The pantry has gotten so bloated over the years that there are ancient canned
and boxed foods that have got to go.
The oldest, forgotten, hidden behind everything, first to go is a wholesale
box of "slim jims." Vintage: 1995!
Followed by all brands of canned soups...
Followed by years old fresh pastas...
Followed by a dozen cans of tomato pastes...
Followed by a few dozen packets of powdered gravy and taco seasoning and
lipton onion soup mix...
Followed by ancient Jolly green giant and Delmonte canned veggies...
Followed by a bottle of liquid smoke...

There's no reason to toss commercially canned stuff unless the cans
are compromized - leaking, bulging, dented, etc.

You're probably right, It had more to do with "I can't remember when I
bought that" mentality.
There was a post here from ages ago (I forget from who) about the
incredible exploding tomato paste that suck in my mind! I've eyed the cans
of tomato paste with suspicion ever since! :D
Altogether, I probably tossed $50+ worth of years old foods.
It brought me a little peace of mind, if nothing else.

I've tasted 10-year old cans of green beans and 6 year old coconut
milk. I wish I hadn't. Donate them to the food bank.

LOL! I had some things that qualified for social security in my
kitchen too... but my crown was stolen by someone on HGTV - one of
those house selling shows. They had a beautiful home, but the house
had to be whipped into shape to sell ("depersonalize and declutter") -
plus they were downsizing so they really had to pare away at mementos.
The wife was in the kitchen with a friend cleaning out the cupboards.
The friend picked up spices and herbs one by one saying "out of date"
and she'd counter with "it still has flavor". After they determined
that one item was 40 years old, her friend threw it in the garbage can
and she *fished it out*! You can see where this one is going.... in
the end they decided not to sell the house after all.

'It still has flavour' - DUST flavour maybe! lol I don't pay much
attention to dates on herbs and spices, but after about ten years
they're ready for the trashcan. (since I've been married five years,
my spice rack has another five years to go :P )
