I was going to head over to Costco tomorrow, among
other things I need Foodsaver bags. Today the mail
brought the October Costco coupons and what do I see
but $5 off the bags.

Just a heads up if anyone out there is interested.

Check these prices against Costco. I do not know which ones are
cheaper or if you even like the rolls. But worth checking.

Thanks very much. I have bought from them before.

I like preformed bags, but I don't think they make them in
the size configuration I want. So, I use the rolls. I do not
know what the rolls cost at Costco, but Costco online gives you
6 rolls (4 11inch, 2 8inch) for $40. Even if you tossed out the 8inch
rolls, you still come out even since you don't pay for shipping.
With the $5 off, it's a better deal at Costco.

(no, I won't throw out the 8inch rolls, but 2 of them will be a long
time supply for me, I don't use them much)

Come to think of it, I need some food saver bags, but it will cost me at
least $5 to get to the nearest Costco and then I will have to pay for a
membership.

FORTY $$$... and you still gotta rewrap yourself?!?!?

Someone please explain to me how this is not insanity... it's
definitely obssessive-compulsive behaviour.

Btw, most meat departments will freezer wrap meat for free, just ask,
my ordinary chain stupidmarket will... usually have to wait 10-15
minutes... just continue shopping. Even my small town market freezer
wraps for free... yesterday, Tuesday is senior day for over 65, they
give a 5pct discount on the entire bill at the register. Most seniors
also like the savings of family packs so the meat department will
freezer wrap for free, even individual pork chops from a family pack
of twelve... I take advantage of that service often, I ask for my
chops in packages of three and no problem, they do a very nice job,
even label and date too.

Yesterday I didn't take advantage of the free freezer wrap, but I
bought a lovely roast for tonight's dinner, never use previously
frozen for oven roast:

Yup, and keep your mitts off my foodsaver. That's a couple
years worth of bags for me, and I have no complaints.

Nice looking roast. Looks like the kind I saw made into
garlic roast beef. I never make roast beef.

The stores in California (Bay Area) closed about 2 months ago. Deals
weren't that great (10-20% off) until the last few days when the discount
increased. There wasn't much left when the discounts reached 50-70% off.

It's curtains.for Linens 'n Things

October 8, 2008

"Linens 'n Things, conceding defeat in a multiyear turnaround effort, asked
a Delaware judge for permission to quickly liquidate its stores.

Confirming exclusive reports by The Post - including a Sept. 17 story that
said Linens 'n Things may take liquidation bids as soon as mid-October - the
struggling housewares chain proposed to auction its stores on Oct. 14 and
begin going-out-of-business sales two days later.

The Clifton, NJ retailer, taken private for $1.3 billion in 2006 by
billionaire Leon Black's Apollo Management, had told employees in recent
weeks that it still might find a buyer to save it from liquidation.
Immediately following The Post's Sept. 17 report, Chief Restructuring
Officer Michael Gries in an internal memo complained of "rumors and
misinformation in the media."

Yesterday, however, Gries admitted to Delaware Bankruptcy Judge Christopher
Sontchi that Linens 'n Things won't survive the holidays. He said the
retailer aims to start liquidating as soon as possible.

Linens 'n Things' hopes faded last month after Cerberus Capital Management
abandoned a plan to downsize the chain.

Lord & Taylor owner NRDC and Toronto private-equity firm Hilco Consumer
Capital are circling Linens 'n Things' profitable chain of 37 stores in
Canada. Yesterday, Gries told the judge two suitors are still deciding
whether to make bids for parts of the chain..."

My local store here in Chicawgo has pretty much been a shambles the last
coupla years, stuff stacked all higgedly - piggedly, etc. I have about
$15.00 on a gift card but that was voided out when they declared bankruptcy,
oh well.

There is still a nice Bed Bath & Beyond down the pike, so there's still
shopping opportunities for housewares...

Actually my fave housewares store was Lechter's, which closed a few years
back...they had a great selection of stuff at good prices but their local
store here was always virtually empty. I guess that was why it was so nice
and clean and well - stocked, lol...

