What about hot, as in black pepper, chili pepper, etc.?

That is tasted in the mouth.

I thought those are flavors; hence, "Your taste is all in your mouth" is a
cheap shot.

Well, my taste sure ain't in my closet.

I am too big a fan of MSG and the other umami vectors.

And I love the congressional nascar suit idea. It would be some
reseach and a little money and sewing, but we could make nice
suitcoats for some of our favorite rulers, make the delivery a media
event. Seriously, I if I can get my FaceBook working, I'll help make
this a thing. A lot of you are more savvy than me. If you are in ,
I'll carry as much wood as I can.

and, further OT - what is yahoo doing? I think I'm done with them.

Yes but not governed by taste receptors - it's a reaction by the nerve
endings to capsaicin which is an irritant.

Plus the hot of horseradish/wasabi/mustard.

Three distinctly different types of hot.

Plus the chemical in pimento/paprika is identified as hot by some not by
others. A variation on capciasin I suppose.

The sense of smell makes such a huge difference, as well. Our second
son had HUGE tonsils and adenoids and, aside from not being able to
breathe enough oxygen, basically didn't taste most things. After the
surgery, he was far more interested in different flavors than he had
been before and ate all sorts of things he'd never liked before. What
he noticed most before the surgery was the texture of food, which makes
sense if you aren't getting most of the flavor.
