...On The Food Network In 2010

1. Annoying family members
Enough is enough, Food Network. I'm watching your channel to pick up some
new culinary tips. not to watch John Cusimano clumsily following Rachael Ray
around a souvenir shop in Hawaii. Here's a general rule of thumb: if the
family members aren't adding anything of value to the program (I'm looking
at you too, Michael Groover), then get 'em the hell off my television.

2. The same repeats, over and over and over
Just because I missed Sunday's episode of Barefoot Contessa doesn't mean I
need to see it Monday at 4, Tuesday at 2, Wednesday at 6, and Friday at
noon. Why not mix things up a bit? Play a fun episode from last year
instead. LET LOOSE. GET CRAAAAZY.

3. Dirty fingernails
Is it really brain surgery, chefs? You're cooking on television. Frequent
close-ups of your hands are a virtual necessity. I think I speak on behalf
of America when I say no one really needs to see the residual dirt under
your fingernails from your brief stint in the garden yesterday.

4. Sunglasses on the back of Guy Fieri's head
Better yet, just ban him from wearing sunglasses altogether. Let the bitch
squint. I don't care. Television - and humanity as a whole - will be much
better off.

5. Constant reminders that food smells good
You can't watch the Food Network for 5 minutes without hearing some schmuck
carrying on about how good their simmering garlic smells. "Ooooh, this
smells SOOOO good. Mmmmm!" Guess what? It's garlic. It's cooking in olive
oil. No shit it smells good. I don't need to see you borderline orgasming
over the odor to clue me in to that fact. Come up with another way to get me
excited about your stupid chicken dish.

6. Food Network Challenges
No one likes this boring show, so why does Food Network insist on airing it
at least 5 times a day? It's simply awful. If you've seen one episode, you've
seen 'em all. You can only watch Buddy Valastro trying to animate a Santa
Claus for so long before you actually start feeling your brain cells dying.
Oh, and spoiler alert: Bronwen Weber wins.

7. Paula Deen overdosing on Y'ALL
Paula Deen clearly excels as some things, like cooking with butter, avoiding
encounters with dog poo in her home, and slipping the word Y'ALL into a
conversation as much as humanly possible. Here's a typical Paula Deen
sentence: "Hey y'all, today on Paula's Best Dishes y'all, we're cookin FISH
Y'ALL. And y'all. (pause to lick something off fingers). y'all just ain't
gonna believe how easy it is, y'all." Um, okay. We get it. You live in
Georgia. We don't need to be reminded of that 25 times every minute, so here's
what I'm proposing: the Food Network needs to set and enforce a strict limit
of no more than 5 Y'ALLs per episode. Less is more, Paula. Less is more.

8. The Neely's constantly asking each other for "brown sugar"
.and then giggling about it to the camera for 15 seconds. That term was
funny once. In 1992. But now it's just annoying.

9. People talking with their mouths full
Get some freakin' class. Were you raised by a pack of wolves? Frankly, all
of the Food Network full mouth talkers are disgusting. but none of them more
so than Guy Fieri. He's the worst. Few things on television disgust me more
than his behavior on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Every time he takes a
bite of food, the cameras zoom in on his greasy face and he starts talking -
mouth full, of course - about how juicy and "on point" it is. You know, I
was intrigued by the food until I saw what it looked like splattered on the
camera lens after your SALIVA STARTED BREAKING IT DOWN, you disgusting pig.

10. Ina Garten's same 3 gay friends
For Christ's sake, Ina. Do the world a favor. Go to a gay pride parade. Pick
up some interesting new gays. Because if I have to watch Michael arranging
hydrangeas one more time, I'll lose my mind.

PS. These arent my words, rather those on a website I found to be humorous.
I actually like Guy Fieri alot.

I enjoy a little bit of it. It makes them seem more human.

I don't really know how the scheduling works, but I do know that FN
sells their shows to cable and satellite companies. Especially on
satellites, repeats are necessary. In the US, just considering East
coast and West coast, that's a three hour time difference. The East
coast people don't want to see a show at midnight, but 6PM is too early
for many West coast people.

I agree. But I'm sure they aren't "practical", they are a fashion
statement.

At first I thought she just had an accent. Then people on here from the
South said it was no accent they've ever heard. After listening more
closely, now it really grates on me. I have no idea if it's faked or
not, but it just keeps sounding more and more contrived.

I don't even know what you're talking about, fortunately. I think I may
have watched a few minutes of their show, by accident, once.

When she first appeared, her accent wasn't so overbearing and
she sure didn't say Y'All every. third. word. I like Paula, but she's
gone overboard with that accent.

I just turned off Giada a while ago because she started talking
with her mouth full. People, you're wearing a mic. Please. It's
probably okay in person but on tv, it's kind of nauseating.

I haven't seen them ask for "brown" sugar, but they do ask for sugar
and get giggly. OK, I get it... move on. We're not in elementary
school anymore.

To their credit, they have two stoves and they use both. I like that.

I think she's going overboard in the other direction now because for a
long time she didn't allow herself to be photographed chewing and
swallowing.

In a manner of speaking they are adding value. If he did not appear in the
show, his portion of the trip would be taxable income instead of a
deductible expense. I did see one of her vacation shows. They get much
higher ratings on the cleavage scale. I thought them things were going to
fall out.

Yes, the family members must earn a living too. It happens on all of the
shows.

I have not seen dirty nails on TV, but it would be gross.

She was a bit of a normal person at first, but now she had to take the
southern gal image too far. She is trying to be the cute southern belle,
and it does not fit for her age.

