Someone asked about the availability of caramel color. I found a recipe to
make your own. This is intended as a substitute for Kitchen Bouquet (if you
want the color, but not the vegetable flavor), but by the description,
I imagine it could be used to color bread as well.
Boil some water. In a small saucepan or skillet, heat 1/4 cup of sugar,
stirring until it melts and turns dark. Continue until it no longer smells
sweet.
Slowly (it may spatter at first, add 1/4 cup boiling water. Cook briefly until
it thickens slightly. Cool and store in the refrigerator.
