We see these ponies nearly every summer (I have pics in my webshots
account - emjaycem) when we go to OBX. The ponies are really north of
Corolla, blocked from traveling south by fences and cattle guards. They
used to roam the whole OBX but were getting killed by cars due to the
massive influx of tourists during the summer. So now they are confined
to the section that is 4WD only access. Corolla is the most
northernmost town accessible by the paved road. Once it ends, if you
have 4wd, you can access the next 15 mile length of the OBX and the town
of Carova by driving on the beach. The beach is supposed to have a
strict 20mph limit but over the past few years, we've noticed that
people have been speeding much more blatantly, 40,50, and even 60mph.
It is dangerous for people too since driving is allowed both at the
dune's edge, far from the surf, and along the surf itself. People can
park on the beach between those two lanes so you have kids running
around mixing with the traffic. At the northern end, there is another
fence which marks the border of NC & VA. The banks actually continue
north into VA but it is a wildlife refuge, no vehicles allowed.

I have yet to see the law about proximity to the horses enforced. They
have lost much of their fear of people and at night, often find refuge
from the bugs by huddling in the car ports of beach houses.

Thanks for posting the article, will be sending it to my SIL/BIL who own
the house in the OBX.

Interesting information, Mary. Thank you.

I wonder if they couldn't merely put out shelters, water, and food
in such a way as to concentrate the herd away from harm.
