Could Reagan ride?

I was reading the latest issue of Vanity Fair and they published some of
Reagan's diaries. Anyway, there were pictures of him and one was on a
horse. He was in English tack. Was he a good rider?

The picture is goofy because he is just standing, resting and the horse is
turning its head but the snaffle is pulled so far through the mouth that the
joint is outside the mouth.

I'm not saying that is related to being able to ride but I just think its a
goofy picture.

He owned horses most of his life and liked to ride in his spare time. He
was also in a bunch of cowboy movies and the TV series "Death Valley Days."
If he ever fell off or got hurt, I'm not aware of it.

here's a group of photos from his ranch---all looked like nice horses,
and that he and Nancy were competent riders...

So Sharon, if your answer is "did he compete, did he study dressage,
etc", the answer to that is likely no. did he pleasure/trail ride and
love his animals? the photos give an obvious "yes"

Notice the english tack.

I wouldn't bet on that.

That's not possible. He was a Republican. All Republicans are evil animal
abusers who take pleasure only im oppressing the poor and love only money.

It would be amazing if he never did considering how much he rode.

Well, in 30 years I've fallen off and had minor injuries. I never went to
the ER or got into the papers. Most of Reagan's career took place before
the current mania for every tiny detail of every celebrity's life.

Sharon, Ronald Reagan Jr. has a radio talk show. I'll bet, if you called
and asked him about his father's riding, you would go to the top of the
queue and he would be happy to talk about it.

You don't have to have access to the show. Just find the call-in number
and what time it's on the air.

I know Michael Reagan has a radio talk show. I wasn't aware Ron had one
... I thought it was a commentator on CNN or some such

You're right. Here's the web site: http://www.reagan.com/

I catch it occasionally, flipping through the talk stations.

Ronald Reagan Jr. also has a radio show:

Yes, and he was a rather fine rider, he did a whole lot of western movies in
addition to Hell Cats of the Navy. :) I believe, I remember him receiving a
gift of a Lipizzaner while in office, which he fell off of for some reason.
I might be dreaming, too lazy to look it up for you. Go see if you can find
the story! :)

Most radio stations have web casts now. Though I wouldn't expect you to be

He owned a ranch, always had horses, and rode regularly, both in
English and Western tack. He owned and regularly rode at least one
well-bred purebred Arabian.

Here is Reagan riding with Liz (Queen of England):

Any time the President is out in public, there's a lot of action.
Something probably startled the horse and it snapped its head around.

I pre-ordered the Reagan Diaries last year when Imus interviewed Douglas
Brinkley . Like him or not, it's fascinating reading about the
day-to-day doings of the office.

My impression is that not only was he a rider, he was a horseman.

Here is a list I found of some photos and some press releases about Reagan
and his lifetime love with horses.
Enjoy! :)

Thrown from his horse.  In July, 1989, President Reagan had just completed
his second term in the White House. During a visit to a ranch near Cananea,
Sonora, Mexico, which was partially owned by long-time supporter William
Wilson, the 79 year old Reagan went for a horse ride.  He was thrown from
his horse and suffered bruises, abrasions and struck his head.  A helicopter
evacuated him to Fort Huachuca in Arizona where he received medical
treatment.  The ranking officer at the post said that Reagan asked him to
"make sure people know that I was thrown from the horse.  I did not fall."

In Hollywood, the President starred in numerous movies involving horses:
"Swing Your Lady," (1938) a horse drama with Mary Maguire;

Photographs show President Reagan, too polite to correct him in front of
photographers, staring at Gorbachev's hat with a bemused look.

To my recollection the answer is "yes."

In the mid-30s, so I'm told, a number of actors (including Reagan,
Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda, and some others who would later make it
Big) were part of a CA National Guard Cavalry unit that was organized
in the LA area. I'm not sure if they were ever "on the books" with
the organization or if they just took instruction from sergeants on
Army horses. Many got enough experience to later star in "oaters".

I've often heard that Regan's favorite riding togs were English
breeches and boots, a "civilian" shirt, a leather jacket, and a narrow
brim hat. There are many photos around of him in this kind of outfit.
When he decided to enter politics his "handlers" required him to wear
more traditional "Western" garb (so as not to mess up the public
"perception" of him as a "cowboy").

Single photos seldom tell much of a story.

Maybe photo selection was not an accident. Maybe it was. Or maybe
the photo editor is a moron.
