What's NOT unique about The Doors is a harder question!

Their lead singer died of a drug OD before age 30. Oh, wait.... Never
mind.

Manzarek is playing a Fender Rhodes bass but they should have hired
another player. I saw them around 1971 and the band sounded really
sparse - as usual. Not my favorite band - they're too disconnected from
their audience. Their records are fine.

Truedat! I guess I'm just so used to that with The Doors that I didn't
even think about it!

My band, The Bonobos, never had a bass player either. I played bass
on one song--a simple bass line, since I'm not a real bassist.

Those Rhodes bass keyboards still show up used on ebay and craigslist
every once in a while. Apparently they weigh a ton which is part of the
reason no one wants to be bothered with them, but it would definitely
have a high cool factor to play one.

They probably are heavy but compared to the standard suitcase model 73,
they must have been ridiculously easy to move. I used to have an old
Rhodes that I couldn't give away. It ended up getting it's heavy ass
hauled to the dump. It was a great relief to get rid of that thing. I
can't imagine what the 88 key model must have weighed.

These days you can easily get the sound of a classic Rhodes on a
keyboard. The action however, would be pretty difficult to replicate.

Jim Morrison wanted to be a member of a very exclusive club. Amy
Winehouse is a member but Whitney Houston can't be. :-)

That disconnected feeling is fairly common among bands whose lead singers
are dead.

Just sayin'.

;-)

The post-Morrison Doors persisted, unfortunately.

Manzarek should have moved on. He would have been an awesome ballpark
organist back in the day. Still just sayin'.

MartyB
Who would take a B3 with Leslie over an electronic keyboard any day

Yeah, well, there is that, too. I don't know how everyone carted around
these huge base cabinets, either. My Ten2, plus the -EX extension
speaker, is as big as I go.

Just, there's still nothing quite like the real deal - which reminds me
that I need to get back to restoring that Hammond organ in my family
room....

I agree he would have been awesome. The Doors without Jim? Yeah, you're
right.

I used to carry an 88 around. We referred to it as Deadman. Lighter than a
B3 though.

The appeal of vintage instruments is strong. Most of my guitars are
pre-seventies or copies of pre-seventies instruments.

The sound of the Rhodes and the B3s pretty much defined 60s and 70s rock
and fusion music.

B3s are no problem because you'd hire some goons to move it for you. :-)

I'm not familiar with the Latter Dead Saints but I think that I can take
your word for it. :-)

When we played gigs, we *were* the goons! B3, 2 Leslie cab, and Deadman. I
suppose I was considered high maintenance by the horn section. ;-)

OK, I thought I was starting to kinda like you, but now I totally
resent your ass because you had a fucking horn SECTION :) WANT!
