according to the report by
academics based at the London School of Economics (LSE).

Published official data for care homes in England and Wales are
believed to significantly underestimate deaths in the sector, with the
Office for National Statistics only recording 20 coronavirus-related
deaths in all care homes in the week ending 27 March. New figures are
due out on Tuesday, but are unlikely to be up to date.

<snip article>

I guess they don't test many of these people before or after they die,
so they don't count as corona deaths. According to this site, the UK
performs 6152 tests per 1 million capita and Germany performs 20269.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries

I read on CNN that the Johnson government didn't want to join forces
with the EU to organise more testing equipment, because they wanted to
show off their new-found independence after Brexit. Their reaction to
the suggestion to work together on this was "hostile".

Germany is really handling this pandemic well. And so is Australia. In time
Europeans will be poring over what they are doing so right.

Asian culture and their authoritarian governments don't really provide a role
model because their norms are hard for Europe to adopt.

One headline says, "UK missed three chances to join EU scheme to bulk-buy
PPE".

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/13/uk-missed-three-chances-to-
join-eu-scheme-to-bulk-buy-ppe

Britain missed three opportunities to be part of an EU scheme to
bulk-buy masks, gowns and gloves and has been absent from key talks
about future purchases, as pressure grows on
ministers to protect NHS medics and care workers on the coronavirus
frontline.

European doctors and nurses are preparing to receive the first of
Euro1.5bn worth of personal protective equipment (PPE) within
days or a maximum of two weeks through a joint procurement scheme
involving 25 countries and eight companies, according to internal EU
documents.

The EU's swift work has led to offers of medical equipment, including
masks, overalls and goggles, in excess of the number requested, a
spokesman for the European commission said. The EU is separately
establishing stockpiles within member states, with the first being set
up in Romania.

The development comes as anger grows over PPE shortages in Britain,
with particular concerns at the weekend over stocks of full-sleeve
gowns running out.

Etc.

The son of a friend of mine is in military enforced lockdown in Jordan.
There was a total curfew. He could not go out to get food or even to
take his dog out to pee. One of his neighbours stepped outside and was
promptly arrested.

I'm not sure if Australia isn't just lucky or if there's something
seasonal going on after all. When I look at how poorly this government
handled the bushfire crisis, it's hard to believe they got it right
this time. I mean, what's the point of social distancing and lockdown
if you're keeping your schools open? Kids will be walking around like
little corona bombs.

I expect that sort of nonsense in India but not America. Perhaps this is
nature's way of culling those too stupid to survive.

Read the article; Britain "missed out" because it wasn't
invited/informed by EU, so knew nothing about the EU procurement.

Furthermore

"The EU procurement scheme has not been entirely successful, however.
While deliveries of masks, gowns and gloves will be made in tranches
over the next two to 18 weeks, the procurement of ventilators will be
slow, according to a leaked EU document.

?Companies indicated long delivery times, from 10 to 52 weeks,? the (EU)
commission warned member states of the £690m purchase."

Shortages of PPE exist in Britain, many EU states and the USA.

I would think the UK is big enough to develop a bulk-buy program all on
its own. Less bureaucracy to boot.

There were recent reports here about mismanagement of the National
Emergency Stockpile System (NESS) and its disposal of tons and tons of
N95 masks, gowns and other PPE last year. Apparently the stuff has a 5
year shelf life, so they hired a contractor to haul it to the dump and
did not replace it and the facility was shut down.

I suppose that in a better organized world the materials would have been
stockpiled for a few years and could then be redistributed to hospitals
to be used up before they expired and new equipment could be purchased
to replace it.

The situation is sort of like having a fire and not having an
extinguisher. Then you go out and get an extinguisher. You don't bother
checking it regularly and all the gas escapes so the extinguisher is no
longer of use. After a couple years of having a dead extinguisher you
throw it out without replacing it. Then you have another fire.

In the 1960's, right after Martin Luther King was assassinated,
Washington D.C. went nuts. Mostly black population and so
many rioted, burning buildings, looting, etc.

I lived in the suburbs then only about 10 miles or so
from city limits. We walked down to the Potomac River one
day and looked towards the city. Dozens of columns of
smoke rising up in the air. It was total chaos.

I remember on the evening news they said this:
"Curfew in Washington D.C. Anyone seen out after dark
will be shot on sight."

Yes, they really did say that. It was *that* bad.
I was there.

When journalists spotted what had happened, the British government argued
they lost the email from the EU. When the same journalists pointed out
the invitation to join the tender had also been made publicly, the
government kept quiet in its sheepish way.

Long delivery times are far better than no delivery times, which is what
the UK ended up with.

When the UK response to the pandemic comes to be reviewed, the British
refusal to join the EU joint sourcing arrangement will go down as a
serious political mistake driven by a pig-headed need to demonstrate the
UK didn't need the EU.

Perhaps this instinctive hostility to the EU reflects Boris's own attitude or
perhaps it reflects that of the culled cabinet but it's far better not to
display such overbearing arrogance and save lives instead.

As it turns out, the UK is now on target to experience one of the worst
outcomes from Covid in Europe, according to one official government
advisor. You couldn't make it up.

Not that America's response to Covid by Trump is faring much better.

It didn't turn out like that. A joint EU tender has huge purchasing power
equivalent to the US.

The UK has been reduced to asking fashion houses to manufacture PPE and it
scrambled to design new ventilators for domestic manufacture which turned
out to be harder and slower than thought.

Britian, like America, is starting to realise isolationism is not always
the best strategy despite its superficial attractions.

Isolationism refers to more than you staying at home. The world does not
revolve around your activities and nothing else.

Isolationism leads to a lack of ready access to external resources. In
this case it has also lead to lack of participation (thanks Donald) in
international disease prevention programs and to the refusal of an
international Covid test. It's shortly (thanks again Donald) going to
lead to a lack of participation in the work of the WHO.

How very true. In fact, for all his promises and bluster, Johnson knows
the value of the EU to the UK and he may well choose to moderate how
Brexit turns out.

We have to wait and see what other conflicts pressure him to do, such as
small but noisy groups demanding an extreme Brexit.

It is not isolation. It is a sudden huge demand. Need glives? I can
get them for you by the container and delivery right now is 8 months.
The capacity just is not there. Situation that did not need PPE