Borders is another chain to watch, they are in trouble and this latest
economic crap may finally push them over the edge...

There are LOTS of great sales out there, e.g. all rugs and floor coverings
at World Market (formerly Cost Plus) at 50% off this week, blinds and window
stuff soon to be 50% off, good bargains. But lotsa folks simply don't have
the money to buy even the bargains these daze...

If they liquidate in your area, don't rush down to find bargains. The
store nearest us closed about a month ago. The company from Texas they
brought in to actually carry out the sale was a joke. They reduced
everything a measly 10% and wouldn't let you use the usual 20% off store
coupons they'd been flooding our mail with for years, so things actually
cost more than before the sale.

I went in after the "liquidation" had been going on for over a month and
found that I could still get many items cheaper at Bed, Bath & Beyond.

Caveat emptor!

It's a shame. I liked that store years ago, but when it went big,
the one near me wasn't all that great. The employees were
unpleasant if not hostile, there wasn't anyone to help you when
you needed them, I didn't like shopping there.

I wonder if Bed Bath will feel the need to send out those coupons
anymore.

They still do. I recently received both a 20%-off postcard, and a $5-off
coupon - the one in their ad.

Hmmm, now that you mention it I had not seen any LNT flyers littering the
mailbox area for a whiles...still lotsa BB&B flyers though.

Yup, and many housewares you can get cheaper online at Amazon or wherever...

Additionally, the ruling SCALLAWAGS here in Chicago have jacked up our sales
tax to 10.25% on all items (excepting food and drug items which are taxed at
1.00%), so that's something that has to be factored in, too...I buy a lot of
stuff online because it's tax - free and often free shipping. Many
Chicagoans will go to the suburbs or further to shop and so save on things,
especially the bigger - ticket items.

Heck, I even buy my stationery and gift wrap sorta stuff online now, check
out Dover Books, they have lovely things at LOW prices, neat l'il art book
kinds of things for stocking stuffers, posters, books, even Joan Crawford
paper dolls, lol:

I planned a dinner party once, with 6 guests, and we had a hugeific
ice storm so that nobody could come over - streets were like an ice
rink. I had been marinating the roast (rolled rib roast), so I just
plopped the whole thing in the freezer, marinade and all, and we had
it a couple weeks later. It was absolutely the best roast beef I've
ever had, bar none. (As I recall, the marinade was red-wine based
with the usual suspects added.)

So true! At one L-n-T store during the last few days when discounts were at
70%-off, I found a Henkels knife block with a few assorted knives (2
Henkels, 1 of some other much cheaper brand). The sales person told me that
they could not sell me just the Henkels knives. He wanted me to pay 70% off
the original $399 price of the knife-block and the full set of knives it was
supposed to have - of which all but two were missing! No deal!

Even without the tax it's cheaper for almost anything in the burbs.
We almost never grocery shop in the city and save lots by combining
our shopping with other trips. Gas, smokes and beer alone make it
worth a little planning to shop in the burbs.

We tried this place a week ago and will definitely be going back.

Bed, Bath, & Befuddled also has the FoodSaver rolls and with their
coupon they knock off 20% as has been pointed out. If you have a $5
off coupon, even better on a $19.99 double roll box. Also, Wal Mart
sells their own brand of these rolls but they are about 2 feet shorter
than FoodSaver, but still do a great job of sealing.

You can get Foodsaver bags pretty cheap on Ebay; they are generic
equivalents but they work well.

Do you mean the Jarden website? I have ordered through them
in the past, but I've gotten better deals on ebay. Also, I can't
wait until the end of the year, I didn't realize I was so close to
being out.

I am going to buy the 2 11inch roll pack from Bed Bath and Beyond
because that's the better deal with the 20% coupon. Costco has the
better deal if you use the 8inch bags, I don't really use them much.

Only problem with the FoodSaver website is by the time they add tax
plus shipping, it's not that great of a bargain. Usually you can find
as good as if not better deal locally. And as has been pointed out,
ebay is another good option, just watch the shipping charges.
