Does anyone here knit, crochet, etc when they are feeling down in the dumps
and if so do you find it helps to lift your spirits?

Yes to both. Knitting keeps me sane more times than some people would
imagine.

I can admit that I knit and crochet when I'm feeling down becaue it
helps me forget how I am feeling. Also seeing something accomplished
really helps.

I crochet and sew and do some other crafts also and they all help me
keep my sanity, and help get me out of bed on several days. I'm
disable and no longer get to drive and live in a very small town with
no public transparation, so I sit home a lot and do my crafts..

Knitting when I am depressed helps a lot or when I am angry. I find if
I knit, I count stitches and it keeps me from thinking too much. It
certainly helped me through many, many a bad year. I don't know if it
lifted my spirits but it enabled me to get through the bad times.
I often wonder about people who say knitting is relaxing. I don't find
it relaxing but I am incapable of sitting and doing nothing.

Hi Red Rose,

Oh yes, I find knitting and crocheting the best therapy in the world. Case in
point, when my Mom was in the hospital for 110 days my knitting mittens saved
my sanity.

I knit and crochet and they both help me keep my sanity! I have had some
very horrible things to deal with, keeping busy and having my friends here have
been very beneficial for me. I also enjoy being able to make things for other
people, especially things for Project Linus. Helps keep my mind off my woes and
gives me something positive to think about.

My daughter doesn't usually ask me to make anything for her little girls
preferring to get stuff from Gap and Next ,but she recently asked me to
crochet 2 pink ponchos. It made for a great weekend going off to the
woolshop to buy the wool and settling down in front of the telly watching
the Olympic while crocheting away. So yes I guess it does lift my spirit and
makes me happy to create something .

When it's going well, I find crocheting relaxing, but sometimes it makes
me very angry.

Yes to both...BTDT and still doing it! But watch out if a project doesn't
go as it should; I get ticked off! But starting something else, even some
squares for no good reason, will get past that. It's very calming and
concentrating on stitches or patterns can really take your mind off other
things....just don't block out the whole world all the time....it's still
there when you wake up!

I don't crochet when I'm depressed, but I get depressed if I don't
crochet. So it's a preventative measure rather than a treatment for
me.

I crochet and do cross stitch. I have dabbled into many types of crafting
over the years. I guess that I just love to be creative. I am the kind of
person that does not like to sit and do nothing. I bring my projects with
me everywhere I go. You just never know, right? I find it helps to pass
the time when you are waiting somewhere, or while watching DH's programs.
Sometimes, when I am at the kids activities and do not have anyone to talk
to, it helps me feel better. (I am a little shy) And actually, you can make
friends that way because people will come over and ask you what you are
doing, etc.

My husband has been battling lung cancer for over a year, without crochet to
do there would have been a lot of waiting rooms with worn out carpeting.
Crochet keeps me calm and cool and not pacing the floors.

Hi Rose

I knit or crochet when I'm down or worried about something, it helps me to
have something to concentrate on other than whatever is worrying me! So
you're definitely not alone in this

Oh my yes!!! I was out all of today and into the evening again with the
never-ending fruitless job search. Tonight I am about ready to knit a tarp
for the car. With size 1 needles. :)

Hi Erin,

Prayers going to you and your husband. Yes, that is exactly how I felt sitting
in the waiting room and it sure helped keep me sane.

Hugs,

Red Rose - the answer is absolutely !! I think almost everyone on the group
does too. I know if I am feeling unwell or just plain "down" I go for the
knitting and especially for a pattern that needs concentration - then you
cannot think how ill you feel !!! God Bless Gwen

I crochet all the time, anyway, so doesn't make much difference. Your mind
doesn't always have to be on your project unless you have to count stitches
or rows. And I have found, through a long lifetime, that what works for one
doesn't always work for another. God Bless and have a GREAT day!!

Oh, yes-yes-yes! As others have said, it helps keep your sanity. I
*was* going to say that it probably was best to do something that is
easy and you can do well at these times, not a Pattern-from-Hell, but on
further reflection, I take that back. Sometimes working on a PFH can
kick your adrenaline into high gear and pull you right up.

Yes,it's very helpful to boost your skills especially when bored or wanting to show your unique talent. Cross stitching and sewing beanbags is very handy and useful in making beanbag characters or cross stitching gardens and cute things. Cross stitches can be in single stitches or in-a-row stitches. This helps with sewing clothes,as a beginner