Depends on the show. I've seen Anne Burrell taste a dish in progress and
say, "This needs more salt", and then adjust it. Problem is, she uses WAY
more salt than I could tolerate.

I can't watch the program about diners. Nobody wears gloves. They
aren't cooking for themselves, friends, or family. They are handing it
to customers, and they are handling bread, buns, toppings, etc, all
barehanded. Grosses me out.

I've been serving food for 20 years now, and we required to use tongs,
spoons, or gloves when handling anything that will not be cooked
further.

Maybe the rules are different in all those places, but here, the
health department would shut all of those places down.

Last year, I went to an event that bragged for months that they would
have a great fish and chip vendor there. Not only did they run out of
food the the first day at 11am, but the second day, at 10:30 am, I
watched the lady scoop up the french fries with her bare hands, place
the fish pieces in with her bare hands, scoop ice into a cup (with her
hand helping), take money from a customer, then scoop more fries with
her bare hands. Didn't even wipe her hands, let alone wash them. I got
out of line and left. They ran out of food again by 11am, and the show
committee had to go to Subway to buy lunch for the judges. Somebody
else said she saw the lady's ponytail land in the food. It was pretty
disgusting. It was actually a good thing that they ran out, as that
forced most people to go buy better food.

That was the only show where I did not take my own food for lunch,
because of all the great advertising. I bet that place would be ideal
for the program, and the guy doing the show would love the food and
rave about how great it is.

It's not just her, I only mentioned her because I'd just seen her

Buddy is on TLC, not the Food Network. And it isn't a challenge, it's
a cake show.

The source of this article was confused.

Went to a burger joint the other day. No gloves worn, throwing the fries in the
fryer barehanded. Handling ground beef, then buns, cash, condiments, wipe off
counters then handle food again, all without gloves or washing hands. I
mentioned this and they all looked at me like I was nuts. I turned around and
left my unpaided order on the counter as did two others, bet I'm banned from
there, like I care.
I called the health branch, they said they'd get around to it, makes you all
warm and fuzzy that their doing their job doesn't it?

Buddy was on an episode of cake challenge. I find him very annoying and

I'm also tired of hearing the show hosts saying "this bad boy"

Everyone is assuming dirty fingernails come from grubbing in
actual dirt. There are foods that get in there, too, and
look much nastier than they are until you can scrub them out.
I'm thinking avocado and chocolate. Both take scrubbing with a
nail brush, much more than a soapy rinse to get out, and I keep
my fingernails short!

Agree on all points. She said once, "salt is the reason you like
restaurant food so much". Well, perhaps, but my body can't take meal
after meal, day after day of that much salt. A one time shot is okay
because my body doesn't react that quickly. Salt was my biggest
complaint about my last vacation... all the salt hidden in every meal.
The food onboard ship was much less salty and they would have cut it
down or out completely if I'd remembered to tell them when I ordered.
That was the only draw back of not having assigned seating where you
tell the waiter once and it's done for the rest of the trip.

I'll save my getting grossed out for when I see them wipe their noses
with a bare hand and get back to work or cleaning the counter and then
handling food.

You think they didn't do that when you aren't looking? If they handle
your sandwich barehanded, do you realkly think they wash after wiping
their nose or using the toilet? At least if they wear gloves, you're
protected from that.

I hate watching "Hell's Kitchen". They are constantly wiping their
noses with their hands, and wiping their faces with a towel that they
then sling over their shoulder. That's just nasty.

That has been done for the past 64 years that I'm aware of and no one I know
ever got sick from it. The oil in the fryer is going to kill anything from
a hand. Probably faster than crap on a dirty glove. Your carrots were even
grown in dirt.

Yes but you don't deep fry the bun or condiments, and I don't really care if

Good points. I have had nails that did not look good due to other work
(staining wood, etc.), but were clean and sanitary. If I were going to be
showing my hands on TV in living HD, I think I would wear vinyl gloves
during any prep that may stain my nails. It is just the look that is kind
of yucky.

Well, they should be changing them too. And if they have them, you can
certainly ask them to change them. I've had customers who don't eat
pork, and they will ask us to change gloves if we just handled pork.
I've had one ask me to clean the slicer and slice their meat fresh to
avoid pork. That's fine. We have one lady who asks us to wear gloves
even though we are handling a spoon. We are not required to wear
gloves when using a spoon, but it is good customer service, so we
honor the request.

Sometimes, if I do need to scratch my nose or rub my eye, I will do it
with a glove on, then toss the glove. It's much faster than going to
the back to wash my hands.

That's HORRIBLE! At the very least, "they" should have scrambled the Health
Department SWAT Team immediately, to summarily execute the entire staff and
burn that goddamn filthy shit-hole to the ground!

It's kind of funny: In some California metropolitan areas, Chinese
restaurants having a less-than-perfect Health Code score are actually
*sought out* because people expect the food to taste better there. Same
thing with many barbecue places.

You want the salt and oil from those fries in your drink? She moved on
to scooping ice and using her hand. She was also handling money and
going back to the food. And if she doesn't wash her hands between

No, I've been watching her since she was on Door Knock Dinners,
even if I didn't make a lot of her recipes I still liked her and enjoyed
her shows. But about the time she got those Party shows I stopped

the continual Y'alls and the moaning and groaning and finger licking

consider the 'lighthouse' of Southern Cooking. However, there are many
genres and stratas to Southern Cooking, and hers definitely does fit
into one of those stratas --- or rather doesn't fit because "over sized"
is always required, eh (y'all get my drift?)? Of course, I'm far from
