Thanks - I shall make the passport holder and the tag for DD. Her
husband (airline pilot) is about to start a new job flying out of Milan,
so she is about to embark on a few months of chaos flying back and
forth, as they don't want to actually do the big move and sell their
house until they are sure the job is permanent. (They won't rent it out
- the last time they did that the tenants did a lot of damage and
scandalised the neighbours by having fights in the street and 'intimate
parties' in a large paddling pool in the back garden. They didn't leave
until threatened with court action, but fortunately forfeited their
large deposit which more or less paid for the repairs!)

We are looking forward to our holidays in the Italian lakes!

Has anyone any hints on sewing the clear plastic? I think I have some
deep in a drawer that is shower curtain fabric, or is it better to cut
up one of those envelope document folder thingys. How does the stitching
hold - is it liable to tear. All handy hints welcome!

Sewing on clear plastic - possible and a little tricky. Plan to do some
testing. Since you're not outfitting an entire marching band, just a little
passport holder ought to be easy enough. Depending on the temp and
humidity, it might want to stick instead of feed. The trick is to simply
put some tissue paper above and beneath the plastic and remove it when
you're through stitching. See which needle, tension and thread works for
you before embarking on the real holder. I've made raincoats and totes and
they're still around after decades. Polly

Humidity here was 3% last week. You all should have come on over
to sew plastic. <LOL>
When the kids were little I made drawstring bags with small plastic
windows on the front so they could see what was in each bag. I don't
remember the plastic being particularly fussy but with 2 small tikes
I didn't have time for anything to be fussy in those days!

I've had wonderful luck using the clear vinyl-by-the-yard at both JoAnn's &
Wal*Mart ...I like the heavier weights .. the thin ones are a bit tricky, I
think.

We went through a "phase" about six years ago where my daughter and I made
several of those wall organizers (the ones with the plastic pockets) ... we
went through about 6 yards of the vinyl and they're still kickin'! We still
use them all the time and they've held up admirably.
