I had a great lesson again yesterday. Tommy and I reaffirmed our goals
in the lessons. They are to keep Reggie fit to continue to maintain and
improve his balance, suppleness and muscling. That's different from
training to show/compete, but not.
Yesterday we worked on connection and encouraging him to work from his
hind, over his back and into my hand in the walk, trot, and canter. I
have a habit of losing the connection through my hands. Either by not
being steady enough or by being so light it's nonexistent. Reggie works
better in a light hand and that sublety can be a challenge for me.
Anyway, I really focused on it yesterday and was able to stay quite
steady, allowing him to reach for it and finding it there.
At the canter I found that closing my fingers on alternating hands
encouraged him to stay with the connection without pulling back or
having him lean on me.
Our transitions were soft, he was working through his back and it was fun.
In between, Tommy had us free walk to allow him to stretch his back so
he wouldn't get all sore and tight.
And the weather was beautiful during that window of time. Sunny, light
breeze, upper 60's. Nice.
