We almost pulled the trigger on a horse trailer with living quarters,
and a new truck. i chickened out. the price was astonishing and
meant i was having a nervous breakdown about the money <g>. i have a
very nice chevy p/up and a great collins arndt two horse trailer
bumper pull.
so today, i stopped by stones campingworld to get information on an
awning for my little horse trailer...they have pop ups, as well as
other bigger more expensive things. A friend now works there. My
volvo can pull one of these pop ups...which gives up more room than
horse trailer with LQ and while it would mean two vehicles go to
these
things...not as bad as commuting every day....
anyone have one? good/bad/ugly?

Depending on the Chevy pick up, why not buy a slide in camper... like
a Lance and you could keep your truck and trailer and have LQ when you
want.
When you want the pick up to be a truck simply let down the jacks and
drive out from under the Lance...

Here are some used ones...
or
Hunter
The Lance's are nice. We have some good friends with one and they
stay as long as five days when they go racing (he does MG racing; she
takes pictures :-) ).
The downside is that they come with a significant price tag and hold
their value VERY well. I looked at some used ones and concluded that
I'd be better off to get a new one and a warranty; the price
difference was that small! ;-)
Jayco alsm make a line. If you Google either one you'll find other
manufacturers, too.

I thought the used ones I noted were pretty reasonably priced didn't
you?
Hunter
The RVTrader link timed out so I'm not sure what they had. I looked
at a few on the other one. Some were reasonably priced, but I'm not
sure that the initial price was. The ones I looked at were holding
80-90% of value after three or four years which is pretty good in the
RV industry (or so I'm told). I did see a number of units that were
at the lower end of the spectrum (smaller, fewer features, etc.). So
while the dollars could range accross a wide spectrum the percentages
were kind of narrow and favorable to the seller.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!! :-)
Hunter-
we'll have to look. I have a friend who has one, and had a not good
experience (long story). one of my concerns is that withhow it goes
down in the back, it looks like the hitch would have to extend
farther? It needs to be alble to sleep four with two big dogs <g>. i
know, i expect a lot!

I'm not Hunter, but you're right. My friends pull a good sized race
trailer behind the truck and it has an extension "stinger" to hook up
the trailer.
My friend commented the other day that he doens'nt like the arangement
because it puts the tongue weight of the trailer on a fairly long
moment arm that has a tendency to lighten the load on the front wheels
(while increasing the load in the back). He's considering some "air
springs" that will compensate for the load. I'm not sure that's going
to work.
We ended up rejecting this approach for a number of reasons. First,
I REALLY like the gooseneck trailer concept. They are MUCH easier to
manuever than a bumperpull. Second, center of gravity of the truck is
raised significantly by the slide in. Third, the "sail area" of the
truck is significantly incrreased by the slide in (a detriment in high
winds). Fourth, (from my friend's experience) you must be quite
careful in where you set up and ENSURE that you don't put a leg of the
slide in into a "soft" spot or you can have one Hell of a wreck.
My friends are satisfied with their set up for now, but recognize the
limitations of the program.
Bill--
you're bringing a lot of good points. At this time (and for the
forseeable future....) we go to 2-4 "away" breed shows a year, where
we could make use of a LQ. A new truck to pull a larger trailer with
LQ seems like a lot of money to spend for a few times a year <g>. I'm
very satisfied with my current truck/trailer arrangement (bumper
pull....but i still like it!).
My son and hubby also do a few dirt bike races. we can easily put the
bikes in the bed of the truck. I'm learning more and more towards a
pop up. Which everyone who knows me is astonished at....but, the new
one's are actually pretty decent.
in an ideal world, a chevy 3500 would get 30 mpg, and i had a hundred
grand to spend on that truck and a two or three horse with 8' wide lq
that can sleep us four. That's not happening any time
soon.....so.....we explore the options.

I'm pretty sure you need an 8' bed for most of them anyway.
They make them for 1/2 ton trucks too.
In the commercials they are usually pulling a bumper pull trailer so I
know they can.
As for the big dogs... if the dinette converts to a bed, they could
sleep on it.
You could always look at Class B & C motorhomes that'll pull a trailer
but with the Lance you wouldn't have to have an extra vehicle to
insure & maintain.

Betsey,
I did some googling and there's a hitch extension that Lance
recommends....
Personally, you couldn't give me a pop-up... I want hard sides between
me and the outside world.
Hunter
Watch your GVWR - those slide ins aren't light.
Emily

Some are lighter than others. They even make them for F-150s so they
must be light.
My F-250 has the "camper package" so its set up for one.
You're right though, weight is important.
Hunter
but the one's that are made for 150's (and 1500's...which is mine)
don't have "indoor plumbing" and really don't look like it would do
it. the other challenge is that as you extend the hitch for hte
bumper pull, you essentially need to lessen the tongue weight as
well. we'll go look though!
betsey

Google it... lots of people say they use a hitch extender and its no
big deal.
What kind of truck do you have?
Hunter
chevy 1500 silverado...extended cab. As i said, we'll go look at it
all, just need to get through a busy weekend! (painting beach house
today and sunday, wedding tomorrow) (no, the beach house isn't ours,
it's my sister's..just closed on it yesterday. but i'll get a key,
which makes it mine!)
betsey

>chevy 1500 silverado...extended cab.
Oh.... when you mentioned the 3500 I was hoping you had a 1 ton.
No way, I don't think, can you use the Lance and tow the horse
trailer... forget that.
Your combined weight rating won't allow it.
Hunter
Hunter..
that was figured out a long time ago <g>. we'll go shopping and
figure something out. my reasons for not buying a horse trailer with
LQ is that we would need to upgrade to a 3500. not financially smart
right now....
as i said, i was really looking for opinions on pop up/no pop up. A
friend on RMMGA suggested lightweight fiberglass trailers, worth
taking a look.
if i win the lottery...watch out!

That was my next suggestion... Casitas ....
>if i win the lottery...watch out!
Then you get an Airstream <g>
Kidding, a nice aluminum gooseneck with LQ, satellite dish, slide
outs....
Hunter
we think alike <g>
