Can someone explain to me the gathering technique that involves a zig zag
stitch and dental floss? Is this technique good when gathering large
amounts? Thanks for the help.

This technique is an alternate method for those that do not have a gathering
foot for their sewing machine. You can also use thread similar to fishing line
(or even fishing line) instead of floss.

You zigzag over the floss being sure not to sew into it. When you have
finsihed the length of the garment, pull the floss, thereby gathering the
garment. Bunch the gathers by hand to evenly space. Then sew over the gathers
to seal in.

this technique is useful for gathering heavy fabrics, such as canvas
or other drapery type materials. this will work very well for large
scale projects, such as drapes or bedskirts, but won't allow enough
precision adjusting the gathers for something smaller, such as
pillow ruffles.

it isn't a case of how *much* you have to gather, as how big it is.

--
if you are unfamiliar with the technique, it is frequently found in the
gathering section of your sewing machine manual. lay dental floss or
small cord on your gathering line (above the stitch line), and cover
the
cord with a large zig-zag stitch. be sure not to catch the cord in
any of the stitches!

some machines even offer special feet that you can use for this..
they are usually intended for smocking work.

I don't know specifically about pillow ruffles (never having ruffled a pillow)
but I find this method works for *anything* large or small I have tried to do
except for very lightweight fabrics, where the zigzag stitch tends to distort
the fabric. I generally use coat-and-button thread for the cord (don't have
any floss -- I'm a WaterPik person, myself).

The technique is best used on medium weight fabrics.

Create a casing over the dental floss with the zig zag stitch inside
the seam allowance. DO NOT PIERCE THE DENTAL FLOSS. Secure one end
of the floss and pull the floss to create the gathers.

Ready, set, go. Great on dance costumes.

I'm not sure about that one but I do know a quick gathering technique. Put your
upper tension as tight as possible and then lengthen your stitch and your material
with gather. If the gather is too much then loosen you tension until you are
satisfied.

to gather fabric i pull bobin thread the length of the piece to be
gathered. I then zig zag aver this thread being carefull not to catch the
thread! By using this method verse dental floss allows you to gather with
out mishap! I've lost dental floss on more then one occasion! hope this
helps.

I have used dental floss many times to gather fabric. It works like a
charm! Just cut off a piece of floss a little longer than the area to be
gathered then zig zag over the floss using a narrow zig zag making sure
you do not catch the floss in the stitches. I always put a pin at the beginning of the
stitching and wrap the end of the floss around the pin several times to
secure it. Then pull the free end of the floss to gather. Once you have
the garment gathered and stitched in you can remove the floss.

I just always ran in a quick line of basting with the machine on the
longest stitch setting with the top tension a bit tight. Then, I just
secured the needle thread around a pin and pulled on the other end to gather.

...(I'm also a big fan of pin-easing, but some people think that
that's a four-letter word, so I'll not mention any more about that)
