My grandmother was the only girl out of nine kids and she was the youngest. According to the family story, her mother was very disappointed to have a girl so she let the boys name her. They named her Ima Pearl. I am only partially named after her, but I took the name as my online name. Pearl

A lot of interesting names mentioned so far..... My dad's name was Chester Clay, Mom's was Allien (no middle name!); Dh's dad was Vernon Dale, dh's mom was Patricia Iola; my maternal grandmother was Mamie Capitola; my first name is Cleo. I have always been asked if it was short for something :). I used to dislike the name, but now like it. My sisters are (there are 6 of them!): Dora Gale, Carol Ann, Betty Jean, Linda Sue, Margret Allien, and Ruth Ann; the two brothers are: Chester James and David Arthur. My DS's are: Karl Gregory, Patrick Allen and Curtis Dale. My dad was from a large family, but I won't list any more names .....don't want to cause you eye strain! lol.

This was cool! I tried it with all of us. Most of them were dead on! It wasn't all that accurate with my oldest son, but the rest were pretty close! Vickie in Columbus

And how about if parents stick a child with going by their *third* name?! My great-aunt Mabel was actually named Sarah Karen Mabel McNeil. I never could understand why they didn't either call her Sarah, or if they wanted to call her Mabel, why not name her Mabel Sarah Karen? Most forms don't even have a space for a second middle name, yet that's what everyone called her! -- Deb http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Flats/4237/ (my quilts) http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Flats/4237/ffthome.html Food For Thought Challenge Pix

I wish more people would understand about putting the name you want to call a child first! My brother (John Mark) went by his middle name when he was growing up and it caused him no end of problems when he was grown, so now he's John to everyone except family/childhood friends who still call him Mark. Since our father's name is also John, and they live in the same town it causes lots of mix-ups. My mom says if she'd known then what she knows now, she would have given him a different name!
I was the only one in my DH's family who supported my SIL when she named her daughter Nicole Mary. Everyone else said it would sound better to name her Mary Nicole, but how often do you say both names aloud like that?? She wanted her to be called Nicole, while Mary was a middle name to honor her grandmother, so the order seemed perfectly sensible to me! Of course it was no time until Nicole became Nicki. ;-) -- Deb http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Flats/4237/ (my quilts) http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Flats/4237/ffthome.html Food For Thought Challenge Pix

<gryn> When my grandmother was in the hospital, someone called their house, and I answered. They wanted to know if Leander was there.
I told them they had a wrong number.....
Turns out they were asking for my uncle Pete, who's name I never knew til then.
I had to laugh at this one....my DHs secretary some years ago was telling how when the fifth child was born in her family and was brought home from the hospital....the other four were waiting on the front steps to name the baby as they had been promised they could....they named the baby Danny Thomas...I asked her if her mother minded this and she said no...the kids first choice was Trigger!<G> Nancy a

This is so cool ! How did you pick "Kiyah"?
My father was raised by his aunt and first cousin, his first cousin being at least 30 years older than him. That cousin was named Kiah. I've never yeard that name any other time or place, but I still hear my father talk about Kiah and the old family ranch (which they sold to a family named "Knott," who put a berry farm on it).
Our family's Kiyah was actually nicknamed Kiah; his full name was Hezekiah. How did you pick Kiyah for your daughter? If you don't mind my asking ...

I'm not Reshae :-) but if Kiyah is pronounced the way I think it is pronounced :-) it sounds Kaija (pronounced as written, j = hard) which is a Finnish girls name popular in 1920's (?), I have a great aunt called Kaija from that decade. Helena (in Finland where winter came back and I've had frustrating fun with blocks in inches - I quilt in centimeters and counting fractions of millimeters is not exactly fun)

My husband chose the name Kiyah. We were scouring the name books and he said the name I want is not in here. He said I want the name KIGH Yah. We struggled for weeks on how to spell this name. Found out after Kiyah was born that it wasin the movie Willow. She was Willow's wife's name. The movie spelled it Kaiyah. Yes it is pronounced the same way Hezekiah. We have no idea the meaning or anything but we get many compliments on her name. I must say that hubby has great tastes in names Reshae

I'm working on a team that has a Jody. Not a girl Jody. A boy Jody. :) Actually, Jody left the team to take position with another company. He was replaced by.....
Jody. Another boy Jody. Confused the dickens out of one of our coworkers from Raleigh, NC (whose first name differs from his last name by the first letter only--I think he's originally from India or that area), and the new hire (also from India), who keeps calling me Jody, too.
I'm reading a book on the Trumans. I found out that Harry had a brother named Vivian. Never knew that was a boys name. I've also known a couple male Leslies and a Loren.

DH's dog "Reba" was named by his ex, after the country singer Reba McIntire. So she's Reba Cole. [Reba also happened to be my grandmother's name, but that's another story.] When we took in a starving stray last year (at the end of November), she was younger, skinnier, and had longer hair -- so the kids and I named her Shania (after Shania Twain). Since she loves to run and Shania means "I'm on my way", it was very appropriate. So the newest member of our family is Shania Cole.

It's been awhile, but wasn't Avery supposed to be her mom's maiden name or something? Well, actually, the writers could have made it just about anything they wanted, couldn't they? LOL!! I really don't know if Avery was the mother's first or last name. I guess I always thought first because Murphy is unusual and unisex, and I thought it ran in the family. But I wasn't watching the show at that point so can't say for sure. Good thing she didn't have 2 kids, the other could have been "Post-it"
I always thought of the "Berle" Milton, til I met my nephew Milton (he was already borned when I met my DH) and this guy is soooo cooool it almost makes me wish I was 25 years younger..... <sigh> Mickie
