I want to thank everyone connected with the Orange Roughy thread for
knowing I've not been trying to be a hard-ass on those poor little fish
(that, incidentally, I haven't eaten in years). There are some places
where biases exist that would have had people all over my sharkly ass, so
I've taken pains to explain that I've just been trying to find a good
source for the call on whether something is or isn't considered
endangered, and I appreceate that y'all have taken my participation in the
thread in the spirit in which it was offered. I think that's exceptional,
sad as that may be, and you all deserve a hat tip. [hat tip]

I just had a nice bowl of orange roughy and corn chowder.
Mmmm . . . very good. My favorite fish. I'll be delighted
to eat the very last orange roughy taken from the ocean.

(I was always tickled by this variation on Sherman's refusal.
I don't know the source, though.)

I can't eat shark, fortunately for you. It comes back to bite my
innards. My mentor said it was probably a histamine reaction, not a
true allergy.

But I *was* thinking, erroneously, that remoras were eels. I've since

remora - attach themselves to their host and feed off of foodscraps and
feces, though some believe they also groom the host

pilot fish - have a facultative symbiotic relationship with larger fish;
swimming with larger fish provide protection while the pilot fish grooms the
fish of parasites and spinach stuck between their teeth

"chum" LOLOL, good one Blinky!

Hey I watched two shows on Discovery (I think) yesterday about the
giant squid. Anyway, one of the shows filmed an interestingly ugly
deep water shark - it was white and looked like it suffered from
neurofibromatosis (think: Elephant Man). Do you know what its common
name is?

Basking shark? Them're pretty damn ugly. There have been votes to kick
them out of the phylum.

Or perhaps more likely: frilled shark?

I thought Lumpy was deep salt water and Beaver was shallow fresh...
oh well, you know what they say: opposites attract.
