Nancy,
I assume you mean an orphaned foal when you are talking about a "bucket
baby". Dr. Julie Robinson was very helpful when a dear friend had an
orphaned foal this year with the death of the mare. It is a difficult
thing to do. The nutrition needs are very special and over feeding or
feeding rich food causes development problem that can be serious and
permanent. The socialization of an orphaned foal is another major
problem also. Don't go attemping this thinking you are saving money.
Save your money and buy a horse that you don't have to go through this
hassle. It is not an easy road to go.

Nancy,
several of our 4-H'ers have gotten bucket babies form a local woman who
sends her mare out as nurse mares. I know of none that have had problems
with them later. All have frown up to be useful animals. HOWEVER, this
is a big however, they were all socialized in a herd. That way they were
tought herd manners as well as people manners and they knew they were
horses.

Bucket babies need more work to get them socialized with other horses,
but other than that, should need no special treatment and shouldn't
have any more problems than any other horse. If at all possible, find
a horse that will tolerate the baby as a buddy - sometimes older mares
or yearling fillies work out - even if you have to board someone else's
horse for a while. Another weanling would be okay. If that isn't
possible, be sure the baby is in as close contact with your other
horses as possible. Usually a bucket baby is the result of a mare
dying or rejecting her baby - how is it that you're _planning_ to get
one next year???

What is a Bucket Baby?

An orphaned foal, or one rejected by the dam, prior to weaning. End
result is feeding by the human (often using a bucket) if a
substitute horse mom isn't located and willing to accept the
suckling foal.

A foal or calf or whatever that has not got a mother to nurse for whatever
reason and it fed milk or milk replacer with a bucket instead of a bottle.

It is a common practice in TB country to orphan nurse mare colts
so that the million dollar babies get nurse mommies and the
colts...rarely purebred anything.... sell for 50 to 150 dollars at a day
or so old.....they are not hard to raise on buckets and friends of mine
in Lexington make extra money by raising and selling the colts....
