Description: Woodturning and turned objects.

Midi-Chuck
I've got a Nova midi-chuck and want to turn a few things from dowels but I have a conundrum. Thinner dowels fit and the thicker do not. I can fit thinner directly into the chuck and turn just fine. The larger diameter is too big for the chuck and too small for my jaws. I would prefer not to have to buy another set of jaws right now.... more »

lathe check
Looking at a older lathe, Walker-Turner about 1950s, any input would be helpful.

Cutting out rounds
Had to cut some rounds for turning out of maple today. My 9" bandsaw would not do the job. I had to use a bigger saw at a seniors centre. Is there anyone cutting out rounds with something besides a bandsaw. I certainly don't want to buy bigger bandsaw. Thanks for any replies...

fa: anyone need link belts? pullies?
normally I don't post FA stuff here, but this particular auction may go way too cheap and a number of folks on this NG can get a great deal - there are three 40" (aprox) link belts and two huge pulleys - quite a few of you seem to use the 1/2 inch link belts - if that is all you want (and you win), you... more »

Palm wood for turning
I just got some palm tree logs from a neighbor that was cutting it down. I was thinking of using to to turn some bowls if it works OK. I haven't tried it yet, but was wondering if anyone had any experience with it and what I should do. Any words of wisdom will be appreciated. I was thinking of trying to turn some wet and let the... more »

Experience needed with finishes in tropical climates
Ernie Newman (Australia) and I are going to Samoa in February to set up a production turning capability at a school there to help in the recovery from the recent earthquake/tsunami. One of the issues we are facing is the finish that will work best in that environment. Equatorial, sea level, local wood.... more »

Piano stool
Does anyone here know where I can get some plans or drawing for a piano stool with a seat that uses a screw mechanism for raising and lowering the seat. I have found the hardware and now need a good design. If I can't find it I guess that I will have to design it myself. I would rather save the time and not re invent the wheel, it's a Christmas present. Thanks, Mark... more »

salvage cracks and dings
In my efforts at turnng bowls and somewhat deeper vessels, I find an occasional crack for one reason or another. I also create some surface defects from sometimes less-handy manipulation of my cutting tools. If the defects are not fatal to the piece and I think I want to salvage the piece, I have decided that a decorative accent may be the ticket. I have obtained some... more »

Jamieson hollowing system
I am building a Jamieson hollowing system. It occured to me that I could add a thin (1/8") thin wall plastic tube taped to the boreing bar and also a LED. I would hook the tubeing up to my air compressor to blow chips out of the hollow form and the LED would help me achieve a paper thin wall on the form. That would be better than the laser.... more »
