So how does one figure out what size stirrups one should have?
If your boot is 4" at its widest, what size stirrups should one
obtain?
How much "wiggle" room should one have?
I don't think I've ever really thought about that before.

I recall from somewhere that you should be able to get a pencil in on each
side. Seems pretty narrow to me. I'll take a tape measure into the barn
tomorrow (equine dentist appointment for two, Corinne?) and measure my MDC
Ultimates. Too ancient brain cells and filing system refuse to cough up what
size they are ...

Actually that sounds about right. For safety reasons I wouldn't want
them any narrow than that, however.

Cheers,

And my story is that I have a simply *marvelous* memory - all the info
is there. It's just accessing the hard drive is the problem! ;-))
Yeah.
I have no idea what size my stirrups are.
It's been way too long since I even considered the situation. Nor do
I ever remember what the criteria are for sizing or ever having heard
them!
The pencil concept sounds reasonable, I suppose.
And at 4", that means 4 1/2" would give 1/4" on either side, ie, a
pencil.

My daughter & I (size 8 & 9 narrow), use 4-3/4 irons. I have about 1/2" of
wiggle room in my bulky ariat paddock boots, more if I wear skinny paddock
boots. I like wiggle room as I feel like my foot will give more freely if I
fall.

FWIW, I am a size 8 medium and ride in 4 3/4 irons. I feel like I have
sufficient mobility at that size.

For Corinne's foot, normally I would say buy 4 3/4 to be totally safe, also.
That's my daughter's foot size and I upped her from the 4 1/2 to the 4 3/4.
But I'll abide by whatever Corinne and her trainer think.

Wikipedia content is supposed to be based strictly on reliable
published sources, given as inline references. However, lots of
Wikipedia articles are full of what amounts to mere personal
opinion.

My rule of thumb for stirrup size is that the stirrup should be
large enough (wide and tall enough) that I can get my foot in
and out without difficulty. I don't care how much larger it is.

Some people believe a close fitting stirrup increases your risk
of getting dragged in a fall; others believe a loose fitting
stirrup increases your risk. I have found no data supporting
either belief.

OK, Corinne, my MDC Ultimates are 4-3/4" and I wear a US 8.5 boot. I'm very
comfortable that the fit is not too tight, not too loose.

Anecdotal data and we all know what that's worth! :-)

That pdf file from MDC was quite good, actually, although there was
enough "personal taste" left in! But it gave some very good
guidelines.
Thanks for the links.

>Anecdotal data and we all know what that's worth! :-)

Well.
I shall just have to measure the inside width of my current stirrups,
re-measure my boots (just 'cause) and ask Jane to measure the inside
of her H-S ones.
Then I can decide from there.

Thanks, guys!

That last about the links was to Dawn, BTW. Unclear toad that I am.

I'm sure the dentist in you will be sorry to hear that the ponies are still
all fine from last year's floatings.

Spot's teeth are so flat that it might be hard for him to wear them unevenly
anymore :-)

Hoover was wired even before the dentist arrived ... OMG. He wasn't evil and
wasn't dangerous but his few brain cells were nowhere to be found. Having a
branch fall on the metal barn roof and scare all the horses into next week
did not help that any. Even the new lap dog Great Dane found the branch to
be just too much.

Emily - the creeks and pond at the barn are flooding. Again.

Note that the "2 pencils" rule gives about 0.5 inch of ease. The "2
index fingers" rule gives about 3X as much ease: 1.5 inch. I think
we would all agree the difference is significant.

For riding with my heavyduty extra warm pac boots, I have 5.5 inch
stirrups made for the polo market. They are overbuilt in every way.
I feel so safe in them.

The dentist in me is qute pleased that they're all fine!
Don't forget, I spent my career in the military and had no care about
collecting fees. <G>

Not a bad thing at all.

Oy.
Excitement you don't need, not of that sort!
