Saw a hummer this evening!
Earliest I've seen one here, yet.

I thought they sent all those gas guzzlers to China. :-)

For the past few years, we've had them at our kitchen window because
just outside that window is a stand of milkweed. The butterflies and
hummers love milkweed and we love watching them hover around it.

But for some reason last year we didn't get any hummers to our milkweed.
I even put a feeder out. I did see a hummer buzz the feeder once but
didn't feed at it (it was fresh commercial nectar).

This year I decided to get a big hanging plant with lots of red (Verbena
in this case) to try and attract them. I remember that Emily said they
follow the azalea bloom and ours have been blooming so I put the hanging
plant out on Friday. I was rewarded Sunday night with a small female
buzzing around it. :)

I also have butterfly bush there and now a pile of annuals to encourage
even more to visit. I plan to add some cardinal climber and other vines
and butterfly weed.

I bought a fuschia one time because we were strolling through the
garden store (Rogers, in Corona Del Mar) and I was watching a
hummingbird feed at the plant. Worked like a charm, and I sometimes
had them visit while I was sitting just 6 feet away. They could sneak
in and out quicker than the cats could respond.

I see hummingbirds active around the apple tree here, which is pretty
much done blooming in this not-so-snowy zone. I've seen them around
the clematis, too.

Hummingbirds and butterflies sometimes like the same flowers, so you
may get a bonus.

Well, Ms Hummingbird has been persistent at the feeder, if only
briefly each time. But I have observed her sitting and sipping, not
just hovering and grabbing quick gulp.
The hum of their flight is certainly distinctive!
Glad they're here.

As an aside, but on the flowering theme, I have had some fruit trees
finally blossom that have never done so before!!! It will be
interesting to see if that results in actual fruit. I'm talking
apple, crabapple, plum, peach, and pear. Various of the trees have
flowetred/fruited before, but not all, by a long shot. Have not
gotten pears or plums before. I hope this will be a "fruitful
year"!!!!

Many fruit trees require cross-pollination from another variety.
Hopefully that will happen for you. :)

I am absolutely sure there's 2 females. Have yet to see a male.

Not seen any hummers but I have had reports of bear around my place--
neighbors saw an adult last week and Carl spotted a cub down the
road.
