My mother used to tell me that her mother used to line cake pans with
scented geranium leaves before adding the batter to the pan. The
leaves flavoured the cake.

Has anyone heard of this, and will it work with any plain cake recipe?
Also, are there certain scents which work better than others?

Yes, you can do that - I would use ginger, nutmeg, lemon or rose scented
geranium leaves. I have also used bee balm (melissa). Decorate with
flowers (rose petals, marigold, borage flowers OR if it really doesn't
look too good when the cake is de-panned, heat up any jar of jam, add a
splash of brandy or vodka or fancy stuff, stir around, cool down,
pour/spoon it on the cake (to cover up the leaves you pulled off).
