I don't wanna join another NG just for this question, so I'm gonna ask
y'all...

I've got a beautiful oil-painted picture in my livingroom... a beautiful
autumn mountain/river/landscape scene... I love it... the beautiful colors
of yellow/red/orange leaves... just a tad of snow on the mountains and a
thin icy crust on sections of the river... but I'd like to ask a local
artist to add a moose to the scene.

Does anyone here know if Is this legal?

I'd look up the artist him/herself, but the signature is illegible.

Something about the question sounds like a put-on, but, taking it
at face value, if you own it, you can set it on fire if you want to.
So, I think you can add the moose. It would be legal. It may not
be smart, but it would be legal. Adding a unicorn would definitely
not be smart and should be illegal.

No "put-on"... no "BS"... I'm serious...

The keywords you said is "Should be legal"...

I was just thinking 'bout all the stuff 'ya hear about musicians suing other
musicians due to part of their original tune being played along with the new
song... rock/pop vs. rap

I just want to know if it's *legal* for me to have someone else alter
another man/womans painting.

I am saying that it is legal for you to add the moose.

The difference between you painting a picture you own and the musicians is
fundamental:

You are modifying something you already own for your own enjoyment -
perfectly legal.

If you modified the painting, and then tried to re-sell it as your own work,
that would be illegal.

Why would altering the painting be illegal? You do own it, right?

Yow! It's not illegal. It's your property now, so you can paint a
moose on it, set fire to it, use it for a kite...whatever you'd like
to do! :^D

If you love the painting, maybe you shouldn't push it too far...don't
want to "jump the shark" by "painting the moose"...

You definitely need too consult with Moosmeat.

Actually it would be pretty dumb to contract with someone for the purpose of
altering a prefectly good painting, especially one with which you are otherwise
quite pleased... why chance someone ruining your painting? GIANT DUH! Were it
me (it wouldn't be) I'd contract for an entire reproduction with the inclusion
of the moose. I don't think "legal" has a whit to do with it... it's yours,
you can legally wipe your butt with it if you so desire... it's strictly a
question regarding the capacity of your brain to cipher logic. Of course you
can always find a picture of a moose to adhere to your painting with a
temporary adhesive... then you can always change mooses and their positions...
I bet you can make your painting into a screen saver, with an animated moose.
Does a moose shit in the woods, is it legal?

Unless the painting police is due to bust in and check things out, i
wouldn't dream of worrying about it.

Certainly legal - you own the painting and could put ketchup on it if you
want. But you might want to have the original artist's signature blanked out
when the moose is added.
