RFC still active! Yes it's chaotic, has too much traffic to follow, and is
unmoderated (always a limitation in online fora). But it's still "the
granddaddy of everything" about food online (as the founder of a popular
food web site wrote). RFC is no longer the unique forum for Internet food
discussion that it was for its first dozen years (and first few thousand
regulars, and first few hundred thousand postings). New tools, new fora
appeared. New Internet users, to whom every forum was novel. (History?
You had to seek that out yourself. If interested.) One 1990s author in The
American Scholar balked at the phrase "Internet culture" (while expressing
no opinion, or awareness, of such proud traditions as netiquette, flaming,
and RFC cookware debates).
Still, 25 years is a milestone.
