Grumpy,
what are you reading??? Spring water is that high-brow stuff that costs
$$$. If you're looking at a "recipe" that calls for water, just use your tap
water. Yeast is like teenagers, they like lots of junk food. Tap water with
all its minerals in it is ideal for yeast. Go ahead and save your $$$

Thanks Joanne,

I was beginning to wonder if anyone saw this posting. I had read some
earlier posts where guys had said "...and I even used spring water" so
figured it needed the question asked.

Tap water it is.

Probably the only bad thing for wine in tap water is chlorine. I don't
worry about it but you could agitate it to drive off the chorine if you
wanted but Joanne is right. The minerals in regular water should be good
for yeast.

Now if you live around Midland Texas ignore the above and buy the best
spring water you can get. ;o) You cannot even drink coffee made with that
water!

Am I right Joanne? You have been through that area haven't you.

Chlorinated tap water will alter the taste of any wine.
I have,yet, never seen the chemical breakdown affixed on a bottle of spring
water. Industrial fall out carry by rain will affect the taste of grapes.
The revised Radionuclides rules are affecting ground and spring water
(United States Environmental Protection Agency) Using so call spring water
may taste good but is it safe???

I havn't been through that area of Texas, but I do know that Texas has
gone to Federal Court to validate an extortionist treaty called the Pecos
Water Treaty by which New Mexico is _forced_ to give water to Texas
regardless of the amount of precipitation Mother Nature decides to fall
here. Since Texas water is originally from New Mexico, I can't imagine how
they could screw up water.
Now that I have yanked Richard Dulany's chain (just kidding!!!).......
As far as the chlorine is concerned, that gasses off after 24 hours, so you
can essentially de-gas water that is too high in chlorine As for mineral
content, maybe a simple filter would suffice. Water filtration systems are
available at local hardware stores such as Home Depot, Lowe's, etc (here in
the US).

Go through the area and try the water. It will justify why they would steal
water from anyone.

As far as the water used changing the taste of the wine, of course it does.
So does the nutrient you add. Hopefully for the better. Besides, wine does
not have to taste the same. If you object to it then of course don't use
it. I suspect most could never tell the difference. And as has been stated
by several. The chorine is gone in 24 hrs. If the water give the wine a
bad taste (as midland water would) it is something else in the water (like
gypsum).
