It has always worked fine before; I just use the little client right in
the browser.
Then yesterday it returned that error, and I tried it a couple of times
an hour or two apart with the same result.
Then just now, the same.
Is it broken or something?

Try using a real IRC client. The server is fine.

Yeah, the links seem to be "broken".
If anyone wants to chat, Chatzilla works, as well as regular IRC
clients like Mirc.
The server is just fine.

Yeah, I'll bet. :)
I'm there. So are others. IRC client users.
Always willing to try good advice, I just installed mIRC and apparently
it successfully logs onto something or other, but I don't see
#rec.food.cooking.
Did you enter the command
/join #rec.food.cooking
?
Did you put the server as irc.penguinpowered.ca?
And port 6667?
And the channel as #rec.food.cooking?

or follow Christine's instructions in the other thread and come in via
the web interface.

Perhaps first use this command (?),
/server irc2.penguinpowered.ca
then join the channel
/join #rec.food.cooking
I dunno if
/port 6667 (or something like that)
has to be typed before those first two commands though.

IIRC, if he has to use the port number, I think he'd use it when he set up
the server: irc2.penguinpowered.ca:6667
I think.

Failed to Connect
"Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at
irc2.penguinpowered.ca.
Though the site seems valid, the browser was unable to establish a
connection."
FF sucks. Try mirc.
nb
Did! Sucked!
Andy
I'm trying to get in as well. I just downloaded mIRC, but I can't connect
to anything. I need someone to hold my hand, which is weird considering
that I'm a techie.

Kili...
read all the posts about the channel, server, etc
The server I use is irc1.penguinpowered.ca
The port is 6667.
The channel is #rec.food.cooking.
Christine
I'm off now, but these two line commands in this order did the job:
/server irc2.penguinpowered.ca
/join #rec.food.cooking
I just kept plugging them until they worked.
I just go to the rfc website and click the rfc chat like usual but it
DOESN'T FUCKIN' WORK!!!
Andy

Yeah well, I didn't change nothing.
Andy
That's why I mentioned "IRC client users". As versus trying to come in
the back door with a web browser.
People have to use a real IRC client.

Bullshit!!!!!!
Andy

Everybody knows! Chris already posted how to do an end run.
Paste this into your browser, hit enter
http://www.web-irc.org/
Where it says server, put: irc2.penguinpowered.ca and port 6667 for
the port.
Channel #rec.food.cooking. Don't forget the #!
Change your nick before you log in.
Are you a Google Grouper hugger, too? :)
All smileys aside, it is sad that you seem to have no idea just how tiresome
this is. You're sounding like a dried up old codger, mired in his prejudices
and determined to air them. Very unattractive. And really, really boring.
